Favorite Films 2000-2016 Edition

I forgot about "The Pianist"! It's one of the 3 best films about the holocaust of all time:

(1) Schindler's List
(2) The Pianist
(3) Sophie's Choice

All very different and about different aspects of the holocaust, but there has never been anything better filmed about that time in history.
I also like the Italian movie (in a very different style than the ones you mentioned though) Life is beautiful. I found it quite touching. And if you haven't seen it, I advise you Night ant Fog , very powerful.

Have you seen Fateless or Korczak? They are IMO the finest films about the holocaust I've personally seen. Korczak isn't from this century (I think it's from 1990) but I thought it was an incredible movie.

I must add "The Help."
Philomena
Saving Mr. Banks
Captain Phillips
Bridge of Spies
The Devil Wears Prada
Warhorse
Hugo
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

I'll probably think of others to add!

ITA with Schindler's List and Sophie's Choice. The Pianist, oth, I don't remember living up to the hype. (*shrug*)

Others that I'd add to the list of best Holocaust movies before The Pianist would be God on Trial and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I'm guessing Son of Saul will make the list too but I haven't seen that one yet.

Also that one from about 4 or 5 years ago, about the girl who is taking care of her younger siblings after her parents disappear (are arrested?), and she finds out bit by bit the true story of what her parents did during the war. I remember it being excellent, but I can't remember the title (it was the girl character's name).

The Pianist exceeded my expectations. It's one of the best films ever, IMO.

The boy in striped pajamas is the most heart breaking movie I have ever seen.

This weekend I will do more work on finding my most favorite movies 2000-2016.

I saw a lot of movies I really liked, but didn't see anyone mention Whiplash, which I thought was fantastic and might seem familiar for some skaters, coaches or parents (the 'do anything' drive for success).

Favorite really depends on the mood, for me.

Thinking/Drama: The Imitation Game, The Usual Suspects, The Hurt Locker, The Departed (just watched with my boys and they were mesmerized).

Action/Adventure: Gladiator, Dark Knight.

Comedy: In the Loop - definitely for adults, but a riot, s many little jibes.

Guilty Pleasure: Deadpool - a Marvel movies for grown ups (probably more guys than gals) who are jealous that the kids got all the cool superhero movies. See it at a theater with a crowd, it is as good as the trailers.

Sleeper (Unexpectedly good): Spy -I never would have thought to go to a Melissa McCarthy movie, but a friend dragged me and my 13 y/o son along, and now we can't wait for the sequel. She was absolutely hilarious and if you think Jason Stratham is just another talentless action flick sellout, his comic timing and willingness to mock and satirize himself might just make you think twice.

Super Guilty Reverse Cultural Awareness Favorite: Dale and Tucker versus Evil - If you are a misunderstood redneck (like me) and are tired of always being portrayed in the movies as uncultured, ignorant xenophobes, here is your hilarious revenge. If you are not a redneck, expand your horizons by checking out a typical back-woods, slasher b-movie from the redneck's perspective. Its not high art, it's just fun, so grab your popcorn and be prepared to laugh out loud.

Mock Up on Mu
Anything directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Lucrecia Martel, or Hou Hsiao-Hsien
Paranoid Park
Spring Breakers
The Heart of the World

This is what I have so far. This list is more well-known films. I have to go back to my Netflix and Hulu, etc. queues to come up with lesser-known films that I loved but may have forgotten during this period:

Brooklyn
Mommy
Boyhood
Cloud on Sills Maria
Wild
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
Frances Ha

I have to say the scene where Albert is proposing to the young Victoria really gets me every time. Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend played that scene perfectly. I guess I'm just a sap.

I Loved Girl with a pearl earring. I bought the book after that and also a coffee table book of Vermeer's paintings. It's amazing how much Scarlett Johansson looked like that painting.

I also liked A History of Violence. Especially Viggo Mortensen's performance. He showed masterful use of facial expressions and body language.

Ita. At another site which is very male dominated (the alpha type) they all talk about the sex scene on the stairs. When I first saw the scene I could not help but think of her back and thought OUCH. It was a good scene though and showed him as the man he was before he changed.

I thought the sex scenes in HOV were fantastic but especially the rough one. I was actually expecting something raunchier and more explicit since it's Cronenberg but the way he worked both sex scenes into the movie were great.
