Arguably two of the greatest talents U.S. skating has ever produced, and subject to countless "if-onlys."

I also LOVE Olga Markova, Maria Butyrskaya, and Josee Choiunard -- all sometimes headcases who had tons of potential.

Harding did indeed have a triple axel in her practice repertoire at around that time. There is a profile on her done for the 1990 US Championships, where she is shown landing two gigantic ones at her home rink, too.

Too bad Tonya was sick that week in Salt Lake City. Otherwise, she could have challenged Trenary for the national title, and potentially won a world medal in Halifax that season, too.

I knew that Harding had done triple axels in practice as early as 1984 or so, but I did not know that she actually planned one as part of her Free Skate any earlier than when she actually landed one in competition. It's mind-boggling that she had it planned for two minutes into that program!

I know what you mean. When Tonya was fit and trained, her conditioning was out of this world. You only have to look at her level of confidence and preparation at Skate America in 1991, and how she was stuck in traffic prior to the ladies' free skate, barely made the warm-up, and aced the event.

I became an instant fan after watching their free dance at Skate America last season. Much the same as GBR's Fear & Gibson took my breath away with their disco - inspired free skate at NHK.
