Thought I'd start a fan thread for Starr Andrews after being wowed by her performance last night! :cheer2:

I'd seen a lot of mentions of her, mainly because of her noticeable name, but I didn't realize she was the inspiration for the most viral skating video on YouTube yet, from when she was 9. It's got 52 million views so far:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBxpjtcBAG8

Here's her short program from the other night:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc9d5wJbUxg

Here's her long program from last night:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VkIrQXQZSE

I mean, skating to Beyoncé and your own Whitney Houston cover has got to put you in contention for FSU Gay Icon. :glamor:

A mention of her family situation which I wasn't aware of:

Here's to this bright young star continuing to shine brightly! :cheer2:

Is the Michael Weiss Foundation application process open to all skaters or only those at his local rink? Andrews is certainly a skater who could benefit. The costs are only going to go up as she moves up the ranks. I hope her results here will help with sponsorships and maybe a few endorsements. That video of her at age 9 is adorable.

Starr's new official website was launched in June 2017: http://starrandrews.figureskatersonline.com
(@UMBS Go Blue, that was her personal website before FSO's.)

I don't believe the Michael Weiss Foundation is still active at this time (can someone confirm?).

Starr's Sponsorship page on her current (eta: and older) website lists the New England Amateur Skating Fund (NEASF) for donations: http://starrandrews.figureskatersonline.com/contact/

There was a Starr thread that dates back to 2011 that I had attempted to resurrect last season once she started to gain some Junior credentials (which I think has since been archived).

Anyways, I'm pleased for Derrick Delmore, as he'll be coaching Junior Worlds entry Starr and choreographed Ting Cui's programs.

What I'm not pleased is the Internet already "recommending" which coach Starr should move to next season. Tacky, imo.

Yes, the original thread on Starr Andrews (started in GSD in January 2013) has been archived. The first video link posted in it was her "Whip My Hair." :)

A few posts from that archived thread:

Jan. 31, 2013 (you are not forgotten here, Ziggy :():
I thought she'd never get anywhere judging on her jumps in that famous YT video but I see she can do a 2axel. Nice. I hope she keeps at it. :)
August 24, 2016:
Starr Andrews was 6th at 2016 Novice US Nationals. Appears she's transitioning to Juniors this year ...

Whoever is managing her twitter is on point - 12,000+ followers is impressive.
January 2017:
The Ice Musings blog published an interview with Starr Andrews before Nationals :): http://icemusings.com/blog/andrews-ready-to-shine-in-kansas-city/
Congrats on your US Junior silver medal Starr Andrews!

Hope she gets some Junior Grand Prix assignments next season.
I hope she is part of the conversation in seniors, her performance quality is just so good! :D

Here's a full video of this program -- "What about Angels" by Birdy, choreographed by Andrews' coach, Derrick Delmore -- from a December 2016 holiday show in San Diego: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QTISNhqcXo

P.S. Thank you, @UMBS Go Blue, for not using a pun on Starr's name for this fan thread. :D

I already posted in the US ladies thread, but congrats to Starr on a wonderful first Nats as a senior. I hope there will be many more! She was a highlight of the event. I love her drive and ambition and she must be a hard worker to deliver like that too. It is amazing that she has been able to accomplish this with a skater mom who's not at full strength. (Starr's website says her mom has had 11 heart attacks. :( :( :( ) Very best wishes to Starr and all her family!

I love when young skaters skate to music they obviously like and hence, feel and know what to do with! Hope she can stay true to herself, keep improving and won't get sidelined by injury or puperty. She's the first lady I'm really excited about since Sasha Cohen., she's got amazing lines and nice spin positions.

I had never seen Starr Andrews skate, before last night, and I didn't know she is just 16 until I saw her on my screen. What a great way to debut at the senior level! She is adorable. I hope she will develop into a champion.
Don't you know her old video on YT? The video has millions of viewers for years.

Starr finished 7th overall (172.65) at 4CC with 2 new ISU personal best scores: FS (112.04) and Total. She is currently #43 on the ISU Season Best total scores list.

ISU Quick Quotes after her 4CC free skate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy9wrck6kGw
I felt good about the program, I made two mistakes [3T+3T< fall and step out on first 3Lo], but I kept pushing and I kept going and I can fight for everything.
(On singing the song for her the program today herself) I sing the song because I relate more to my program and the music, so singing it helps me bring more emotion out in my performance. When I skate to the song, it feels like my moment on the ice to shine. I want people to remember me by how emotional I skate and they can feel the emotion in the program.

Starr's quick quotes after her SP (60.61, just shy of her ISU PB): video is linked in post #15 above
It was really fun. I think I probably could have done a better toe-toe (triple-triple combination) but I’m happy with what I put out today.
(on saving the combination) I just had to tell myself to get over to the right side and don’t go back to the left side, because you have a chance of popping it or falling. I just had to make sure I readjusted myself before I did my second triple toe. My goal is to skate my best and to place, who doesn’t want to place.
(on singing the music for her Free Skating) I sing half of the song and Whitney Houston sings the other half. I thought that if I sing it I would have more of a relation to the song. (on choosing not to go to Junior Worlds) I just kind of wanted to stick to senior. Junior Worlds is a great competition, but I just wanted to keep going to senior internationals.

Updating six months later...

Starr will make her Grand Prix debut at Skate America, Oct. 19-21, 2018, in Everett, Washington.
She will make her ISU Challenger Series debut at the Asian Open FS Trophy, August 3-5, in Bangkok, Thailand.

She talked about last season and her 2018-19 season short program in this article from April: http://figureskatersonline.com/news/2018/04/20/starr-andrews-i-just-feel-so-free-when-i-skate/
Excerpt:
She revealed that she will be skating to “Summertime” (from Porgy and Bess by George and Ira Gershwin), performed by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Her short is choreographed by Delmore, who has choreographed all of her previous programs.
“He (Derrick) is a great choreographer,” Andrews said. “Choreographing with him is fun. You play around and then do something well, he is like, ‘Oh yeah, let’s put that in.’ He has an open mind when it comes to choreographing.”
(I caught a recent IG story of hers in which she mentioned she has "jungle"-themed free skate music.)

Starr performed her "Summertime" SP at the "Ice Dreams" show this past Friday in Elmsford, New York - 2 clips: https://www.instagram.com/p/BlP8TMrndRx/?taken-by=michlmint & https://www.instagram.com/p/BlQ-ib0j0Dm/?taken-by=michlmint

She also visited and spoke with girls from Figure Skating in Harlem while she was in the NY area: https://www.instagram.com/p/BlJFdjblaMB/?taken-by=figureskatinginharlem

Does anyone know when Starr will next be competing? We haven’t seen her since Peggy Fleming Trophy on July 16/17, where she got 6th place (4th among the women).

I don’t see her listed for any of the big August competitions, such as Cranberry. 🤔

Starr has received her ISU Challenger Series assignment - Autumn Classic International in Pierrefonds, Quebec, Sept. 16-18, 2021.

She had a good showing at Skate San Francisco this weekend, scoring 185.78 total (27 points higher than her previous high at LA Open). :)
65.10 in SP (3T+3Tq, 2A, 3Lo & all level 4s): https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/nonqual_results/2021/30051/SEGM013.html
120.68 in FS (landed 5 clean triples through 3F): https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/nonqual_results/2021/30051/SEGM014.html

Starr's debut of her "At Last" SP back in May is still her highest scoring (66.38) perfomance of the summer - Hurd Video uploaded a good quality video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxR-hPNvQu4

Next up: Champs Camp in Nashville later this week (due to her GP assignment to the Internationaux de France, Nov. 19-21 in Grenoble).

That’s Starr singing “At Last” for her SP. Wow! Just as she did with the Whitney Houston a few years ago. I’m curious now if she’s done that other times, such as her “Black Like Me” exhibition a year ago?

Sylvia...has Starr skated either a SP or LP recently with 3Lz (cleanly landed, fully rotated)? Did not want to have to scan thru old protocols to see if she has. To be truly competitive, she will need the 3 Lz.

@B.Cooper, no, she hasn't included the 3Lz lately (last time was 2019 NHK Trophy FS when she fell on 3Lz< with an edge call). I'm pretty sure her primary coach, Derrick Delmore, knows what's strategically smart to include in her programs. :) For example, I believe she was looking to upgrade her SP combo to 3F+3T in the summer, but has since gone back to 3T+3T due to better consistency on that combo in both her SP and FS, as well as repeating the 3Lo in her FS.

I'm not expecting Starr to add the 3A in competition, but she has been practicing the jump recently: https://www.instagram.com/p/CTpxktxDu27/

All the best to Starr this weekend at Autumn Classic International! She's arrived in Montreal (Pierrefonds) and competes tomorrow afternoon and Friday evening.

If you think about it, Starr has had an amazingly copious and successful skating career. I'd love to see her do an exho to Whip My Hair today! lol
