Aaaaaaaaand Linichuk has just posted that Angelopol was, again, dismissed from her group for the usual reasons ("repeatedly interrupting the training process).
On IG I keep getting suggested videos of ‘V&V’ even though both have of course moved on with new partners long ago (I believe several in Valeriy’s case). All the gushing comments are about how wonderful they were together, how if they stayed together they would have gone on to amazing success, how great their chemistry was, etc.

Much to my annoyance I find myself agreeing with it. :wall:

Their fans are mostly from TikTok and I do have an opinion on the TikTok generation...

They were good, yes, and I found myself rooting for them and got the same feeling I got from I/K back in the days, but well...he seems to be a nutcase.

The men's event is going to be very interesting. Petrosian is so far ahead of the rest of the women's field, and pairs is always between two teams. I like both teams and always hope they both skate their best and make it a real competition. I think B/K have the better SP and M/G the better FS so it's always who handles their nerves the best (my money is always on Mishina in that regard. The woman has no nerves).

Elena Ilinykh posted something rather cryptic on IG the other day.

All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost.

What is going on with her and her husband? Is he out of favor with Putin now?

Have we considered she’s potentially posting a poem she likes?

I dunno if I want to assume that quoting Lord of the rings has to mean something about Putin

It may or may not have anything to do with her feelings about Putin, but her husband is uprooting their family again because of him. On the other hand, she may be fine with it, since they've moved around quite a bit.

He’s obviously still very privileged if he can just decide to leave

Probably people who suck up dictators asses end up at a point where they overestimate what the dictator thinks of them, I expect the same to happen to a lot of Trump loyalists.

Anyway, here are some recent rumors from R-sport and TASS:

Alina Gorbacheva is rumored to be the first alternative for Olympic qualification (with Adelia Petrosian being #1)
Khudaberdieva/Bazin are retiring after this season, and will not be considered for Beijing qualification / Olympics nominations. So far, Federation leans towards Stepanova/Bukin as #1 and #2 is between Khavronina/Narizhy and Kaganovskaya/Nekrasov

And, all is not well between Boikova/Kovlaski. She two footed the landing on the SBS jump and put a hand down on the throw. She, in tears, said it was all his fault. That he rushed the take off on the SBS jump and she couldn't sync with him. It's not cool to blame your partner on camera, especially when you have a history of nerves in big competitions. They ended up in 4th place at the end of the SP. I get nerves are high with Olympic spots on the line, but there's a time and a place. They had issues at Nationals as well, so one has to wonder what's going on between them. It's a pity, because their SP is really good and IMHO may be one of the best programs Danny G has ever choreographed

Mishina, OTOH, is rock solid every time she takes the ice. Every time. She reminds me of Savchenko in that you can plan to just enjoy the skate and not worry. It's a long time until the Olympics and there's all kinds of uncetainity in the world, but I will cry if Moskvina can coach another team to an OGM in her mid-80s.

Khudaberdieva :( She was such a talent when she first came on the scene in juniors; for a brief while it seemed like she was on a trajectory to be one of the big stars of the sport.

Tell that to Kozlovskii. He has been the one blaming her publicly in the mixed zone for the whole season, including today. She asked him in K&C not to blame her for everything again, and he did exactly the opposite in the interview after (she didn't go to the press, and even journalists seem to support her decision).
She has always been emotional and nervous, but it's not an excuse for his recent behavior.

Didn’t she have a very pronounced eating disorder or am I mixing her up with someone else?

Ah. No, it is not. I think their partnership is coming to an end and that's really too bad. I think they actually improved last year at Tutberidze's rink with Trankov's guidance and their programs this year were really good. They started off so strong I really thought they'd pass M/G, but as the season progressed, the errors started happening. I really hate that for both of them.

The men were, well what they were. Gumennik had the best skate of his season (I think he has the best Dune program of all the men skating to the music this season), Mark K is either on or not and he was on today. Semenenko was better and Dikidzhe was nervous and tentative. Lutfullin is my secret favorite, but there's no chance the RuFed would send him to China. And, sadly Aliev just couldn't do it. I expect retirement is in his future. Makar, you just never know. He skated very well today. I've always had a soft spot for Samsonov since he was a junior, then he missed a couple of seasons due to injury, but has done pretty well this season, but today was a disaster skate for him. The top 6 will have a very interesting free skate. Men is the one discipline where there is the greatest amoung of unknown quality.

I'd guess that Dikidzhi will be, at worst, the alternate - there's no way that the RusFed, the ROC, the ISU and the IOC wouldn't want him potentially in Milano-Cortina with his own 4A. That duel with Ilia is just too good to pass up.

Bukin wasn't allowed to compete in 2018 due to mysterious (to the public) reasons. I think choosing them would be risky.

Yes. She also got married to a 30-something TV producer at 18 and he featured highly sexualized photos of her on his Instagram. I don't know if one thing had anything to do with the other, but her weight was noticeably different the year she got married and she could barely hold her herself up in lifts or make it through a program without looking like she'd pass out. She publicly admitted that she had a problem and seems to be doing better now. Not sure if she's still married to that guy. Just speculation, but she looked like she felt pressure to be his sexy trophy wife and it messed with her self image. All that on top of the usual skater issues.
