To be named to the National Team a skater must finish in the top five in senior men, women, pair and ice dance disciplines at the 2018 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships and/or be assigned a 2018 ISU Grand Prix event and must be competing in the 2018-19 season. Athletes can be added at the discretion of Skate Canada based on new partnerships of current and former national team members.

I am not sure what was going on with this photo (and I say this with humour) but other than
Gabby and KMT, everyone looks like they were told to put on their dorky face. That is a seriously attractive group of people and that photo really doesn’t do them justice!

It is a very sad thing that I don't recognize half the national team :(
Bad skating fan!
Well there has been quite a bit of turnover in the past year, so you can't be too hard on yourself. I did pretty well once I started focusing on who is who, but I couldn't tell the difference between Ruest/Wolfe & Sales/Wamsteeker.

I used to do car racing (hence my pic). When I was meeting them, all my friends were wearing full face helmets and were sitting in their race car. When we met at the year end award ceremony, we were needing pictures of the car to identify ourselves... Maybe the figure skaters should wear their costumes... and skates!

I know that there are some skaters who might have competed this year but decided to retire and/or sit out this year (e.g. Osmond, Duhamel/Radford), but IMO SC is missing out on developmental opportunities by not naming five athletes in each category.

Same. I was very surprised, too.

Although, talented skaters who could potentially make the senior squad like Allison Schumacher and Marjorie Lajoie & Zachary Lagha are still competing at the Junior Grand Prix level.

I keep forgetting how much Alaine Chartrand looks like Gracie Gold. For a minute, I thought she had jumped ship and was now skating for Canada.

Am I too old (75) to learn a whole new set of skaters? I recognize about 10 and have to guess at about 5 more. The rest are a mystery, and I saw them all skate in Vancouver last January!

Well, the last time there was a big turnover I vowed "never again" but found myself being drawn back in by some of my favourites. I am going to Japan for Worlds so had better to able to recognize our team by then!

Of course Andrew will be Big Daddy. There are some seriously short men on the team, and a lot of blonde women. Even Gaby!

Like his brother Liam, I believe Shane Firus is only 170cm.

Piper looks gorgeous as well, I think. Nam kind of looks like he was photoshopped in, since he's so far away.

Also, it kind of amuses me that they list Toronto as the hometown/base for Kaitlyn and Piper. We all know they originated in the US. And even aside from that, Kaitlyn's home club was Sault ON (so they could remain representing Northern Ontario, as Andrew had been representing it with a previous partner). Her club is now listed as Granite (though they don't even train in Canada), but Piper's club is Scarboro.
There is no consistency in whether they list the city as hometown or the club represented. For Gabby (Newmarket) and Poirier (Unionville) it's hometown, but for Keegan (Sherwood Park) it's the club he represents

The ISU bios are usually better sources of information.

On Weaver/Poje's they list Kaitlyn's place of birth as 'Houston Texas' but then list her hometown as being Kitchener, ON and Fort Lee USA. I suppose hometown is whatever you identify as your 'home'? Certainly her and Piper have strong enough connection with Canada after all these years to identify it as their home town. Many of us consider our home town to have changed within a fortnight of moving somewhere new!

Also worth noting that Weaver/Poje have listed Pasquale Camerlengo and Igor Shpilband as coaches and have listed Novi as a training location (alongside Hackensack New Jersey).

Speaking of the heights of skaters, Nicholas Nadeau is a very tall and strong looking fellow for mens singles at 6 foot 1. Pairs potential there maybe? He's taller than all the pairs men.

Here's the group photo of everyone together:

How strictly is the top 5 at Nationals requirement taken? Last year's 5th place ice dance team of Sarah Arnold / Thomas Williams are not on the National Team.

That almost certainly means they aren't competing this season, whether the reason is injury, split or retirement. They'd be on the team otherwise.

I would love Nic Nadeau to make the world team as a singles skater. So much untapped potential yet.

His Elvis free program from Skate Canada last year was one of my personal favourites.

I've already mentally started pairing him with Julianne Seguin. :2faced:

He looks like he'd be a great lifter. ;)

But okay, I'll respect his wishes to be a singles skater!

Larkyn Austman continues to look like Lady Dracula.

I totally agree but am not sure about the remaining teams if there is an actual reason for not naming them or not. ie Brasseur/Bardi , Choinard/Ostiguy and then Marvaldi/Villeneuve...are the only ones I can think of offhand but am not an insider. They would all benefit by some international competition.
I also wish they would add a senior woman or 2. Emy Decelle has her triple/triple now and was scoring 160 last yr without it. That is just an example.
Anyway Skate Canada will do as it wants...They just pull out the top 5 at nationals semi-rule and that's that. They can add at their digression but obviously will not.

I'm taking it as a sign they are done unless we hear otherwise. They were rumored to be considering retirement. They would almost certainly have been selected over Sales & Wamsteeker for SC if A&W had planned to compete. And now they aren't on the national team.
