Papadakis/Cizeron #5 - We're In Love With The Shape Of You

One of the things that annoyed me the most was the ignorance of German commentators. They had basically given the gold medal to V/M after the team event already and seemed completely dismissive of G&G, if they even bothered to acknowledge them and their skills at all. Just now, they said in a summary of the day so far that silver went to the Europeans Champions. As if that were the only title they had ever won up until now.
There still seemed to be a general "Papadakis/Cizeron who's that?" attitude (even though they had been winning medals for the past three years) so naturally, V/M had to win because they are a "household" name.

Honestly, I'm so sad right now. A costume malfunction that made a difference between gold and silver is an appropriately dramatic plot twist for ice dance, but it must be devastating for P/C. Their FD was gorgeous, better than their somewhat cautious performance at the Europeans. If only the margin was smaller... but no use thinking about it now, it's better to celebrate their silver medal and to look forward to seeing them again and again in the next four years. I'm sure we are in for many more masterpieces:encore:

However, I find that PC fans also conveniently ignore the fact that there are also some PC ubers who have been very obnoxious over the past two years especially, but even the year before with Shibs fans when it looked like the Shibs might challenge for the world title in 2016. There probably aren't as many just because PC have only really been competitive for the last quad, whereas VM have been competing actively as seniors for over ten years, but I think PC fans who are reasonable and not "crazy ubers" need to think twice every time they whine about VM fans because their own "colleagues" have been equally obnoxious many times.

I agree that on YouTube there are a bunch of ugly/crazy P/C and other fans as well but everywhere else starting with this forum the number of totally obnoxious/delusionnal fans is definitely in the V/M camp.

You should read again the V/M and P/C threads and compare with an open mind. I don't believe V/M have been treated of cheaters among other nice things. No P/C fan has called for public uproar in the case of no gold medal for their team etc ....

I don't believe any P/C fan has tried to create havoc between V/M fans and the Shibs or another team fans unlike some V/M fans have done here in this forum and elsewhere etc ...

So no V/M fans/ubers and P/C's are not on equal footing in the ugly behavior field. Not that it excuses any bad behavior from P/C ubers either.

Maybe we should catch up and create our very own #justiceforpapadakiscizeron :2faced: :D or a funnier one which would reflect a bit more P/C fans which I find on this forum have quite the sense of humor #justiceforthenipple

Yes the lack of notoriety for P/C was very obvious in those games. It will change I hope in the future. The French TV commentators apart from Annick Dumont were quite pathetically bad in their comments showing so much ignorance too.

I agree ! Seriously, you cannot blame P/C to be discreete with their lives and showing, but the French commentators did. It was annoying to listen. It's almost like politicking for the other team (that was quite surprising).
They have other things to do than just selling their image if they don't feel like it at all. It's a sport after all. I loved that they are very closed on their private private lives and that we only see glimpses of it than a whole story made for fluff pieces. Let it out on the ice, the French commentators were so weird these Games. :wall:

Their lack of notoriety was obvious with the audience reaction. Evevrywhere they go, P/C seduces the crowd, here I don't know why but it didn't really happen...

Olympic crowd is different, it's more of a fan crowd, so V/M and Shibs were the most applauded by a mile. Not like a Euro or World crowd who is quite knowledgeable !
Don't worry they'll get theirs in Beijing :D

Yes i hope. Still I feel as though they didn't get the applause they deserved! Booh! :)

I'm so happy it's over. I didn't think it would exhaust so much, let alone the skaters and their teams. Now, that it's over, I hope for a better environment here and on other sites. I don't want to argue which side has more crazy ubers because both are guilty, imo. But here's to hoping that when it's been proved there wasn't any 'fix', things could go back to normal at least a bit.

Gabi and Guillaume is a team whose performances touch me like no one else's. I want them to enjoy the rest of the Games, to get more positive Olympic vibe (for Beijing :D) and then to, hopefully, 'fix their mood' at the Worlds. I'm sure that after some time they'll see too that their future ahead of them really is bright and what they've done here was phenomenal. And it wasn't only about their free dance. We all remember the GPF where they proved they're exceptional in the short too.

PS: I don't think the skaters were the only ones to break records today. I don't think I breathed throughout their whole performance and that's about 5-6 minutes...

For all the things your people said in V/M's thread, SUCK IT!

You're not a V/M, I'm sorry (not for you). You're a hater, and people like you have completed polluted the V/M thread. I don't even think you're a P/C hater, specifically : you like the adversity, you probably hate everyone in front of V/M. The fact that in a moment in celebration for V/M, a huge accomplishment, a beautiful ending to their career, a testament to their strength and resilience you choose to hate another team proves it. I don't believe you're truly happy for them either - when you hate a team so unreasonably, I don't think you can truly be happy for another.

Plus, I'm pretty sure you're gutted P/C won the FD.

How come V/M have attracted so many ugly people in their fanbase ? The level of hysteria and paranoia is surprisingly elevated not to mention all the untruths/outright lies said about other teams and their fans ?

V/M are more famous, because it's their third olympics already, they have more fans, hence more crazy fans. I believe the craziness proportion is the same for the fans of P/C and V/M however (that is, quite small). But since we are not on an french speaking forum (ou plutôt, pas encore !), and the craziest fans tend to come from the country of the teams, we don't have the craziest youtube comments here.

Crazy haters coming from Canada simply have more natural access to English-speaking forums.

Romain Haguenauer (entraîneur de Papadakis-Cizeron) : «Un petit sentiment de fatalité»

Interview in French with Romain, google translated excerpt with slight editing (by me, actual francophones please correct me if I got something wrong and messed up a wording/meaning):

How do you feel about this silver medal?
(...) I have very mixed feelings. I also work with Tessa and Scott (in Montreal), I am very happy for them and disappointed for Gabriella and Guillaume. (...)

Was it difficult to put them back in the competition on Monday night?
No. Last night (Monday) we did the debriefing. This morning, I found them very focused, on the attack, as usual. The training was perfect, as needed, two or three hours before the competition. There is the emotion of an Olympic final, it is sure that it is not the same thing as a final of the French Championships. There is this little trick that they managed to use to perform while remaining focused. They were perfect, there was no sound of blade ... I couldn't have asked for more of them more today. There is no regret. We knew it was necessary to go up and also for the Canadians to make a small mistake, a small step that stuck. That was not the case, we must salute them. They are great champions. Skating last and giving the performance they did, it's strong. The judges had nevertheless chosen Gabriella and Guillaume in the free, as they had done in the short and that is what is frustrating: there is a recognition of their slight superiority on these Olympics but the fate decided otherwise. "

To say that because they already had two gold medals (one from 2010 and one from the team event here), they should have just stepped aside and "let" P&C have individual gold

You are right to feel as you do and to express how you feel, which doesn't change how I feel. :) But please note that I did not say anything about V/M needing to 'step aside to let P/C have anything.' In fact, I've also commented recently that I feel V/M by coming back added a lot to the discipline and also helped P/C in their growth process. Figure skating is a complex sport that incites passions. I don't look at it in a simplistic fashion either. My views are as complex and passionate as the sport.

I still say they did not need another gold medal, and apparently V/M did not come back for another gold medal in any case, as per their own words. Their main goal was to further explore what might be possible for their own growth as ice dancers. And they also missed competing. Now, I don't believe in essence that they weren't motivated in part to come back to win Olympic gold again, but that could not be their only reason or they would have likely failed. The whole competitive process has so many layers. It's got to be much more than the actual medal itself that pushes skaters to get up in the morning to go work out and train at the rink. It was the process too that V/M seemed to crave, and they also were really eager to experience working with D/L in a competitive capacity rather than just for shows, as was their initial plan.

@cocotaffy

Thanks :) At first, I really didn't understand why so many people on fs forums talked about goats. Guess sometimes I take things too literally :D .
But yeah, I find the concept "Greatest of All Time" stupid. Have you watched all teams ? Does is it include teams from the future ? Comparing teams in the same championship is hard enough, so when you compare people from different eras... it's pointless.

P/C are certainly the team I love and watch the most for three years now, but I wouldn't write them as the best ever forever. Teams evolve, tastes change. A debate whether or not a team from the 2010s is better than a team from 1980s doesn't make any sense on so many levels.

The only version of GOAT I can accept is one of the GOAT which makes a big difference. When has "one the best" gone out of style to impose something as radical as the best of all time on top of it. As you said, it's not possible to establish such a fact especially in figure skating.

Hey, they are babies :D Certainly not GOAT, maybe in 15 or 20 years but not after 5 seniors season, how wrong haha ! I agree with cocotaffy, you have to make the difference and and so many levels.
These statements aside, they did brought something so new, and fresh (that was much needed). In 2014, I felt with them that it was so different than the 2010-2014 quad. It was not a continuous path. But then coaching teams, choreographers all brought something, you just need the right team to do that with :puppet:
But I'm happy they had influence on the sport in less than a quad. :cheer:
