The Shibutanis Thread Cinco...Mambo!

One more thought cause I really need to go to bed. Today, Feb. 19 in the U.S. was The Day of Remembrance, marking the signing by FDR of Executive Order 9066, which allowed for the internment of some 120k Japanese Americans.

While the dates don't quite sync, I think it's amazing to consider that with in people's lifetime Americans of Japanese Descent were interned and considered the "enemy."

How powerful that it is a Japanese American team that contributed to the medal count of TEAM USA today, nearly 76 years to the day we justified interning people just like Maia and Alex? We are far from true progress, but this seems like such a beautiful step forward.

Lol even the CBC commentators said that they skated to Coldplay three years in a row. Like, I don't get how everybody is forgetting (what is imo) their best free dance to date. I had no idea Arvo Part, Max Richter and Philip Glass = Coldplay hehe. (Coldplay wishes :p)

“Maia did this really awesome thing where she just pulled out her computer,” Alex said, describing the events of the night before. “And we started watching these old family videos that we had of us when we were little kids, off the ice, dancing around together and having a good time.…”

His voice caught. He was fighting back tears. Next to him, Maia wasn’t fighting anything back: the tears dripped down her cheeks, two decades in the making.

“Uh …” Alex said, trying to continue.

Was this the Shibutanis? Really? Usually, they are so smooth and so composed that it can be hard to elicit genuine emotions from them. Usually, they don’t want you to know that ice dancing can be physically painful, or that they push each other so hard that they fight with each other, or that ….

“Uh …” Alex said again.

Usually, they choose their words carefully, so nobody thinks they are complaining. Usually, they want you to think that they are just happy to be there, and that they aren’t too concerned with medals.

“It’s been such an amazing …” Alex said.

But usually, they have not just reached the podium at the Olympic Games.

“Our life together has been so amazing,” he said. “We are so lucky to have amazing parents.”

¨ Alex said he cried on the athletes' bus on the journey to the stadium. They had both been in a highly 'emotional' state when they performed their medal routine.¨

I'm not surprised that their performance was so incredible. Under that apparent calm, they were struggling with all those emotions and nerves, they gave everything and it was reflected in their performance.

That was a brilliant article and very revealing. I wonder if this was one of Marina’s favorite accomplishments due to everything surrounding this medal win.

Congrats to the Shibs, this is for me the best they ever skated ! :cheer2::cheer2:So, so deserved, and most importantly, it's amazing to see them so happy and rewarded for their hard work. It was maybe their most difficult season between GPF and Nationals, but it could not have ended up in a better way. All of the ups and downs were for a reason and now they have 2 bronze ! :gallopin1

Remember last week when there was all the whining and complaining about the Shibs skating both the SD and the FD in the team event. And VGT voiced many of our sentiments when she loudly dismissed the whiners and wished for the Shibs to win two medals? :cheer2::40beers:
Sweet, but I'm thrilled they skated their best and showed everybody what kind of competitors and people they are.

I made sure to watch for Marina at the venue ceremony and in ceremony pictures to see her countenance. She did seem pretty happy and was in there taking pictures with the Shibs. I imagine it is also easier this time to have one medal favorite instead of two.

Fair enough. I love both teams. So I guess you don't know what that feels like. I'm still a Shibs fan regardless of how its all we have to celebrate them, and not feel for anyone else. Get out of their thread.

Please stay with us, Aftershocks. I love your insights (even when I sometimes don't agree:)), your avatar, and the fabulous quote about felines:cat:, It must be difficult to love two teams or competitors. It's like asking a loving mother who is her favorite child. It's an impossible question to answer, You exalt in the triumph of one while you simultaneously mourn the heartache of the other.

Just thought I'd post this DailyMail write up on the Shibs:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-Olympics.html?ito=social-twitter_dailymailus

It's DailyFail so the tabloid like quality is to be expected, but at least we get lots of pics and quotes (some new and some that we've already seen and read).

"People should not be put in boxes," Maia, 23, said. "We are siblings and we are doing it our way and hopefully other teams coming up after us whether they are Asian or brother and sister will believe it is actually possible."
