Gabriella and Guillaume comment on their programs from their first French championships in 2006:respec:

Absolutely great video, so much fun. They have a good sense of humor and definitely don't take themselves seriously. I'm all for a vintage/hommage come back with those orange costumes as per mentioned by Guillaume. Now that would be a departure #papadanakis

Article in lequipe, which explains so much better than I could explain the question of performance v winning. In P&C's own - I can't post the whole thing because it's behind a paywall but key quotes...
https://www.lequipe.fr/Tous-sports/Article/Retrouver-l-art-de-gagner/876967

The article starts with "More artists than competitors, the French dancers had trouble coping with the return of their Canadian rivals".

When they were small, they did not dream of being Olympic Champions... "I dreamt of being a writer" says Gabriella...

Guillaume "I don't watch any sport on TV, I've never dreamt of going to the Olympics, of being a champion or anything" says the skater. "I need art, in fact. Sport for sport's sake does not interest me".

Then, on the relationship to winning...
Cizeron:
"It's all well and good being a champion, but once you no longer are, you're the opposite - a loser - and that's much less easy to manage. Winning is a bit like a drug. Even if it's not something you always wanted, once you've tasted it you want more".

Then last year about the world champs (presumably referring to after the short dance). "We had already failed. If we've already failed, why would we skate, if our only goal is to win? Well because in the end, winning is not the only thing we want and it's not what motivates us to skate and work every day. When we just thought "I just want to give myself to the audience and to the moment", it was wonderful".

Thanks for all the links everyone ! They look so happy, especially in the interview with Nathalie Péchalat, it makes me happy for them, whatever happens. I was a bit stressed for them before, but I realize I don't need to be - they got this.

They're great, OGM or not :) I just want the world to see them more !

I can't wait for the whole world to see their magical performances. :D They definitely get more recognition, though. There's a spot on Eurosport for the ice dance competitions and it features clips of Gabi and Guillaume only, saying sth like "Can Papadakis and Cizeron dance their way to the Olympic gold." I was over the moon when I saw it. :)

I don't know if any of you guys reads the site Previously.TV, but they have a fun Ice Skating forum. There's a particularly knowledgable participant (at least it seems to me) who is highly critical of the technical flaws in P/C's dancing and considers V/M (and I think the Shibs too) to be clearly superior technically. Now, this poster does not seem like a know-nothing, flaming-throwing uber, but considered and knowledgable, and she/he seems to think that there really is no legitimate way for P/C to beat V/M.

I know there are a number of very knowledgable ID aficionados here and was wondering if any of you would be interested in taking a look at some of the critiques and addressing them.

And just so you know, I'm a long-time skating fan who doesn't have much in-depth understanding of the technical side of ID. The beauty of P/C's skating brought me back to even watching ID. I'm hoping they win, but not if there is some kind of corrupt politicking behind such a win. I'm hoping that the poster I'm referring to simply has a strong point-of-view and that there is a truly legitimate case to be made that P/C are superior.

All this season as commentators on US television, Tanith, Ben Agosto, and Charlie White have presented P/C and V/M as equals, with one team having the better SD and the other having the better FD. They've said that if both skate to the best of their abilities, choosing the winner will splitting hairs and come down to personal preference. They've said repeatedly P/C and V/M are in a league of their own, which includes the Shibs (and despite the fact that Tanith and Charlie are close enough to the Shibs to have invited them to their wedding). Tanith, Ben, and Charlie all have earned Olympic medals under IJS, and they all coach as well. Personally I trust their knowledge.

I've seen the exact same comments, and I think one of the exact same posts elsewhere, on this forum I believe. And I'm sorry to say this... but your Uber-radar is not working ! Unacceptable :argue:
So, no. Same talking points, people often forget to watch feet or see what they want. I should do a bingo with these (untrue) facts though, I may have fun tonight.
Don't worry : 1) If the Shibs were in P/C's place, they would be talked that way, maybe even worse because some people (translation : TSL) are feeding the ubers with stupidities (without real ice dance knowledge). 2)Commentators, some of them are specialists, disagree, praising the technique 3)Marie-France herself say : "Technically, they start from an even field" (Icenetwork interview).
I mean, point out all the defaults you want or you see, sure ! I could find you another hundreds (fabricated) the same way with other teams... but okay. But truly in these comments there was nothing properly technical  (purely - some things the skating fan can see but not more tbh).
One thing for sure, P/C aren't perfect and thankfully we can acknowledge that, because nobody is. Now if some would stop thinking that their faves are, it would make things a lot more normal.

I've talked to ISU-level Ice Dance judges and Technical Callers and the praise for P&C has been universal. Anyone saying they are deficient or technically inferior to V&M (and the Shibs, *shudder*) doesn't know what they're talking about is clearly driven by an agenda.

On V&M, I really think it's about the style you prefer. V&M have easy power. P&C have easy flow. Beyond that, it's just a matter of preference, but no one in the world touches these two teams IMO.

I was so nervous but it looked like they were a bit too. I guess the fd will decide everything. Btw, I was so happy they didn't get a deduction for that costume slip at the end. The dress is fine all season long and it has cause troubles right now. :wall: Poor Gabi.

Gabriella had a Boobleva moment in their ending pose. Higher PCS than Virtue/Moir though. 1.74 points so this isn't over.

Nope it isn’t. They should be foot perfect in the free though.

I say go for elastic not buttons, girls.
I hate when incidents like this happens. It’s such a pity. :(
