Vocals in Skating

Just wondering how you guys feel about it since we are entering what i believe is the 4th year with them.

Personally, i think the men's selections are the worst in general. The dancers are doing well and have great taste.

I like vocals. It injected some much-needed life into this sport. I was getting sick of hearing the same music over and over again. With vocals, we are more likely to see/hear something different. Besides, I would much rather watch a Beatles program with real Beatles music vs. an instrumental easy listening version of the Beatles. Ditto for other pop/rock bands.

I really dislike them. Sometimes they are not horrible, but I find that rare. I got used to vocals in ice dance for some reason better than I did the other disciplines. I still prefer music without vocals in every discipline though.

it would be great except for the fact that skaters love covers, just talking about the Beatles, Chock/Bates will be using Imagine sung by a random woman and man. in the olympics, no less. D/R are using a cover of U2 too . Yuna used Imagine in the ex in Sochi sung by a woman :wall: . And I con´t think they are looking original doing it, if they want show originality, they should choose an original song, not a mediocre cover of song worldwide known.

in another topic, I would be happy if voiceovers are banned forever.

I am also old-fashioned when it comes to music. I sometimes find vocals to be distracting.

Oh yeah, I agree about the voiceovers. As for the cover versions, my guess is that the original artists either wouldn't give the skaters the rights to the "real" version, or else the skater couldn't afford to pay for the rights to the "real" version. (Or maybe skaters like those sappy covers?)

^^ I think there's something to the "skaters like those sappy covers" theory.

Obviously #notallskaters but... way too many

Or the coach/choreographer comes from the older generation that doesn't like "hard rock" music, which means any song with a guitar or where the singer doesn't have a "pretty voice." So they push the muzak version on their student. ("Trust me, the judges will like this better. It sound much more pleasant than that version by those long-haired hippies.")

I'm not sure if I'm old-fashioned about music used for skating but at least half of the songs with vocals are hokey, overdone, boring, or just plain un-inspiring.

True, but I'll take even the hokiest pop drivel over yet another version of "Carmen."

I think Yuna has enough money to pay . Anyway if the rights is the problem it would be better dont use it or use an instrumental version. I mean, they prefer a famous song sung by a nobody :scream:? It looks cheap.

I've rarely enjoyed them. I did like when Javi did his Barber of Seville and Guys and Dolls free programs - mostly instrumental with a vocalized bit that just blended in perfectly. To me, that's been the most effective use.

Sometimes I feel like I am watching a bad musical revue with a mish mash of everything but the kitchen sink thrown in especially from the ladies. It is somewhat distracting for me to appreciate the skating if the vocal choice is not good.

You're sooooo right. The covers are atrocious

Can you imagine if vocals were allowed during Tonya Harding's 1990-1991 LP or Oksana's LP or Nancy's 1993-1994 LP? I have a feeling Katarina's humming Where Have All the Flower's Gone would not have been the only time she would have used her voice if lyrics were allowed either.

At first I was totally against vocals. After one year I was grateful that we didn't have to listen to the same music over and over. The flip side was I was not thrilled with the music I had to listen to either. I like the fact that skaters have a much wider choice in selecting music. I wish they would make better use of that freedom.

I find it distracting most of the time. But it's more a problem of choice. I don't like when a skater takes the lst hit song, or a generic variety song...
It was the same without lyrics in fact, it's just a matter of taste. ;)
