They should keep this season’s programs for the Olys…

Usually I want skaters to do new programs each season, but several programs this season are so good I’d like to see them kept for the Olys:

Alysa Liu- short program

Smart and Dieck - Dune

Turkkila and Versluis - Tango

Thoughts?
No
No
maybe

Alysa's SP is such a specific piece, speaking to one specific point in her life's journey and why she returned to skating. Now, she's at a much different point in her journey and that SP won't have the same impact.

SmaDie & TurkVers - I'm never much a fan of ice dancers repeating a FD from season to season. Again, it goes to impact and while I consider both programs to be among the very best of this season, they'll feel stale by next fall. Move on.

I think there are some circumstances where a skater or team should keep a program: if they can't afford a new one, or if injury, illness, their rink being blown up into oblivion prevented it from getting more than a couple of outings the season prior, from having the time to start the season with a new one, or from having to uproot themselves.

If I really love a program, I generally fear that they won't be able to come up with the same magic the next year, but that's no reason for a skater/team to hang onto a program.

I agree with the first two posters

Alysa Liu- short program

Smart and Dieck - Dune (although as a newer team, they probably should try something different to show what they’re capable of)

Turkkila and Versluis - Tango

Wakaba - free

Mikhail S - free

Isabeau - SP

That’s true as well, I think just because we loved it so much we want to see it again.

Definitely want to see Isabeau's short again!
As much as I love Dune I think S/D need another amazing and creative program for the Olympics.

I do not think repeating Dune would serve S/D. It was a huge hit this year, repeating it can only make it start to look stale. It’s also only their second FD ever as a team, so I feel like repeating looks even worse somehow.

In general, I don’t think repeating a program that has already been skated to its fullest potential works out very often.

Ilia should keep his SP. He clearly loves the music and each time performed it to the max. The Oly audience is bigger than the figure skating audience, so it will be new to a lot of people, and it's the kind of program that could be a viral hit.

I love both of Ilia and Alysa's programs and would be happy if each kept their programs respectively. If all goes well for Alysa, I can totally see an Olympic audience rocking out to her "MacArthur's Park Suite". For Ilia, I feel that an Olympic audience will be especially looking out for his Quads, especially that Quad Axel! All that being said, I think that both kiddos are ready for something new and fresh for the Olympic season!

As for Amber, I love her SP but I'm hoping for something totally new and amazing for her FS!

I LOVE Isabeau's "Breakfast At Tiffany's" SP, I hope that she keeps it! I also personally loved her Snake program, but I understand why she dropped it. I also hope that she can come up with an awesome FS!

Speaking of snakes 🐍 I hope that Chock & Bates come up with something as awesome or even better than their amazing Snake program!

I think it's so difficult to recapture the magic of a program for a second time around. As stated before, Alysa's programs were magical in the moment especially at Nats (SP) and Worlds (FS). Same idea for Smart/Diaz, Ilia, etc. I don't think you can recreate the same experience with a different time, audience, and vibe. It looses the magic.

What are some examples of recycled programs that were just as fresh and amazing the 2nd time around?

Perhaps, although imo Alysa's programs were also magical in their third and final outing at WTT, in spite of the fact that the audience's energy was nothing like at Worlds! And they haven't been seen by an Olympic audience!

They were in the same year. Most casual fans - watch worlds maybe and Olympics - may not see them as magical the second year

Well, Nathan's "Rocket Man" was, but he hadn't been doing it for two seasons straight. He dropped it for a while and then brought it back, so that probably helped it not feel stale.

He didn't even start the season off with "Rocket Man" - he went back to it at Nats, IIRC.

This was the case with Chock/Bates’ snake program. It was fresh and exciting the first season but for the second, not so much. I will always be sorry they weren’t able to perform it at 2020 Worlds in Montreal.

The greatest figure skater of all time kept the short program “just for you” from 2002 and then again in 2003 and it was just as magical the second time.

She could’ve use the short program “No one gives up on love” for a second time as well. I would’ve loved it.

The second greatest figure skater of all time used “East of Eden” from 2000 through 2002, got better every time she performed it.
She used it in the 1994, 1996, 1999, 2001, and 2002 seasons actually.

Eta- Debbie, she started the season off with East of Eden in 2002 but eventually did go back to another repeat program in Rach!

I agree. Even at Worlds, to be honest, I don't think that was her best performance of the music. She looked too happy for that music.

As for Amber, I love her SP

I'd be happy never to hear that music again.

I would be happy if Isabeau did keep her short program not just because I love the program but mostly because she didn't compete with it very much due to not using it at the beginning of the season and then being out for several months.

the best version IMHO was the gala at 1996 worlds after she won her first world title.

Isabeau's short program
Kevin's short program (it likely won't happen since he already plans on bringing back Bolero - 2 "old" programs might not have a good effect)
Rino's long program
