I have become a Zhenya fan.
Hope she has a great worlds and looking forward to seeing her off CSOI.

It is amazing that after she moved to Canada, many North Americans stopped hating her and some seem to have become her fans. Amazing what a change of country can do (sarcasm). When she was training in Russia, with a successful Russian coach and winning, they hated her like there was nothing good about her.
Losing competitions has earned her a lot of N. American fans.

Other than an improved double axel I don’t see any improvement in her. She has lost the consistency and her programs are not good. I am hoping that next year she will find good programs and find her consistency again. I am sure that those newly acquired fans will give all credit to Orser if she wins, but they never credited Eteri when Zhenya was so consistent and winning.

Great post for a Zhenya cheer thread:rolleyes:

Too bad there isn’t an Eteri cheer thread where you can defend poor, pitiful picked on Eteri as much as you want.

I too have become a Zhenya fan since she moved to Canada, I’m a Jason fan and she’s now Jason’s training mate, and I admire the grit, courage and determination it took off both of them to leave long time coaches and to try something new.

And if that upsets folks who are more Eteri fans than Zhenya fans, well, cry me a river:summer:

I am not a fan of Eteri but I see no reason to hate her the way many fsuers do. I respect her success as a coach. Like every coach she has her weaknesses.

I don’t follow ladies much at all. I follow the ones I know from proximity to my favorite men. To this day, I could probably not identify any Eteri skater other than Alina and Sasha, and I’m not sure I could pick Sasha out of a line up.

This is a Zhenya cheer thread, and Zhenya made a choice to leave. So Zhenya fans would support that. I wouldn’t go into a Jason cheer thread complaining about how his new fans don’t appreciate Kori. I’m not sure that shows support for Jason. And the same for Zhenya.

If she had more fans now, then good for her. :cheer2:

I am the one who started this thread for her and I can express my opinions here.

If you dont even watch ladies, it seems the only reason You became her fan is that she moved to Canada. I have been her fan since her first senior season, for her consistency and maturity onand off the ice (particularly in interviews).

I was happy when she went to Orser, not because he is Canadian, but because of his success as a coach. This has not been a good season for her, which was a bit of a surprise to me, but she was dealing with injuries and changes. What I didn’t expect was Canadians jumping on her bandwagon. Didn’t you guys always hate her and every Russian skater?

I feel we have to wait at least one more season before saying she is doing well. Right now she is not, but it is understandable. She is mentally tough, so she will persist. If this does not work out, at least she tried. I still hope that the partnership with Orser will work but she absolutely needs to change the choreographer. Her programs have been terrible this season, with the exception of Tosca, which she recently switched to.

Her biggest challenge next season will be to make the world team for Russia.

I did not care for her skating her first yr senior. I found her PCS overblown for skating that was mundane. I did think she was a nice kid. She saw what was around her and found that there was a lot more to skating than jumps and started to really work on the 2nd mark. She was growing into that 2nd mark and I really started to enjoy her programs and I do not attribute any of that to Eteri. Things went south with Eteri and she knew she would not go back. Maybe she could have gone to Mishin if he would have taken her but she felt a complete change was necessary & she had friends in Brians club who she trusted and found out what it would be like training there and made arrangements. This was very brave of her to refuse to quit without trying to fix things. I totally admire that and the class with which she handled the change. If she had gone to the rink it would have been a fishwife fight with Eteri so she had the Federation handle it. So now I am a huge Zhenya fan and hopes she reaches her dreams. At least she knows she tried everything instead of holding a pity party.

My opinion is similar to Barbarafan. I did not like some of her earlier programs either the choreo or her execution. I find she is growing into her body and maturing as a skater.

I admire her courage to make the change. Coming to Canada had to have been hard. She really seems to enjoy it and it is great to see her playful side and fun instagrams. It kills me that she is surprised that we have so much of wild life. We are so used to seeing the squirrels racing all over, the rabbits in spring and the raccoons making their weekly foray on garbage day that it is nice to see them through different eyes.

Anyway, I hope she does well in the worlds and will cheer her as I did for other faves like Michelle, Irina and Carolina who incidentally, are not Canadian.

Loved her in Russia, love her in Canada. Not sure what about her drew me in as a fan, but I've been one since her late junior time. Who coaches an athlete is less significant to me than what the athlete brings on the ice, and how I feel about that.

Does it really matter why one decides to become a fan of Med. The more the merrier.

I usually have a reason for becoming a fan of any skater. For example, I became a fan of Midori Ito for her amazing jumps, and of Gordeeva Grinkov for their technical perfection (And Katia’s ebullient personality on the ice).

I became a fan of Medvedeva for her amazing consistency for two seasons, and sometime after her first senior season, her maturity in the interviews.

I think it is an interesting question- what made you a fan of skater A, or skater B?

It is an interesting question. Maybe you could start a thread on that very subject. It is a bit off topic for
Med's Cheer thread for me to talk about Skater A or Skater B.

Well, what if I was a fan of her every year except for the year she had the stupid 9/11 FP and skipping SP? Is that allowed? Because then I was a fan of her skating both in Russia and in Canada but I didn’t like her during what was arguably her most successful year because I didn’t like her programs.

I didn't particularly care for her before the move, and still don't particularly care for her.

And, I'm not a Zag fan either.

Who is "you guys"? I hope you aren't lumping all Canadians into the 'hate the Russians category'? If so, that's not fair, because it's simply not true.

For example, this Canadian was a Plush fan and a D/M and D/K fan. At present, I am a huge Tuk fan.

And please tell me: if you do believe Canadians hate all the Russian skaters, would they be the only group to do that? Might there be people from other countries who also hate all the Russian skaters?

The perception that Canadians only root for Canadian skaters and hate everyone else is unfounded and downright ridiculous.

For me it was her courage, her indomitable spirit for one so young, her perseverance to be the best she can be. I think her skating needs to mature but I do see an improvement in her skating skills. She is a vocal role model and not just for Russians. Her team mates like Jason and Conrad are in awe of her.

Coming to Canada may or may not work for her as moving coaches doesn’t always work out.

I love Russian people and am able to distinguish between the people, politicians (FSB)and oligarchs.
In the same way I hated Harper in my own country and I love Americans yet hate the Orange Turd and his mob.

I also take offense at the idea that all Canadians hate Russian skaters... I don't understand where people get that misconception from... i don't hate athletes because they are from a certain country. I like or dislike them because of their own personal abilities or personalities.

One exception: Russian hockey players... well... if they play for my NHL team they're ok, but on the National Team...grrrr, I"ll respect them but I"ll get my hate on.

As for Med: I didn't particularly like or dislike her before coming to Orser, although I really had trouble understanding why her PCS kept rising all the time and why she kept winning with ever increasing margins. Now that she's older, physically mature, and seems to have had issues, well, it's human nature to root for an underdog and she's become sort of an underdog now that there are people that hate her in her own country and there are those that want to see ever younger champions. It takes courage to make a change and (it matters little to me that she went to Orser, it would be the same wherever she went) she certainly has a lot to chew on now. I"m interested in seeing if she can make her doubters eat their words.

I wasn't a fan of hers in the past and like @liv didn't understand her huge scores. I guess I felt about her the way some feel about Zagitova. Med's jumps looked forced and the endless miming seemed like a cheap way to score interpretation points, but she stood out for her consistency and "artistry."

But after the Olympics, her determination to continue, rework her technique, and make such a drastic and personally costly coaching change captures my imagination. I can't help rooting for her. A lot of Olympic silver medalists would just walk away, but Med is making major sacrifices to attain her perhaps impossible dream of an OGM. It seemed like a step backward to drop her SP and get another hair-pulling dramatic SP from Misha, but much as I loved the style and complexity of her OCS SP, it was obviously too much, too soon for her, so I understood her choice. I really hope she'll stick out the two years (at least) with Brian and keep stretching herself choreographically so we can see the best Medvedeva she can be.

I was never a fan of Medvedeva's skating and I can't say I'm really a fan today. But I was frustrated that there were some significant weaknesses in her skating that the judges would ignore by giving her sky-high scores. The fact that a skater at the top of her sport (I know she lost the Olympic title but it was very close with her far from 100%) would acknowledge her weaknesses and try to address them when she had no real reason to do so (the judges didn't care) is honestly inspiring. I don't know if Orser is the right coach to help her do that, and it seems to me they tried to change too much too fast, but I admire her desire to improve and reinvent herself.

I do understand that if you were a big fan of her before, especially if the main selling point was consistency, that you'd be disappointed. What I don't understand is why you would insult people because they're rooting for her? An underdog is going to get more support, and of course the whole 'traitor to Russia' thing (I know it's a minority but still) is going to lead to sympathy from North Americans. And then there's the fact that Eteri's girls skate in a particular style that maybe doesn't appeal to most North American fans - I know it does nothing for me (and I desperately want Kostornaia to try different choreographers).

Not everything is due to bigotry. And as long as everyone is respectful, there's no wrong way to be a fan.

I remember posting on this board a couple of years ago that I thought perhaps I could be a fan of Evgenia if she ever stopped skating to national disasters and got some really good programs. I got to test that theory in the Olympic year when she got her Anna Karenina program, which I liked a lot. And sure enough, that's when I started to become a fan. Not as big a fan as of Satoko and Kaetlyn and some of the others, but a fan nonetheless.

The people who called her "traitor" were very much a minority, as you said. Just the same as few ass-hats called Zagitova all sorts of ethnic slurs (she is Tatar, and culturally a Muslim), and wished her all sorts of injuries.

But! "moving to Canada" was not what the majority of Medvedeva's ex-fans objected to. There were several other issues in Med's behavior and conduct they strongly disliked and felt she was manipulating their feelings all this time. Some did not like the manner in which she left her coach. Some did not like her position in public, to "place herself ahead of Zagitova and diminish Zagitova's win". Some did not like her rabid fans who were aggressive and pushy, to under mind Zagitova's win. Some did not like the barrage of negativity started against "various russian skaters, coaches, methods" which leaked as "rumors into the press" once Medvedeva came to Canada, western media gladly picking it up and... etc.

But! Medvedeva and Co. chose to only highlight and address the "traitor" accusations, because that would deter the attention from "other negative issues she created", and give her the most sympathy.

Addressing only the "traitor to Russia" posts (from just a few people) was a blunt "Red Herring".

I was Med's biggest fan, wanted her to win over Zagitova. When Zagitova won, i was sad for Medvedeva..... Then a lot of ungracious things happened from Medvedeva's side. It was becoming more and more clear as the situation progressed, that she was/is a two-faced conniving manipulator, who did and said a lot of things for sake of publicity and popularity, while playing "perfect person/perfect athlete"... "Best 2nd daughter to Eteri", "Best Friend off the ice to Alina", "Best Russian and a Best Patriot in the whole Russia, even if 1/2 Armenian, she does not feel Armenian..", "The lover of K-Pop, which she quickly dropped after Korean Olys ended", and much much more..

A lot of her fans (not all of course) turned against her because they felt lied to and manipulated. Many also did not like Medvedeva's comments to Eteri about Alina's win (after the FS in Korea). There is not proof she said "why could not you hold Alina back for 1 year".... But there is un-official video, in K-n-C, where she is talking to Eteri and saying phrases that supposed to make Eteri feel guilty about Zagitova.

in a disdained sarcastic tone and look on her face she says to Eteri "well, congratulations.... you now have an Olympic winner"....... and then (something like) "you gave Alina all the components to make it possible beat me" or "you gave Alina all the tools to win over me"...

... and now, it is about the unfairness of her going to the Worlds, where the deck of cards were marked against Liza before "the game even started", because Med has powerful sponsors who twisted the Federation's arm to include her on the team.

So, i can assure you, it is NOT about her "moving to Canada"..

@Tinami it is hard for me to believe that this young lady https://www.instagram.com/p/BuuD4y2n5i8/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=ex9nchl3j2rr
is capable of the accusations leveled against her Yikes. Being a long time skating fan I take it all with a grain of salt.

Worlds is right around the corner and I am looking forward to seeing Med and all my favorites bringing their A game.
of course! that's your option to process info anyway you prefer, and like or dislike. that does not change how many former Med's fans feel and express it on many russian forums/chats. she lost a lot of fans, and not because "training in Canada".

As to the "A" game at the Worlds, i am looking forward to those girls who did more and risked more than the rest: Kihira with 3A's, Tursynbaeva with Quads, and Kaori is she is ready with her 3A or a Quad. As to the rest.... with their personal "soul searchings", "puberties", "perfecting feminine skate" and "whatevers".... yes, i wish them great clean skates too....

LOL, and for Bradie to bust out that 3lutz/3loop cleanly like she was in Summer/Fall. That could be a good weapon. Only Zag is doing it. (or is it a flip?)

So then Evgenia will be in final flight for SP at Worlds, along with Zag, Kaori, Satoko, Rika and Bradie? Those are the 6?

And Mariah misses it by one.

Um, Trudeau is hardly a socialist, Canada isn't socialist. Universal health care and free public education do not equal socialism, and every country in the western developed world has universal health care SFAIK, excepting the US.

As to whether Trudeau is slimy, well that's a topic for PI.
