U.S. Capitol Shooter Apprehended

WTOP radio reports that a Capitol police officer was shot but not seriously wounded and a gunman is in custody.

ETA: Congress is not in session and the shots were apparently fired in the Capitol visitor center.

ETA: WTOP reports that the situation is under control.

ETA: The shooter was shot by police and has been transported to a hospital according to the Washington Post. They also report, "There has been an isolated incident at the U.S. Capitol Center,” D.C. police tweeted. “There is no active threat to the public.”

Glad about that. Wasn't today the annual Easter Egg roll at the White House? Could have been a scary situation with all those children if this shooter had been closer and not overcome. The Capitol is close enough (although some distance away, if my memory is correct. It's been a few years since I was in D.C.)

From the link above, it sounds like the gun set off the metal detector at the entrance so the gunman pulled it out and was shot by an officer before he could fire.

Actually the Capitol is quite a ways from the White House so it wouldn't really be a threat. But there are lots of tourists in town for the cherry blossoms! So there are a lot of people at the Capitol though Congress isn't in session. We're lucky this was ended so quickly.

Yeah, I just now googled it and it is just under two miles. I remembered it being at one end of the mall, with the White House being off a bit to the side of the mall, but I didn't remember the mall being so long! No wonder I was tired from all the walking I did that day! And I just realized that it probably was nearly 20 years ago. As you said, good that things were resolved quickly and without any innocent people being injured.

ETA: :duh: Don't know how I forgot about being in D.C. for Worlds in 2003, but I didn't do a lot of sight-seeing that trip. Spent most of my time inside the Verizon (MCI) Center that week, with only a few excursions outside. Still, it's embarrassing that my memory is so inaccurate. :slinkaway

Duh, I guess I should have read the story linked here. I'm very glad the event was nipped in the bud. I wonder what this person had been planning. :(

I read that one bystander was hit by shrapnel and injured.

This must have been a very unpleasant interruption of a fun day for tourists. :(

This is so frightening. I was at the US Capitol Visitor Center on Saturday morning. The security people there were so nice, even let a bumbling Aussie tourist duck outside to empty her water bottle on the grass. :(
