Today: https://rss.com/podcasts/figure-skating-runthrough/1725843/
In this episode we talk about everything that happened this past weekend at Skate Canada. Topics include: Backless suits, Michael Buble bringing you to tears, and Dance, Dance, Revolution.

ETA - on Rino Matsuike (starting at 32:40):
Adam: "You know who gave me an adrenaline rush? Rino Matsuike. ...
Ashley: "Edges!"
Adam: "Jumps! ... now of all the gorgeous things that she did during this event, the one thing that I cannot get out of my mind is in her footwork sequence where she just holds that right outside edge till the bitter end before she does the loop [at the beginning of this clip here: https://x.com/fsgays/status/1850306715201282330]. ... In my mind, Rino for me absolutely should be making waves and making a claim to be a world champion this year. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind."

They're not wrong! Watching the FS live the 2 skaters that made the biggest impression on me were Rino Matsuike and Alysa Liu. In the SP, it was Kaiya Ruiter, Madeline Schizas and Kaori Sakamoto.

So I had never listened to this podcast before today but took time to take in their two most recent episodes. (When I should have been doing other things around the house. :slinkaway )

Oh dear... It was like the snarky PBP threads here of FSU but hosted by two people with ADHD who can't even finish a topic they start talking about. Somewhat entertaining but way too chaotic.

Not Olympic Champion Sarah Hughes is usually the one who keeps them on topic so without her they definitely ramble a lot more. I hope she'll be able to come back soon.

Wagner's response has to be the funniest thing she's ever said  As if we didn't spend her career between 2010-18 pretending she had skating skills on par with the top women of the time, or her spins and her steps sequences weren't just plain mediocre (or "bullshit ugly" as she says), or that her UR jumps didn't end up being ignored, despite competing in CoP. Or does she think the names she doesn't want to name didn't compete under CoP and weren't overscored despite competing in CoP?

What's that about her being self-aware again?

Rippon brings up a better point, but otoh, have they watched the skating under CoP since 2014? His own skating was cluttered. It's hardly some very recent phenomenon. But hey, maybe there's a push from the American quarters to get that unleveled spin happen.

They continue on this subject in their review of Finlandia
I think they're right about the current rules pushing skaters to overload their programs with point-grabbing transitions rather than choreography inspired by the music. For a while - in the 2010s to maybe 2018 - I did enjoy seeing skaters focusing on the skill and art of edging and footwork.

Maybe that's why I've been enjoying the dance event more than ever. These are the competitors with the best skating skills. And I don't stress out, anticipating falls and "fails" they way I do in the pairs and singles.

Of course the elements require so many frills and nonsense that they don't often match the music. How many skaters are doing an illusion or that dumb sliding movement out of a spin and it actually makes choreographic sense?

I have said this so many times, but I think a big key to a lot of these problems is getting rid of the leveled step sequence in the free skates. The skaters do them in whichever pattern they'd like now, and it's often just a redux of whatever they did in the short. They spend about 30-45 seconds on these sequences to gain a whole 4-5 points.

Take that away, there's more time for 'choreography' but I am fearful of what the ISU technical committees for pairs and singles' skating would come up with if they go the way of choreographic elements. We see in dance that it's mostly just a way to hand out massive GOE to top skaters, and some of the choreographic elements as a whole are just meh.

IJS has also (through several different rule changes since the inception) almost guaranteed the jump - jump - jump - jump - spin - step seq - (now exactly 2:00 minute mark) jump - jump - jump - choreo seq - spin - spin layout for singles skaters. What Zagitova did (and pulled off most of the time) is so much more exciting than that fill in the elements template. In adding choreo elements in dance, they've almost guaranteed skaters are going to change rhythm and energy to some remix to do their character step at the end of the program, too.

I’ve really been enjoying Ashley and Adam’s frank conversations as of late. Particularly on the episode after the election where they were both in bad moods and really shared how they feel about spin levels and spin exits, choreographic sequences, etc. They always give me some good laughs too, which is much appreciated in these trying times. Former high level skaters opinions are always the most interesting to me. So keep those frank opinions coming Ashley and Adam! Hopefully you can have some influence on the sport!! The ISU should be listening. And I’d like to have Ashley work with Sarah Everhardt on performance and expression as she suggested. 😁

I've fallen behind in listening - the NHK Trophy episode (Nov. 13) is titled "Billy Eliot Updated His Whereabouts." ;)

In this episode [Nov. 20, 2024] we talk about everything that happened at the 5th Grand Prix event of the series, The Finlandia Trophy. While Sarah remains MIA, Adam continues to complain about leveled elements and creative and new ways to talk about Irish dancing. Ashley reminds everyone to stop flipping their sister's skirt and to get off their knees.

I think the podcast is absolutely hilarious. I enjoy every second of it and feel deprived on the weeks when they don't post one. I do miss not-Olympic-champion Sarah Hughes though. I assume they're trying to work things out with NBC. She gets a lot of her inside info due to her work for NBC so they might feel it's a conflict of interest. I hope they can sort it out soon, whatever the problem is.

Ashley on X just now: "We talk about Amy Adams a lot but not at all about Irish step dancing so it’s a fun episode" (Nov. 27):
In this episode we cover the final event of the 2024/25 Grand Prix series, Cup of China. Other important topics include being shot into space, holding space, and being an actress living in space.

She works for NBC. I think it likely has to do with her contract there. They kind of alluded to it when they said something to the effect of “maybe she can do it if it’s a trivia episode”. Hopefully they can at least have her as a guest. Sucks to lost her because of NBC.

I listened to the whole thing. Adam had me until he ughhhh'ed Danny's mentioning of LEGO in his hobbies. :angryfire

Also, going through the site as he did (and getting the same 'entries not yet published' when clicking back), I noticed Lagha and I have basically the exact same hobbies. He could've pulled my Instagram headline straight into his own bio. 👌

Well, right off the bat, first time listening to one of their podcasts, and I'm unimpressed with Adam. I realize he was a mere toddler when the interwebz came into existence, but questioning why the ISU's domain is a .org instead of a .com is just ridiculous and dumb. Even Google AI knows the answer to that.

Dec. 11th episode is titled "Tillamook Cheese, LaToya Jackson, and Resetting Broken Bones":
In this episode; Adam confuses the Tillamook Dairy Company with Tilikum, the captive male orca who spent most of his life at SeaWorld Orlando, Ashley begs the question, "Where is the grit?", and they remind everyone that LaToya Jackson is always watching.
Adam: "Ashley, can I let you in on a secret? I don't think anyone who listens to this podcast comes for the factual information."
Ashley: "Well not anymore - not since we lost Sarah!"

Definitely disagree with their take on the interaction between Amber and the Japanese skaters in the Kiss and Cry.

I don't know why Ashley Wagner has an opinion on interactions between Amber Glenn and the top Japanese skaters - she never beat Japanese skaters at anything major, apart from Boston worlds, where she also hilariously beat them on skating skills and transitions. I'm guessing no one took her seriously when she tried to portray her "tough bitch" "competitive" persona or whatever the heck she believes she's arguing for, because lol.
