Since BB has become unwatchable, let's start discussing the new season of Survivor.

http://www.cbs.com/shows/survivor/p...et-the-cast-of-heroes-vs-healers-vs-hustlers/

I have been rewatching previous seasons this past summer, up to the beginning of season 5.
I found Season 4 - Marquesas - which introduced Boston Rob, Kathy (will pee to help out), the purple rock eviction - very interesting to rewatch. The strong guys like Hunter and Boston Rob were voted out, an alliance of 4 strong people - also voted out and Vecepia won. Having an alliance was bad. Boy have things changed. Boston Rob was very influential!
I am really enjoying rewatching the show. I know the outcome, and by binging, I can pay attention and see things I did not see before.

I'm also re-watching previous seasons of Survivor all the time. Kathy was so disliked in the beginning, but she quickly became everyone's favorite (myself included). Didn't she fix her bra or something in the final immunity challenge and that caused her to lose balance/take her hand off of the pole?

Survivor remains my favorite of all of the reality competitions. This previous season had so many twists and turns.. it's never going to grow old for me. All of my friends, who know I'm a fanatic, always say 'that show is STILL ON?' Why yes it is.

Yes to why Kathy fell off since she was fixing her bra. Even brought at final tc- that she was the deserving winner. Bitter jury!
And I have the same thing said to me by friends when I say I am still watching Survivor.
I love how it has evolved and still entertains.
My one wish is that they should do a retro season, in HII, no tribe switch ups, and watch everyone assume those twists will be happening. I would lmao.

I do wish they reused some of the challenges though. lately it is some kind or racing and puzzle combo. Season 4 had them make kites! And some of thes earlier seasons had them make SOS signs to be seen from sea or air.

Whenever I think of Kathy, all I can think of is her bright white smile--she ate so many limes in the Marquesas that the acid ate the enamel off her teeth. :scream:

Some of the Survivors have really paid for their time on the show.

Wasn't she fixing it because Neleh pointed out to her that the strap was showing? Quite the subtle distraction move. And yes, S4 was the beginning of the BITTAH Jury. The Rotu 4 overplayed their hand during the elimination challenge, causing those on the outs to band together. It's funny how I can recall a lot of the details from the early seasons without having watched them again. Except S3. That season was super boring :P

Boston Rob was a douchey hothead in S4. I'll never be a fan of his, but he is incredibly smart, and he had the wherewithal to look at why he was eliminated so early and change his game/attitude when he got the chance to come back for the first All-Stars. Of course, he hasn't changed it at all since then, but the new version got him damned close in both Survivor and TAR, made him a lot of fame and money, and Burnett & Co finally figured out a way to get him a win

It's crazy that no one was willing to force a tie after S4 until, what, S32?

Anyway, what's all this about "Healers"? Meh. What's wrong with just saying Villains?

Except S3. That season was super boring :p

That was the season that they learned that if they made the cast suffer too much, everyone was too weak to do any plottin' and schemin' and the producers started making sure that they didn't go too long without water and food. Every time someone I know complains that the cast starts off with food and water from the beginning now, I remind them of S3.

I know it's not very popular, but I actually liked S3. There were some great challenges and an interesting cast. And I thought the glimpse of Africa was fascinating.

There's a quiz on Jetpunk where you have to name all the contestants to ever play Survivor, which I may have played a few times :shuffle:, and every time, the only people I can remember from S3 are Ethan, Lex and Tom. And all I remember is various shots of lions in the distance, and old man Tom pulling a stinger or something from one of the young, nubile contestants' ass while she was squealing (and he was grinning lecherously). And Lex's gut (or was that from All-Stars?).

The most interesting thing about S3 was that production screwed up one of their trivia questions and had to retroactively award Lex and Tom 2nd-place prize money, even though they finished 3rd and 4th, respectively.

Lindsay didn't have any piercings. That's what Lex got right but was counted wrong. I think she was also the stinger girl.

Then there was thong-wearing Mama Kim (second place, I think), Frank, Brandon (the archery challenge!), T-bird, and Kelly, who went on to be a Survivor producer.

That's (with Tom, Lex and Ethan) more than I remember about a lot of other seasons.

Looking forward to this. We've been watching Australian Survivor in the off-season to tide us over and it's been great - the challenges seem harder than in the "original" version. Cheering for Jarrad to win everything :biggrinbo

Lots of strong personalities, paranoia, and scrambling on day 1! All of these people seem to know exactly how the game goes so it would be glorious if there was a secret advantage maybe three times this season and NO idols. And I think someone on this board suggested that they do a season that returns to the roots with no twists or idols, but don't let the castaways in on it. That would make for amazing TV.

I did think that having the advantage only valid for the next TC - whether your tribe was going or not - was a clever twist even if it didn't have much effect. I recall last season those of you who watched (I didn't) found it hard to track so many idols and advantages - who had them, who knew about them, how long they were valid etc. Having it valid only once and immediately gets the game back to its roots in that you have to focus on the social and physical game and the rest is just gravy.

Agree w @purple skates - good start to the season!

I wasn't surprised to see Ryan gift the advantage to Chrissy, since she was the one who had the collapse at the end of the challenge and he probably thought she was most in danger. Poor Katrina was voted out first and got next to no screen time -- WTF. I originally thought that Chrissy using the advantage was a huge wasted opportunity, but I'm guessing she thought that being (currently) #5 of 5 in the group with a chance to sway people later on was better than being in the minority of a 3 vs 2 situation where you've pissed off the majority.

I'm surprised how quick people jump into these flirty relationships on this show. It hasn't worked for anybody after Romber stomped all over everyone 13 years ago. Everybody sees the pairs as a threat, and past winners of this game have said one of the keys is to bust them up since they will always be a bloc of 2. I don't see Ashley AND JP making it near the end, but one of them could.

Are Ashley and JP really a pair or was that just the football player's paranoia?

One thing I like about her not using it (and why bother revealing your hand at this stage unless she was the one with the most votes) is that in theory, only 3 people even know it existed. They all think there are idols and advantages everywhere, so they can keep freaking over who might have them, but they have no idea how powerful that one was, and that there was a cross-tribe element.

My husband thought that the kid who got it should have told his whole tribe once he knew they weren't going to TC to ingratiate himself with them, but in retrospect I think it was smarter to keep it quiet, using it only to form what appears to be a promising alliance with one other person.

I'm wondering if Chrissy made a mistake by not using the power given to her. As Fridge_Break just mentioned, it looks like she's put herself into the #5 position (of only five people). When Alan went to Chrissy and Katrina mid-episode, he wanted to know what they should do as nobody had talked to him about anything. And then at tribal council, he said that everyone was talking about which of the two older ladies should go. He completely contradicted himself. I don't know why she didn't play innocent and confused and say, "...but I thought earlier you said you hadn't heard anything." This would have put unflattering attention onto someone else. Then when it was tie to vote, she could have broken up a power couple and voted out Ashley, who wasn't a big powerhouse that they needed to win challenges. These two moves would have been a great way to open at final tribal council. "In one brief moment, I eliminated two players and broke up a power couple before it overpowered the rest of my tribe".

I'm surprised how quick people jump into these flirty relationships on this show.

I don't remember seeing any flirtation between Ashley and JP. Just two people working together, adding a second pair to their alliance for a voting block...and that was it. Hmm...now I'm wondering if we did have one line from Ashley saying she thought JP was attractive? Still, I'm not sure if they've gotten to the point of being much more than simply two people working together.

Are Ashley and JP really a pair or was that just the football player's paranoia?

Alan talked about his actions being purely strategic. And that this would make him look crazy, but he was okay with that. As long as it put focus onto (what he thought was) a power couple that needed to be split up.

But she also could have realized that there was tension already amongst the four that didn't include Katrina and herself, and sees an opening to get in with a group of two to then have a 3-2 majority alliance for however long the tribes are separated/not switched up. The clip from the next episode shows that she's already scheming with Ben.

But I agree about Alan. He's all over the place already and thinks he can read people exceptionally well. But it's just going to come across as paranoia. I really hope he's not the odd ball out that becomes the deciding vote for a long while until he finds himself close to the finals.

Maybe, but on the other side of it, she might have put a large target on herself and Katrina, and revealed either than she has a friend on another tribe, or if they think it was hers the whole time, that she was being secretive and sneaky.

This way she got to relax and really observe what was going on prior to and at TC without worrying about her own fate, something no one else got to do.

Plus, there are three tribes - it'll be at least three days before they have to do this again, and perhaps 6 or 9 days or more, and a lot can change.

Alan talked about his actions being purely strategic. And that this would make him look crazy, but he was okay with that. As long as it put focus onto (what he thought was) a power couple that needed to be split up.

It's a risky strategy. Sure it's distracting and maybe people want to keep you as a shield, and maybe he's so confident in his athletic abilities that there's no way he'd get voted out in this early stage, but there are equally if not more reasons to get rid of a paranoid nutjob, especially if they lose again and feel the need to come together as a team.

Good grief. How you all remember their names already! It will be like half the series before I get their names down. I do like Found The Advantage guy, and actually let out a cheer when he grabbed it off the boat. Something he said in his first interview, before he found that Advantage, made me laugh and I instantly liked him. Can't remember what it was now, but he made me laugh, so I'll be rooting for him. Hate the Paranoid Guy. Geez I hope he goes next. The guy on Yellow Team (who kinda looks like John Turturro when he played Herb Stempel in 'Quiz Show'), :P, I like him. I can't remember anyone else enough to remember if I formed an opinion on them or not.

I googled all kinds of sites trying to find one which had everyone's photos with their names underneath. Found nothing. So I started my own list:

Alan football
Chrissy older
(Ashley
JP)
Ben cowboy

Will do something similar for the other tribes when necessary.

I enjoyed the episode. Seems like some people are really playing.
I agree - 6 person tribe is not my favorite.
Eye roll at 'being a mom' is a hero. Nothing against moms. But again the use of the word hero in general seems to be losing its meaning.
I too get confused with the names and who is who.
But - Alan - NFL guy - I wanted to like him, but he may be too crazy for me.
I think it is the bald headed guy on Healers - he gives me vibes like Tony - especially possible manic side of him.

As I mentioned earlier, I am rewatching old Survivor.
Just watched the first few episodes of Season 7 - Pearl Islands - pirate theme - and introduced us to Sandra, Savage, Jonny Fairplay, Osten (the quitter) and Rupert among others. First episode was 90 minutes - and it was so awesome. They thought they were going on a photo shoot, so many were not dressed appropriately. They had to go to a small town to buy/barter for supplies. I wish they would do something like the shopping/bartering etc again.

Another really good episode. People are playing.
Patrick is kookoo, wish he was gone (plus to save his skin - his a red head - is there enough sunscreen? - I burn easy, so I always worry for some folks).
There is more to Simone than what we saw - her comments in TC - wow. I would have booted her too. But I think we know how Patrick will be, where it would have been cool to see how Simone developed.
I am liking several people, not sure of names, but some of the young guys - guy flirting with old lady - Devon?
Cole? Ryan - I think Jeff is liking him.
Chrissy - I was liking her, but now I am thinking she may get cocky. She is covering her bases
Ben seems cool.
Ali - I like her, she looks like a younger version of a friend of mine, so that may be making me biased. She seems sharp.
Fisherwoman - get over that you worked alone - I am assuming you applied to be on the show.

Back to Season 7 - I finished it. It has so many good elements, but Lill just lost it for me. Back to a few season before that - another 'older' lady - Jan - that was not really playing. I hate players like that - they can't lie, don't play.
As much as I did not like Brian as a player - he was at least playing.

I wonder if the Heroes were sorry they didn't have the Olympic swimmer on their team this week. I didn't recognize Katrina until I saw her last name and thought it sounded familiar; I remember her comeback.

Interesting to hear Chrissy's strategy for not using the idol--she's a sharp cookie and I expect her to be in the game for a long while. They wouldn't waste so much time showing her strategy at this point if it weren't going to go somewhere.

OTOH, the preview showing the two people plotting to get rid of the bald guy? Not gonna happen. Teasers like that never come through.

Chrissy ~ yes great strategy. I am picturing a great blind side after she gives someone the idol.
She could be getting a winners edit, but also so obvious in episode #2? Makes me think maybe not
Is she making too many one on one allies? It should be fun to watch.

Indeed - I didn't know she could hang onto an invalid idol, and that is a supersmart strategy. She can either show it dramatically to the right person, or perhaps even let it slip out of her bag at some point when she thinks she's on the block.

The extensive edit on her strategy was a "whoa she's going soon" alarm for me - agree that if she's going to win this it's very early to show her game, so maybe she's going in the next few eps and that's why they gave it so much play.

Ali's (I think that's her name - the celebrity assistant?) struggle re Patrick was interesting, as was Ryan's logical breakdown, and I really thought that Patrick's "I trust almost everyone" was the nail in his coffin, but as @smurfy said some of her comments in TC and certainly to us show she's got real human insight here, so a double excuse to get rid of her along with her challenge play in this phase of the game. Good that Patrick is now on notice though - even though he only got one vote he's got to see that he's on the bubble, and perhaps Ali will even let him know that she managed to "save" him.

Enjoying this season so far :)

In Simone's post-exit interview, she says that Ali and Patrick knew each other prior to Survivor, having attended college together and lived across the street from each other.

From an interview with Jeff Probst:

Okay, tease us up for next week’s episode, sir!
It’s rare but every so often on Survivor, the pheromones kick into gear and love blooms.

:P

This is probably first survivor where i don't dislike at least one contestant by 2nd round. But i do NOT see any of the participants displaying any specific distinctions or qualities of a Hero, a Healer, a Hustler. Also, there is nothing attractive about people in soiled undergarments, with outline of the genitals showing when wet..... Bathing suits would be just fine...

Watched it again tonight because DH didn’t see it yesterday. I take back my pronouncement about Chrissie and the urologist. Although I do have a suspicion he will go far.

This season is so millennial. which makes sense, because all of the non-millennials are getting too old for Survivor. The ones there just look so...old. :wuzrobbed
