just catching up on the rd's that i missed last week and i have to say that yoshida/morita are my new favorite team. i don't think i saw any of 4cc this year (i can't remember, i've had so many distractions going on irl lately) so i went back an caught their r&j fd there. they seem to have all the qualities i love not just in ice dance but in figure skating in general. and great presence on the ice, too, from both of them. what a dream for me!

There are a couple of songs that I would add to the list.

1) Walking on Broken Glass (Annie Lenox). This would be IMO so good for Piper and Paul. Just imagine Paul playing John Malkovich through a whole RD while Piper is the desperate but powerful and wronged woman.

2) My Love is Your Love (Whitney Houston). My early clubbing days always met a remix of this song. The lyrics are meaningful to so many people.
I wonder if Fear/Gibson could pull it off but it really has that tinge of defiance and sadness to it. Maybe no one right now can portray “we weren’t supposed to be but are thriving.”

They Might Be Giants. That is all. :cheer: :cheer2:
For fans of “They Might Be Giants” and also rabbits.

This video has cracked DH and I up for years.

It has become a family joke to look at each other randomly and say “Well, they MIGHT be giants.”

If anyone (Piper and Paul, please!) skates to this song by The Arrogant Worms, it would immediately become my favorite RD ever, no matter what they did with it...

If someone does C+C Music Factory or Ace of Base, it's gonna be like reliving an elementary/middle school dance for me.
That’s just made me think of ‘Saturday Night’ by Whigfield. I don’t know if it was the same outside the UK but I bet every kid or teenager in 1994 knew the Saturday Night dance :scream: We actually did it in PE class at school which was the only reason I knew it

Top of the Pops video

Thankfully I don’t think it would work in ice dance!

I was :wuzrobbed that Yoshida/Morita didn't make it into the FD. I hope they can qualify in Beijing.
I think they will. Japan getting qualified in the 4th discipline will open up more quota spots for other countries in the Team Event. Plus, as far as YoMori have come in just the past year, it seems crazy to imagine them not continuing to make crazy improvement & nab one of the 4 spots available in Beijing.

yes, their fd from 4cc was very well done. shame they didn't get to show it off one last time. if they don't make the olys fd, i that they'll at least get a chance to skate their fd in the team event in milano. looking forward to seeing what they create with cathy and scott next year!

I know it's posted somewhere, but I'm woefully behind after Boston. Can someone re-answer or direct me to the correct place to look for the answers to the following:

1. How many dance spots are available for the Olympics at next fall's qualifying event? (Mom thought three, but she wasn't certain).

2. Where was the cut-off for countries now guaranteed berths? (Mom thought 19th and that Canada's #3 would need to compete; but again, she wasn't certain).

3. So do we need to keep our eyes pealed for extra Russian teams showing up in the fall to compete for Georgia, or can we dismiss that possibility unless an athlete has already competed for Georgia?

1) Four
2) Australia is the Free Dance team not qualified for Olympics. Cut off was South Korea (18th) but Canadian third spot is qualified for Olympics because Gilles/Poirier + Lajoie/Lagha makes 2+7=9. Lower than 13. And the rules only say that the third team must be qualified in the Free Dance for the third spot to be automatically assigned from Worlds. So Australia must go to the Qualifying Event.

Does Georgia currently have a 2nd dance team? If not, they would need to give back the extra spot and it would be up for grabs at the OQE, right? So potentially 5 spots open?

YoMori will get to skate their FD again at WTT in a few weeks.

1. How many dance spots are available for the Olympics at next fall's qualifying event? (Mom thought three, but she wasn't certain).
There are 23 spots total for ID in Milano-Cortina - 4 more to be awarded at the OQE.
2. Where was the cut-off for countries now guaranteed berths? (Mom thought 19th and that Canada's #3 would need to compete; but again, she wasn't certain).
There were 19 spots awarded, however just making the FD or placing 19th is not enough because countries that qualified multiple spots are awarded theirs first, then the solitary spots, plus the federation can only qualify as many spots as they had teams compete in the FD in Boston. Therefore:

USA - 1st + 5th + 9th = 6 pts & all 3 teams in the FD = 3 spots
CAN - 2nd + 7th + 20th = 9 pts & all 3 teams in the FD = 3 spots
GBR - 3rd + 17th = 20 pts & 2 teams in the FD = 2 spots
ITA - 4th + 23rd = 4 pts & 1 team in the FD = 1 spot + 1 OQE entry
ESP - 6th = 6 pts & 1 team in the FD = 1 spot + 1 OQE entry
FRA - 8th + 15th = 23 pts & 2 teams in the FD = 2 spots
GEO - 10th = 10 pts & 1 team in the FD = 1 spot + 1 OQE entry
FIN - 11th + 14th = 25 pts & 2 teams in the FD = 2 spots
CZE - 12th & 13th = 25 pts & 2 teams in the FD = 2 spots
17 spots awarded at this point, so...

GER - 16th = 1 spot
KOR - 18th = 1 spot

The unlucky team that made the FD but did not qualify an Olympic spot is AUS.
3. So do we need to keep our eyes pealed for extra Russian teams showing up in the fall to compete for Georgia, or can we dismiss that possibility unless an athlete has already competed for Georgia?
We may need to keep our eyes pealed for that when the RusFed has their next Exec Council meeting in May, but Georgia's Maria Kazakova has a new partner, as does Masha Alieva, so either one of those new teams could wind up competing at the OQE.

No, that's not how it works. All DavSmo's 10th place finish did was secure GEO one spot plus the right to send a 2nd, different team, to the OQE to try for the 4 remaining spots - 1 of which will certainly have Reed/Ambrulevicius' name on it and 1 of which is going to have the Unnamed Russian AIN on it probably, so really only 2 spots up for grabs realistically.

Yes, most likely 2 spots up for grabs and I have a hard time imagining Tali/Lafornara won't take one of them.

Any combo of Triangle Man, Minimum Wage and Istanbul would be hilarious.

Thanks, I keep forgetting the spots needing to be confirmed count as part of the total. But is there a team from Georgia who would be competing, at least at the moment?

Possibly, if Maria Kazakova's new partner can get his release from Bosnia - they wouldn't release him when he tried to skate with a different partner for ITA about a year ago.

I imagine they'll be in the running for it (providing Italy sends them). I'm not leaping to any conclusions at this time about where they would finish.

Haha that makes sense :D It’s quite typical Europop, the only thing that made it memorable was the crappy dance which had nothing to do with the artist - no one knew who made the dance up, but she embraced it when it got famous! We all grumbled about it but as soon as it came on at a party everyone would do the dance anyway

Hopefully the skaters will choose much better 90’s music anyway!

Yes, I'm holding my breath to see what sort of scores Tali/Lafornara get wherever they make their senior debut ahead of the OQE. Their SB as juniors is a few points below Harris/Chan's SB, but much higher than Yoshida/Morita & Reitan/Majorov, and then Ignateva/Szemko are right in that mix also, as well as Pucherova/Lysak. But, I don't know that I trust the accuracy of HarChan, ReiMaj or PuchLys' scores since they're from Tallinn Trophy (HarChan) and Nepela Memorial (ReiMaj & PuchLys), which we all know had some high scores for a lot of teams that weren't matched at any of their other competitions.

Nineties ideas keep popping into my head

Jamiroquai - Canned Heat seems obvious, bonus points if a team includes any Napoleon Dynamite moves
Rent - Has there been a good Rent program? Maybe better as a FD, but I reckon the Fun Finns are Broadway buffs and they could pull it off.
Celine Dion - So many options, in English & French, some better than others (no Titanic, please)
Jock Jams - Let's get ready to rumble + Whoomp there it is + You're unbelievable  This could definitely go wrong and end up like Chock/Bates dancing through the decades RD this season, but if the right team does it campy with cheerleading costumes and whatnot (again, Fun Finns?), it could work.

The second Finnish team does not have their citizenship completely sorted as of yet... so there may be a possibility of one extra spot being available, but we will have to wait and see. Are there any other lower level Finnish teams that might take the spot?

With the Australian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish teams fighting for the two remaining spots means it's going to be pretty difficult for any other teams to qualify over them.

The Cypriots did an amazing Jock Jams/cheerleader FD a couple seasons ago.
