Papadakis/Cizeron #5 - We're In Love With The Shape Of You

One of the things that annoyed me the most was the ignorance of German commentators. They had basically given the gold medal to V/M after the team event already and seemed completely dismissive of G&G, if they even bothered to acknowledge them and their skills at all. Just now, they said in a summary of the day so far that silver went to the Europeans Champions. As if that were the only title they had ever won up until now.
There still seemed to be a general "Papadakis/Cizeron who's that?" attitude (even though they had been winning medals for the past three years) so naturally, V/M had to win because they are a "household" name.

Thank you for pointing this out! As much as I was dissapointed of the silver medal, what made it even worse for me were the German commentators. We all know they´re HUGE fans of Tessa and Scott. But how they talked about Gabriella and Guillaume was rude. They FEARED after their FD that they might win gold now, than they were reliefed and happy that V/M won and now they fear that Gabriella and Guillaume may win everything the next years and they HOPE there will be another couple SOON who will beat them. I mean, how rude can they be? That is what made my cry the most afterwards. Next time I´ll watch skating in a Russian live stream so I don´t have to understand what they´re talking about.
For ME, Gabriella and Guillaume are the best dancers in the world. Nobody can touch my heart and soul as much as they can. Their skating is ART and I could watch them for ages. And I´m happy that unlike the German commentator I don´t have to go on youtube to see my favourite skaters skate in shows because I´m pretty sure Gabriella and Guillaume will continue :-)

To watch it : https://streamable.com/

No, nothing new, she thanks them and tell them they did amazing. Also that they are very young and have time ahead of them. :)

EDIT : they already announced they were not retiring (obviously), they'll be at worlds.

They look very disappointed though and when the interviewer said you're young, Guillaume didn't look convinced one bit. It must be tough all those interviews seconds after such a big rush of emotions though. I know it's part of the game but I think I would just be crying all along grandma's dog dead or alive :D

@cocotaffy @Anyasnake I agree with both you. "One of the" makes a significant difference.

But I also think GOAT programs are more plausible than GOAT teams, even as comparing programs from different eras is also not very realistic. I certainly do think like you that P/C have done an exceptional number of historic programs already. To do that in such short time is crazy.

Time will tell if we're right and how strong an impression they'll make long-term.

I don't believe any P/C fan has tried to create havoc between V/M fans and the Shibs or another team fans unlike some V/M fans have done here in this forum and elsewhere etc ...
Really?? I would, um, maybe look again, especially at this season’s posts, and you may reconsider that statement. I certainly would disagree. There has been more than one PC fan here who has deliberately tried to provoke VM fans on a regular basis.

Commentators should try to be impartial on the air IMHO. How anyone can be dismissive of P&C is beyond me

I for one, rewatched the FD's and P&C truly were exquisite. I hope they stay on, fight and pull an Anissina & Peizerat in 2022. I am also of the mindset that they are too good to not have an Olympic gold medal. And who knows what will happen in singles. Perhaps a team medal is not out of the question.

I personally apologize for any angst I caused, I was simply frustrated with the judging.

Hope they have a new SD costume for Worlds and they thump the world record.

No one at my workplace follows ice dance or even the OG... but they all heard about THE BREAST INCIDENT lol.

It's a way of reaching a wider audience I guess...

Haha, if only with the incident, they new that they were 4-time Euro champ and twice world champ, it wouldn't matter that much. France needs to promote its athletes more, and its successful ones even more :gallopin1

OMG, this is really rude, no wonder that you were upset. The Russian commentators (Elena Ilinykh and the football guy) also openly stated that they rooted for V/M, but they said a lot of really nice things about P/C. Though I'm a bit disappointed that we did not get Lipnitskaya for dance, because she said during the men's free that she rooted for P/C:D Unfortunately, not all Russian commentators are so nice. I remember Averbukh saying that Gilliaume is not masculine enough:yikes:

Other than Martin Fourcade you mean? :p King of the games haha!
No but I see what you mean.. and it's even harder for figure skating because it's considered mostly old-fashioned and corrupted by plenty here... *sigh*

Ah Martin... national pride. He literally support every single athletes, PapaCiz included. He does the best job as a flagbearer. Proof : Check his twitter. He is for me the anti-thesis of the French mentality (=we always lose). There was an article about that actually, taking examples such as Martin Fourcade or P/C (I'll have to find it) with a title like : "the French that are winning".

In France we're lucky to have those teams with a lot of either originality, or personnality. It's just not interesting to look like someone else. Turns out P/C the edgy ones too, well it has to do a lot with personnality and the main reason for that is that they simply didn't watch Ice Dance. They didn't even know who Gordeeva/Grinkov were :D They only quoted V/M, D/W and Pechalat/Bourzat, because they were the top teams (and P/B were French). But it did helped them building their own way of skating/moving.

Also popularity helps and people are still stuck with Annissina/Peizerat because they are Olympic champs. Fair enough. But a little trick for all of you : if you want to show figure skating to anyone, show them Build a Home or Moonlight Sonata. Works every single time.

Yes Martin is trully inspriring. I've been following biathlon for years and I'm so glad he's getting the recognition he deserves! The win by the relay this morning cheered me up! Go France!
And P/C's time will come too, I think those games already helped them a little.
And you're right, each time people see P/C, they're like "wait... that's good actually!" Lmao

Around Christmas i bumped into a well known skating coach that indicated that the French were rumored to retire if they won. I believe it was wishful thinking for that coach. I wonder if it was true. If so, the implication after yesterday must make the loss tougher to digest.

Megan Duhamel On TSL mentioned that she would never want a skater to feel bad about winning a silver. Pap/ Ciz have left their mark on the sport BIG time. I hope they realize
That. I also from a selfish standpoint hope they stick around 4 more years.

They already implied (and told a reliable source of ours in 2017) that they were going to continue no matter what, the goal being Beijing 2022. By the way, they did a facebook live a couple of hours ago and they said that they'd be there. They are doing a media tour and frankly they seem very happy, they always put things into perspective to avoid falling into a hole. They were asked about the CAN judge and they said : "Well, we have French judges too..." It's great that they don't make any excuses.
I would like to ask you who was that coach, but I'm guessing it will stay a secret :D

A friend and I were discussing about the fact that Anissina/Peizerat didn't come up at all during any interviews, even though P/C are the most successful French skaters since they won in 2002. They have been quite outside the spotlight lately. But I was shocked when my colleague, who doesn't know anything about figure skating, remembered "that red head Russian with the guy called Gwensomething". A/P had something really captivating about them.

But I agree, I wish P/C would get more exposure, though it looks like it's getting better and better.

Yes. I can’t tell. When i told her i was a fan, i think she though casual and not Uber. She disapproved of V&M returning because.. well... you saw what happened. I was caught off guard that she took the “ haven’t they won enough” route.

I'm guessing that most of the the coaches barring Marie-France were against it :D
Ah so it's a "she"... hmmm :sekret:
The investigation continues... kidding ! I know Carol Lane, despite hw she speaks of them today, was not really happy. At the time it would have been between G/P and Paul/Islam for the 3rd spot so it could have been nerve-wracking.

I get the impression that at least some of the negativity that P/C receive is blowback from how people feel about Gailhaguet, how disgusted they are that he still has power in the sport, and they think P/C benefit unfairly from it.

I feel like I finally clicked and got Papadakis and Cizeron the way you all get them last night. I've liked previous programs they've done, but my word did they leave it all out there on the ice. Perhaps the difference was that I really felt their fight after what happened in the SD, a sort of underlying pulse of energy that I've previously said on here I thought lacking in the presto after the spins? I think rivalry has done them wonders. The whole thing was glorious, so fluid and so powerful and so detailed all at the same time, and while I was rooting hardcore for V/M, once P/C got their score and they looked set to take it I thought 'fair enough' even though I'd disagreed with their SD score, they were that good.

Really excited to see where they go from here now.

That's very strange for commentators to openly root against skaters, especially when P/C are not the close rivals of any German team. It kind of sounds personal. Are they former skaters themselves? If they are then it's strange they can't at least respect P/C's ability regardless of personal taste.

I'm sorry it affected your experience last night. I know if Tanith had done the same I would have been furious, but weirdly enough it seems like P/C received a lot more support from the American commentators than the Europeans (including the French??!!). All of them, from Tanith to Scott Hamilton, gushed about Gabi & Guillaume. Johnny was the only one who openly rooted for someone, and that was P/C. The lack of bias is even more admirable when you consider that P/C prevented both Chock/Bates and the Shib's from becoming World Champions.

Maybe their dominance in Europe is resented?

Love them! Go and dance forever please!
That picture is everything. :) I'm glad they seem to be happy/happier. They absolutely deserve all the celebration and praise.

And Martin Fourcade's great, there's no question about it. Now that I think about it, I'm so bad at rooting for my countrymen, except for few exceptions. But what can I do, I refuse to support an athlete just because he's from the same country as I am. :D

Johnny said something that stuck with me about V/M and P/C: He felt both were are at the top of their game and each offered something different: V/M was like seeing the greatest musical on Broadway (he mentioned Hamilton) while P/C was like seeing the greatest ballet company performing. And of course we all would have our individual preferences. He, as I, preferred P/C and that is not to take anything away from V/M. I was glad to see P/C had the higher score in the long and were it not for that unfortunate malfunction they would probably be wearing gold now. I do think V/M had the better short but the distraction w/the costume hurt P/C.

My fear for P/C if they won they would find the temptation to leave powerful. I hated to see Michelle Kwan lose the gold but that did mean that we would get to see her brilliance for four more years. I feel the same way about P/C and even more so. There just isn't anyone like them (particularly him.) They are so unique and hopefully the next Olympics will be luckier for them. And I do think there was respect from the American commentators for both teams but I do think there was strong, strong support for P/C. Scott said this was not like comparing apples to apples because the two teams are so different in their approach. I wish we could award two golds.

Were any of you watching that Olympics when the whole thing went down? It was very ugly. I know I stopped watching figure skating for quite a few years and then Chan and V/M brought me slowly back in. Figure skating really dropped in ratings. Just let the skaters skate. I think they want that too.
