This plot is steadily getting worse and worse and worse, holy shit.

Who really thought it was appropriate to have a bunch of young girls in a sport that demands them be pretty have a crush on a doctor? Really? Are they that fcuking tone deaf?

Yeah, reading that blew my mind.

I don't want to pile on, but the doctor plot also popped out at me as pretty bizarrely timed. I'm not sure if it would be any better if it's deliberate and they mean to do some kind of socially conscious exploration of this issue because the show doesn't sound like the ideal format for that.

*** Jonathan Van Ness to serve ice skating realness in Netflix's Spinning Out series :
https://ew.com/tv/2019/03/06/jonathan-van-ness-netflix-spinning-out/
On the upcoming show that will feature former Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, Maze Runner‘s Kaya Scodelario, and Arrow‘s Evan Roderick, Van Ness will play Bruce, “a former skater turned big-time choreographer from Michigan.” With Scodelario as Kat, a former single skater hoping to save her career by entering the paired skater field with “bad boy” Justin (Roderick) as her partner, Bruce “will create Kat and Justin’s main competitors’ program and have some fun confusing his clients along the way.”

[Junior] Silver medal leads to Netflix appearance for Oakville teen: https://www.insidehalton.com/commun...eads-to-netflix-appearance-for-oakville-teen/
In the weeks following nationals, Schizas got a call from Olympic silver medallist Dylan Moscovitch. A skating-themed series being filmed for Netflix was looking for skating doubles for some of the actors.
“It’s kind of the last thing I expected to have happen,” Schizas said.
The 16-year-old not only has the ability, but is also among the small percentage of skaters who jump clockwise, which was also needed to synchronize with the actress she would be doubling for. The series, titled Spinning Out, stars three-time American champion Johnny Weir and January Jones.
Schizas already filmed some of her parts at a rink in Caledon, but this weekend she’ll be filming some more scenes closer to home at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex.

Anyone else think this is based on Virtue/Moir? That red dress the actress is wearing looks like the short version of Tessa’s Moulin Rouge dress.

Not at all. Watched a trailer and it seems to be singles skater pairs up with male to become a pairs team. She has an overbearing mother and seems to be popping pills and the dress you mention looks like any generic Sharene skating dress. So I get more Cutting Edge reboot with an addiction thrown it to make it edgier, I guess.

Maybe not based on them but definitely took inspiration from them.
Because one of her dresses is red.

Ah, because skaters who take "devastating falls" go into pairs all the time. That's just the discipline for a skater scared of falling.
Yeah, that was a bit much. Not only does she have to jump like in singles but she gets to be lifted 5-6 ft in the air and carried around the ice. Not scary at all.

Urgh. This series looks awful, and takes itself far too seriously to even be fabulous camp.

I'm sorry the likes of Jennifer Comeaux's books weren't picked up. Her writing style is very filmic.

Especially when the "devastating fall" was a serious head impact. You know, the number one bad injury in pairs. :duh:

Also...to add to the tone-deaf teenage-girls-with-crush-on-doctor subplot, I actually feel like the main plot is super tone-deaf? Creepy pairs man making hideous jokes about porn to a female skater? HELLO? And don't get me started on the "you can get past your traumatic head injury by having a mean coach and mean rival to push you through it!" message given the number of concussion issues skating has had in the last couple of years. I'm sure Josh would love to know he could have got through it if Christy and Damon had been meaner to him. Maybe Jason or Max could have gone mean-girl on him and he would have come back! Ugh. :duh:

Gee sounds like the writers never heard or saw Tatiana Totaminina's fall or even Ashley Cain's last year!

And the doctor crush thing...nope, nope, nope! How'd they miss that?!

Nope. It's a ridiculous premise so I will continue to  at it.
How can it be a ridiculous premise when I literally came with receipts with a pic the star actress posted that has a photo of Tessa in her Moulin Rouge dress, with an arrow written by the actress saying inspo? C’mon lady. All this just because I suggested they used V/M as inspiration. And I was able to back it up lol.

That dress the female character is wearing is obviously inspired by Tessa. But it doesn't look like anything else is inspired by them, by looks of the trailer. It looks like the standard over the top cheesy drama.

Looks like they definitely sortof copied the dress but everyone seemed to love Tessa's final version of her dress so it doesn't mean at all they were trying to copy Tessa. I do think the actress looks quite a bit like Tessa but Tessa is very beautiful so when thinking about what the star should look like they could have chosen her partially because she looks like her....Can't go wrong there.

So...it doesn't look like Spinning Out had a huge fan-following on this board, but I have to admit, currently on episode 7 and still watching. It is nice to see any show that has skating. The handling of the mother-daughter dynamic is compelling and I find the acting to be solid even if the storylines are overly-dramatic (can't imagine all of this happening to one skating family!). With all that being said, just saw this morning that Netflix has cancelled the show. If anyone is invested and interested in a protest campaign twitter is trending #renewspinningout #savespinningout
