I was having trouble figuring out where the number next to each skater's name was coming from. I couldn't find it on any ISU list, but I think finally figured it out and I figured I'd post it for the benefit of others who might have been as in the dark as I was...

See the rankings results in the leftmost column (source - SkatingScores.com):

I'm a newish fan, so please forgive my ignorances...

Do Olympic scores play any role in the rankings used for GP selection? I thought it was ISU events only (excluding B-level events of course). So if, for example, Torgashev boosts his score at the Olympics above the #25 man on this list, but doesn't improve upon his score at Worlds, then he would still likely need to rely on a host assignment?

Edit: I think I just realized the answer myself, yes Olympics do count. I remember the leftmost column of the ISU ranking charts were reserved for both the ISU World Championship Event AND Olympics. If this forum allowed people to delete their own posts, I would.

Don't worry!

There are several ways for skaters to earn 1 or 2 GP assignments. Any singles skater who finishes in the Top 12 at Worlds is guaranteed 2 GPs the following season. In the post-Olympic season, if skaters who finished top 12 retire then lower ranked skaters are bumped up until there are 12 skaters with 2 guaranteed GPs (for dance and pairs it's Top 10 at Worlds). Skaters who are in the Top 24 in either the SB or WS are guaranteed 1 GP. Usually skaters who are in the Top 24 on BOTH will get 2 GPs on the initial assignments list - for pairs & sometimes ice dance, there might not be enough slots to go around though, so it's not a definite guarantee you'll get 2, but you'll certainly get 1.

Once all of the skaters/teams guaranteed 2 and 1 assignment as well as the host spots are allocated, the host feds go through and select any skaters on the SB Top 75 list to invite. Usually, though not always, they start at the top of the list. Someone like Torgashev, who comes from one of the GP host feds, would almost certainly, if he was sitting somewhere between 25-36 on the SB list get at least 1 GP assignment somewhere, possibly 2 on the initial assignment list but there's no guarantee.
