Heading back to England-question

A co worker suggested that too.

I think we are going to fly into Dublin from Toronto. Then, fly from Dublin to London.

Last time I did Britrail through England and it was amazing. But price wise, it is cheaper to just fly.

Thanks!!

You often get much cheaper flights to North America from Dublin because of the heavy ($200 USD equivalent) departure tax out of London.

From Dublin to London, check Kayak or Google Flights. Remember a couple of things:

(1) The discount airlines can be very restrictive with baggage policies. Make sure you clearly understand what is and is not included in your ticket. EasyJet and I believe now Ryanair allow you one piece of baggage (no separate personal item) TOTAL. You can get around this by buying priority boarding (usually only a few pounds/Euros), but if you don’t, you’ll be hit with a 40 Euro/pound fee.

(2) Be mindful of what airport you fly into and out of. Luton is very far from London and requires a bus to rail connection. (It is also the nastiest airport I’ve seen in Europe — looks like a temporary structure.). Stansted is also far from London, an hour or more by train to most places. And Southend-on-Sea..... for awhile, I thought it was made up, but it does exist; again, very far from London. It’s worth a premium to fly into Heathrow, City, or (depending on where you’re going) Gatwick.

London to Dublin- what is the best/ easier/ cheapest route to get there?

Dublin-London is one of the busiest routes in terms of traffic with plenty of options. I believe there are flights from from Dublin to six airports serving London. Probably best to decide which airport in London will be most convenient to where you are staying.

London City Airport - Most central. Small airport used a lot by business people because it's quick and easy getting in and out. CityJet and British Airways.

London Gatwick - Prefer this to Heathrow if I'm flying into London. Aer Lingus and Ryanair both fly here.

London Heathrow - Hate Heathrow with a passion so I avoid it at all costs. Not too bad if you are not transferring. Aer Lingus and British Airways both fly here.

London Luton - Bit further out than either Heathrow or Gatwick. Only Ryanair fly here.

London Stansted - See above.

London Southend - Only airport serving London that I have never used so can't really comment on it. Served by Flybe.

Just to let you know that you can buy each of the legs separately if you are returning to Dublin (although you will be charged in sterling for the London-Dublin portion in that case). Apart from CityJet, you will have to add on luggage to your ticket. Ryanair also require you to check-in online in advance or else you will be charged extra at the airport.

I hate Gatwick and would take heathrow any day ;) depends what part if london you’re staying. Both have good links into central London. Gatwick to Victoria, Heathrow to Paddington. Luton is a nightmare, hard to access, small with few facilities, old and unpleasant. Avoid buying a gatwick express ticket, the regular ticket is half the price and only 5 min extra.

Ryanair also require you to check-in online in advance or else you will be charged extra at the airport.

Yes, and if travelling on Ryanair with a non-EU passport, you must print and then stand in a queue to have your passport checked and boarding pass stamped. If you don't print, you'll be charged (I believe) £60, and if you don't get the stamp, they may not let you on the plane.

Ryanair is the only carrier that seems to require printing and stamping. My American-only friends don't have to print and stamp with any of the other discount airlines.

I had forgotten about the “Visa Check” thing that Ryanair do for non-EU passports. Out of Dublin it shouldn’t take you that long.

I am going back to the Rembrandt Hotel near South Kensington. Their breakfast was amazing and it is close to everything. We flew into Gatwick from Toronto and it wasn't too bad to Victoria station and then onto the South Kensington tube stop.

When my Aunt and I were there, we got lost in Hyde Park on the Marijuana 4/20 day there. lmao

Thanks for the tips. We are going in September so more lighter packing. May be able to get away with a smaller suitcase. Have to see.

Any suggestions on best tours or gems not known for Ireland?

I want to see Giant's Causeway and Cliffs of Moher but would also love to see any historical sites.

In London, goals are London Eye for my niece and tooling along the Queen's Walk on the Thames up to Tower Bridge. (Hitting the Anchor Pub of course)

She wants to see Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace and Kensington.

We have 4 days there so not sure best route for this yet lol.

Southend-on-Sea Airport is an hour's train ride from Liverpool St. Station. It's great for going to Obskur European Destinations like Rennes that are otherwise difficult to get to from London, but if you are staying in the center of London or the East End, City Airport is a much more convenient airport.
