Team events at the previous Olympics

I think these would be the results of previous Olympics

Sarajevo

Gold- U.S. U.S had a great overall team this year. I dont think anyone could beat them.
Silver- Soviet Union
Bronze- East Germany. East Germany would have a pretty good team with Witt, Baess & Theirbach in pairs, and decent entries in all the events. Canada could also win the bronze though.

Calgary

Gold- Canada. As I broke down Canada not only could but most likely beats the Soviet Union for gold this year.
Silver- Soviet Union
Bronze- U.S

Albertville

Gold- Unified Team
Silver- U.S
Bronze- Canada

Lillehammer

Gold- Russia or Canada; slight edge to Russia
Bronze- France or Ukraine

Nagano

Gold- Russia easily
Silver- U.S, they had a solid overall team, super strong in ladies, strong men, strong pairs, decent dance
Bronze- Canada or France; this one could either way, it depends if the Canada lady can hold up and skate decently and if Stojko is able to compete. If Stojko is out likely France.

Salt Lake City

Gold- Russia easily
Silver- U.S also pretty easily
Bronze- Canada very likely

This would probably be the most uncompetitive year for the team event, there probably be no real battle for any placing

Turin

Gold- Russia easily
Silver- U.S
Bronze- Canada

U.S vs Canada, U.S is stronger in ladies, a bit stronger in dance, equal in men, equal in pairs.

Vancouver

Gold- Canada or U.S, slight edge to Canada
Silver- U.S
Bronze- Russia

I guess all 3 teams have a shot at gold though.

Great analysis.

In Nagano, I doubt Stojko would have been able to skate four programs with his injury. Our women were weak. We didn’t qualify a woman but we would be send Angela Derochie for the Team Event. So, bronze would go to France probably

Yes, if Stojko is out bronze for Canada in Nagano is out the window. And it is very unlikely with his injury Stojko bothers with the Team Event and uses the flu as an excuse to save himself for the individual. Even with him they could very well have lost to France.

The perception of many Soviet/Russia wins easily at every Games is wrong though. I think it is very likely U.S beats them in 84, Canada in 88, and while Russia might win in 94 it isnt impossible Canada beats them there. 98 onwards yes Russia dominates the Team Event minus 2010 where they have only an outside shot at beating both Canada and the U.S for gold.

Poor Slutskaya, she would have 2 or 3 Oly Golds now. Heck does Slutskaya now win the 2002 and 2006 individual golds with less pressure already being an Olympic Champion now too? She might even be a 4 or 5 time Olympic Gold medalist now.

Does anyone remember when Isabelle Brasseur injured her rib? That miss have impacted if B&E could skate

I dont remember exactly when she injured it but the injury was nowhere near as bad at the Olympics as Worlds. While I am sure there was some pain you didnt even notice it in their performances. I think they would have done both programs in the Team Event simply knowing we had no other strong pair. If they were willing to skate at Worlds mainly to try and keep Canada's spots for next year, with a way worse injury, I dont see them WDing from the Team Event in Lillehammer. They also would know they had a way better shot of a Team Gold than an individual gold with the pros back anyway.

In 2002, I can see Butyrskaya getting the ax in the Team Event. She was nowhere near where she was in 1998 when she was pretty consistent. I don’t think Russia would want to tire B&S too much. Russia would lose some points in Pairs but enough to hurt them, as T&T would probably finish second. China would be unlikely to move on after the SP. I doubt Canada would sub in for Sale&Pelletier.

Can countries send extra for the Team Event other than sending one to compete if a country doesn’t qualify a berth individually?

No, I mean if, for example, a country only qualified or skater would the be allowed a second just for the Team Event?
Oh, sorry. No, countries can not send additional athletes if they haven't qualified multiple entries for the separate discipline.

Yeah I think you are right. And while her short programs were generally strong (stronger than her actual SLC SP), Irinas SP is also her real strength.
