I was a skater for 15 odd years and yet I feel like I'm being gaslighted every time I read/am told that the two teams have equal skating skills and that the result comes down to artistic preference. IMO V/M just are the better technicians. P/C have better balance??? Scott's centre is the best of everyone's- just look at his spread eagle position, it's never weighted towards one side even with Tessa standing on his thighs. He does an even more incredible job supporting her in lifts when you consider that he's actually shorter than the ideal for T. They've got a greater run of blade, never force an edge from a flat, they're the most in sync team out there, they're as fast as P/C but manage that with fewer crossovers, less side by side skating and less two-footedness, they skate closer together, their patterns are huge, both Tessa and Scott always fully extend their lines (Gabby has her dodgy knees and limited turnout, and while Guillaume's flexibility is exquisite, sometimes I find he breaks the line a bit at the waist- it was mentioned elsewhere but they seemed oddly piked at Euros. I know he was ill, so maybe just an off day. Still got 81, which mystified me), and they change directions and holds more seamlessly than anyone.
I like the French. I think they're very good skaters. I think their style is very pretty to watch. I have issues with their lack of versatility, but don't think that has any bearing on who should win any given competition. I know what the scores say, I just am not understanding how the teams are being judged on a par in terms of skating skills. I've got to be missing something.
