After watching GPF with PJ and guest commentators this weekend, I want to have Dylan do more commentary. He's intelligent, witty and has a superb sense of timing in terms of talking and letting the skating talk. I hope he makes this one of his jobs in future.
Oh dear, my fan=girl crush has been reactivated!

I enjoyed his commentary too - just wish he was mic'd better as some comments were hard to hear. I actually would say that I prefer him to David Pelletier, whom CBC has used for Pairs on TV broadcasts occasionally. However I think we must remember that this was a very informal set up with Pj who could put anyone at ease so he was probably super relaxed. (I must say that when he, Pj, and Asher were all in the booth, Dylan was behaving the most maturely and keeping things more on track - but again it was set up to be really informal obviously and I appreciated that CBC put up the funds to do this for the event in Canada - the full non-commentary competitions can be a bit too quiet for me - I need someone to at least point out some good and not so good things.

Oh I have never had a doubt that Dylan would transition to commentary. Agreed, he's articulate, really insightful about skating and has an immensely approachable style. I don't see him staying away from this business at all.

It makes sense for him to get his feet wet online to get used to the process before he gets placed. As for where that would be, I would recommend he join CTV/TSN along side Tracy. She has had to 'learn' singles and pairs to analyze it so I think Dylan's knowledge would upgrade the commentary significantly. I also think Dylan's personable, happy-go-lucky style would be an excellent 'yang' to Tracy's motherly, traditional 'yin', as it were.

A year or two ago you would have had me screaming to replace Carol or Kurt on CBC but oddly I've almost gotten to the point where I darn near enjoy their broadcasts. Didn't see that coming, but it's part of the reason why I'd point him to CTV/TSN.

For almost a decade now Tracy has been coaching some of the best singles skaters in the world at the same Cricket Club where Dylan went to train Pairs. I don’t think she needs Dylan’s expertise to upgrade her commentary (although removing Rod Black from the booth might help so she doesn’t have to dumb it down so much for him). I’d love to see Dylan work with Tracy, she’s extremely experienced and it would be very good training for him.

I really, really liked Dylan's style and loved his expertise and tidbits of info on the skaters from his, recently retired point of view.

My only concern with Dylan and Tracy is that he would not be doing worlds/GP/4CC, only Canadians and Skate Canada (?). I want to him to do way more!!!

Well there is always a possibility of working with Ted with all the JGP's if at some point Ted wants to share the load and slow down a bit. It is always such an exhausting marathon but Ted loves it everyone loves him. I really do not see anyone else who could come close to Ted as far as his kindness, encouragement , technical knowhow, and charisma is. Food for thought anyways.

Rod is quite possibly a lot more knowledgeable about skating than he sounds. As host it's his job to ask the questions the network thinks the audience at home would need explained to them. It is not his job to be another top level expert. My complaint with him is only his over the top obsession with certain skaters to the point where he spoils my enjoyment and appreciation for them.

My understanding is she's more focused on SS-type training for skaters of all disciplines. But if I'm wrong and she's teaching elements specific to singles and pairs like lifts, twists, jumps and spins, please correct me as I wasn't aware.

Love her to pieces -- she's a Canadian goddess -- but I took in a lot more depth of commentary and insight in one event from Dylan that I've never heard come out of her mouth. That's a compliment to Dylan much more than a criticism of Tracy for those glass-half-empty types.

Having said that, the general market is probably just fine with her level of expertise. Some of it could also be the direction she's given from the production folks on how deep to go.

Tracy doesn’t just do skating skills, she coaches singles skaters, often co-coaching with Brian. Together they manage the skating program at the Cricket Club.

“The Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club skating program is world-class. Olympic and World medalists — and now the coaches of Olympic and World champions — Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson oversee all aspects of skating at the Club, making it the preferred choice for many international figure skaters. The Cricket Club offers year-round programs and training where participants develop fundamental skills in free skate, ice dance and interpretive skating”

I think Tracy and Dylan would be great working together. She has to watch what she says as she is part coaching quite a few skaters so it is a balance of revealing tiny bits of her skaters but researching and giving good input to the other skaters. And she has to put up with Rod's insensitivity to what to say and not say. :Like after the short program saying that Osmond was well on her way to her gold medal. And also when interviewing Tessa and Scott when they decided not to retire instead to go to 2018 Olympics he kept trying to push them into saying they had retired even though they always said they were taking a break as they had a lot more they wished to accomplish but were not sure if they wanted to do all that was required to succeed. Rod kept pushing it and finally Scott was ok..whatever.

His obsession with Shae-Lynn years ago was probably the most extreme.

Yup, Tracy sure is a goddess!

As I've said before, I actually like Rod. I appreciate his passion and enthusiasm, which I think are completely genuine. And I forgive his obsessions (i.e. "Elvis is in the building").

I understand that Kurt is a Canadian FS treasure and suppose I'm in a minority in that I am weary of his commentary. I really enjoyed David Pelletier's guest commentary. Can't comment on Dylan, as I've not heard his commentary.

I don't expect Kurt to retire any time soon and expect he negotiated a favorable contract for himself. So yes, any aspiring commentator might be better off going to CTV/TSN. Although one never knows, Tracy and Rod aren't nearing retirement.

Good commentating gigs don't open up that often.

Good points all. At first, Kurt and Carol were driving me nuts but I find I like them this year. They've relaxed and settled into a comfortable rhythm. Kurt can get really hyper and pick up the energy around him; quite interesting to see how he adapts to each person around him. He must have been a real challenge to coach! Tracy can calm any situation. Anyhow, we seem to have a wealth of talent.

Kurt is much better than he used to be. Carol no longer is hurling veiled insults at other teams. Her modus operandi now is accurately point out any mistakes the other teams make and just wax poetic about Gilles/Poirier. For Pairs technical Dave Pelletier is terrific and I found Dylan to be pretty good this one time I have seen him.

I really wanted Pelletier to do more commentary but I'm a tiny bit disappointed that his English hasn't improved much even after all this time out west. Same with Josee -- she has been tried a few times on TV and in the arena and it was a bit of a struggle.

I hear comments about how people like Bezic and Lane favor their work when commentating and I've never really felt that way about either. If anything, I have found them to be fairly cautious about not loving their skaters too much on air. I have asked for specific examples many times in these forums so I could understand better and never been given one.

As for no one retiring yet, that doesn't mean much. Sometimes you're forced out when someone better, younger or more charismatic comes along #Underhill #Hamilton

Even some people who witnessed his GPF commentary didn't 'hear' Dylan lol.
I jest, but there really were some volume issues with him. At times he was perfectly clear, then at others I struggled to make out any words. I think that if that was fixed, he'd be a great addition to the commentary team, because what could be heard was fantastic.

And add me as another who likes Rod. I read a thing with him once where he said skating is his favourite sport to commentate. And IMO it definitely shows.
I sat by the commentary booth at Canadians one year over a decade ago, and he was sometimes sitting there watching, on his own, even during some of the earlier flights when no commentary was being done.

As long as they don't invite one of Dylan's buddies as the third wheel. His commentary of the Pairs LP at the GPF - in which Asher Hill joined - started off well but veered into immature, non-stop talking territory by the end. I wanted to watch Peng/Jin skate and hear their music, not hear Dylan and Asher banter their way through the program. Partly PJ/CBC's fault for not doing a better job of managing the situation, but I was very disappointed at the end.

Does anyone have any idea what these gigs pay? I assume they make it worth their while to be a regular on CBC/CTV as Carol Lane misses her teams competitions to commentate. I guess I was wondering if this adds much to your post-skating career. Eladje seems perfect at his job - he just naturally seems like a friend to all skaters.
