What kinds of sporting events have you been to? And what are your special memories?

Tennis is my favorite to go to, particularly the US Open. I prefer going to early rounds because, if the matches on the show court are snoozers, there’s other matches you can watch. Plus there’s bougie food and lots of shopping.

Have been to a lot of Bills games although not as often since they’ve gotten good, as tickets are harder to get

Used to go to a lot of College Basketball for work. Not anymore. I did enjoy the train rides back from the UConn and Syracuse games because, for some reason, I always end up sitting next to some old school journalist talking my ear off about Laetner, Rex Chapman and coach k etc

I’ve gone to Mets games because I know season ticket holders. Baseball games are really more for the vibes: nice summer day eating hot dogs and drinking beer and chatting with friends.

The first skating competition I ever went to was 2009 TEB and the OD in itself was worth the price of admission. Zoe Blanc in a delightful headdress skating to Breton music! Rubleva in all the fabric that she should have worn nine months earlier! Someone with magenta boot covers, Brent Bommentre in a costume that really should have gotten him in trouble for cultural appropriation, three consecutive trashy country dances, and then V/M making it clear that they will be winning the OGM.

(sadly, Blanc ditched the epic headdress later in the season; footage from the French Masters survives)

Outside of skating, last year I finally made it to an Atlanta Braves game after years of fandom. It was in Houston, so not the full experience, but they won! And also I was rewarded by my niece singing several songs of her own composition about the game on the ride back from the ballpark. It was everything I could have asked for.

Some fun memories:
2003 Worlds, after the free dance, Ben Agosto skated right over to me and gave me a big hug! Thanked me for my support. I had front row seats, but didn’t expect that. He was so nice, as was Tanith, who hugged the person next to me.

2006 Olympics, sitting with families of competitors at parallel giant slalom. Somehow, we were right in the middle of a bunch of different families who knew each other. They were so excited and so proud.

2002 US Open Bethpage, Mark O’Meara walking over to comment on how muddy my shoes were. It rained a lot. He was laughing that I was still there after a rain delay with soaking muddy feet. Well, it was the US Open. And Tiger Woods won.

Forgot to mention, I worked a concession stand for CBS Sports at 2 US Open Tennis tournaments in the 1980s. We were over staffed so we got to take turns watching matches. Not the semis/finals though. Fun to get paid to watch a tennis major.

I started attending skating events in 1999, when bus passes were not such a point of discussion -easily gotten. Many Nationals, three Worlds, several Grand Prix and 2 Grand Prix Finals.
I was on the bus with Tanith's parents and they were nice.

Adam Rippon as a Novice skater sat next me and told me one day he would be famous.

A skater who when he heard I was from Omaha jumped off the elevator and asked me if I knew Bright Eyes, and was just flabbergasted to hear me say that I worked with the lead singer's grandfather.

The year I was staying in the skaters hotel, Johnny Weir was in the same elevator. I was just gabbing away and we got off on the same floor, then we turned the corner to the same hallway. He got a little freaked out - but my room was just several rooms away from his. I think he thought I was a crazed fan.

Kind of a similar story when Todd Eldredge - he was sitting in the same restaurant and I told him how much I enjoyed his skating.

Lately it's been Chiefs football games and seeing Patrick do the behind the back pass the first time he did it. The pro volleyball teams. A couple of Royals baseball games, a Chicago Cubs game. A few College World Series game and Big Ten Tournament. took our grandson to a pro soccer game with Christian Pulisic playing.

Skating trips seem a bit selfish to me these days, so we do the football games, volleyball games, soccer games, baseball games because they are a "we" activities and I don't feel guilty at spending so many $00000 for a me trip.

Im very fortunate

I forgot the Olympic Trials - we've gone to 2 swimming trials, for two of the olympics (Michael Phelps, Katie l, Lilly, Caleb, Ryan, etc) - one session front row (splashing and all)

and curling Olympic trials

college basketball games

Some others- In 2014, I attended both the 18 inning MLB Nationals Giants playoff game and the 6 period Capitals Rangers playoff game. Paid for 1 game and got 2!

Figure Skating - I have been to 8 Worlds (1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2016, 2024 & 2025) plus multiple Skate Americas (2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2017, 2022) One Skate Canada (2018) One Grand Prix Final (2010 Quebec City - first time seeing Jason Brown live); US Nationals (2008, 2014, 2015), Junior Grand Prix (2009 & 2019 - both in Lake Placid)

I live in CT - 2 hr drive to Boston - go almost every year to Evening of Championship Skating @ Harvard and Skating Clubs of Boston Ice Chips show.

Women's College Basketball (USA - 1995 - Uconn ladies winning first national championship in Minneapolis, proud grad, saw game with 2 of brothers that both also went to UConn)

Gymnastics - US Nationals - can't remember what year -in Hartford I remember they gave medals out to like 14th place.

MLBaseball - fall 1983 - LA Dodger playoff game

Regular season games
Been to NBA - Celtics in Hartford (would play a few games a year back in the 1970s);
NHL - Hartford Whalers
MLB - Mets, Twins, Dodger, Oakland, San Francisco, Anaheim, Baltimore

Big 10 College Sports Football - U of Minnesota and Michigan State University; Mens Basketball and Mens Hockey - U of Minnesota
Note on Univ of Minnesota games - I was working for Internal Audit at the University of- and the department had season tickets for the 3 biggies - mens - football, basketball and hockey. One of us would go to a game (have a 2nd tix to bring a friend) - stand around the entrances to make sure tickets were checked and at the break - go to room where an inventory of the programs was done as part of the audit function. I took my nephew who was 8-10 years old when I took - he loved it. The free tickets cost me a lot in food for him- but I'm an auntie - and can't say no. One time he could not go and i took a friend - and I got my food bought for me.

Figure skating - cant even list them all.
Short track at Sochi Olympics - it was the same venue.
Long track at Sochi Olympics - got a free ticket, went to see, was bored out of my skin and left after an hour
Gymnastics - a gp and Euroepans when they were 20mins from home. Didn't understand what I was watching, but it was lovely. Saw Yana Kudriavtseva.

Will not list all the amateur events I participated (inline skating and inline marathons) but most of them while fun to participate I don't believe anyone would care to watch (I wouldn't)

Skate Israel while they were happening were the most fun - we knew most of the skaters and their parents; the first TEB in 2004 when we got to meet all the crazy FSUers, Sochi Olympics - goes without saying. The best competition to participate was the inline speed skating in 2008 where I got a bronze - only 3 women showed up and the 4th got the route wrong
