DMX had a signature rasp to his voice. He delivered his lines with a desperate aggression that propelled his debut album It's Dark and Hell Is Hot to multi-platinum level sales. He followed that up with a string of chart-topping albums that included songs like "Party Up (Up In Here)." His rise in music also gave way to acting, in movies such as Belly, Romeo Must Die, and Cradle 2 the Grave.

On April 2, Mr. Simmons had a heart attack at his home in White Plains. In the days that followed, representatives for the rapper said he was in a coma and on life support “in a vegetative state.” Outside of the hospital, family and friends gathered with hundreds of fans, playing DMX’s music aloud and praying, holding up their arms in the shape of an X.

The two articles talk about his stage command and his troubled life and issues with crime and drug use, that he was exposed to when he was a young teen.

So sad. I was hoping he'd somehow pull through, but as the week went on, it wasn't looking good.

...And Then There Was X was definitely one of my most-played CDs during high school to my early twenties (along with The Blueprint, Aaliyah's red album, Ray of Light, The Writing's on the Wall, Californication...off the top of my head).

The news of DMX's death hit me a little harder than I was expecting, to be honest. It's fascinating how I'm still so connected to the music and the artists during those formative years in my life.

I think I missed this thread when it was originally posted (it just showed up at the bottom of my screen after reading the Betty White thread).

I always thought that Party Up (In Here) was the kind of song you couldn't help but want to move to. What a life he lead. I couldn't even finish reading the "Early Life" section of his wikipedia page. :(
