Me too. I really wish he'd wait at least 8 months to a year before he starts trying to skate again. I know that is not ideal for him, but he did just have major back surgery barely 2 months ago. He really should not push himself. The shows will always be there, his back won't if he continues to put stress on it.

He doesn't rush!! He was on the ice because of the Japanese documentary. He is in the Maldives...He plays golf with his son http://instagram.com/p/nkd2lojqzI/#

He and Mishin said he will be on ice in mide- June.

Well, I kinda work here, so unless I get fired or quit, I'm here to stay.

Maybe you could find somewhere more to your tastes elsewhere.

I was thinking of Vash01 at the time! I don't have much of a life, but I seem to remember that name for some reason going back to the old ESPN message board!

Interesting! Now that you mention it, I do remember a troll named Fiero on that board- that was so long ago!

Another year older last week! It gets old in so many ways; don't you think? I miss those days of an era long gone and less likely with no sustained and repetative tv coverage for us! I actually missed most of what was telecast of Worlds last month! Tape delaying such a major event is criminal and we can only hope changes are made sometime soon! The Olympics were a nice change of pace; could watch live at 4 am, then again in prime time! That's the way it should be all the time! :swoon:

(recently uploaded - Plushenko's 1st victory at the Grand Prix, 16 y.o.) 1998 Skate Canada International, Free Skate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PacPvQVU1k4

he beat Stojko

Evgeni was intimidating the first year out there at 15! I loved that Jarre program off "Chronology!" Went out and bought 4 or 5 of his disks, but none lived up to that one; maybe due to the lack of Evgeni interpreting the music through jumps and spins! IIRC, he was leading the SP at Worlds earlier that year! Got his foot caught on his quad landing, stubbornly went after the rink for another one falling before salvaging bronze! That would have been so embarrassing to Yagudin and Eldridge at the time; one coming and the other going! Thanks for the video!

This just proved what I thought; the men have come a long way with quads and 3-axels routine; well except for Chan! The women still are struggling in comparison! You have a few great jumpers, but they've regressed; no 3-axel by Mao all year and no woman has tried a quad in years! I know you can make due with this point system, but I do find it amusing how much credit Evgeni got from the commentators during his programs; esp. the SP at Canadian! "The best 3A/3T combo" at the time? Wow!

What is he WEARING?!?!?!? :yikes:

Much preferred the earlier costume for this LP.

He was sixteen. Incredible.

He skated this program for 2 years and wore so many versions; silver, gold, short sleeves, long sleeves, etc.! I really loved this skate; so age appropriate! Skaters like Irina Slutskaya or Mao Asada so often start with music too heavy & dramatic! This Jarre number was different, fun, serious, and emphasized Evgeni's strength in some way!

This is great to hear. I'm glad he's taking it easy and not pushing himself too quickly back to the ice.

I actually like this costume, much better than the black an gold monstrosity he wore at Worlds. This is one of my least favorite programs by Plushy, but I still fully appreciate his incredible skating here. Loved how the commentator (was it Peter Carruthers?), called it that Plushenko was going to be a World Champion someday. He was that Peter and so much more. I don't think anyone anticipated the legend this kid would become.

I remember Plushenko showing up as a kid and landing absolutely unbelievable jumps. I always preferred him to Yagudin and thought he had the potential to be the best male figure skater in history.

But I do hope he manges to retire with grace and not become a laughingstock. I actually think Mishin has gone senile and Plushenko is being pushed to continue skating by him and his awful wife. He needs to run away from those two :scream:

I'll have to take your word for that! I wasn't aware Evgeni was being manipulated or encouraged to stay "in the game" past his prime! So far he's won top honors, so I'm not sure about your "laughingstock" comment!

If you read the comments on some of the Russian sites, they are certainly less than kind and I think the general view of the Russian public is that he should retire.

Having said that, I admire him for his incredible physical and mental strength - to be able to continue for so many years despite injuries. But sometimes enough is enough. I hope his more recent performances won't mar the memories of Plushenko's divine skates in his younger years.

Normally I'm all for the old guard stepping down, but when the new bloods aren't getting the job done, you bring back the vets again and again; Slutskaya in '06, Kwan after '03, Bonaly in '98, Witt in '94 according to some around here, and of course Plushenko this year!

I think Plushy is more than capable of making his own decisions. Yes, Yana is a strong woman; I have mixed feelings about her myself, but I do believe they are equal partners and I don't think she could persuade him to do anything he doesn't want to do, nor do I think she would try to do so if it meant sacrificing his physical health. Maybe I'm wrong and she's a complete shrew, but I'd like to think he chose better than that, particularly the second time around.

I guess we'll find out in a few weeks if he is fit to continue or not. I'm sure it's very hard to give up something that has always been the center of your life...the routine, the challenge, the accolades. Of course he can keep skating in shows for years to come, but I think he's rather addicted to the adrenalin rush of competing.

I read Russian sites. And I read them before Sochi, too. You don't believe them totally. If you read he has many lover, supporter too. Yana is a Russian celebrity and Plushy is also, not only a sportsman. Yana is a strong business woman who isn't too sympathetic for many Russians. They say she needs to do like the ordinary women. But Plushy said he does not have cook or maid. ( Plushy loves to cook, she used to cook sometimes, not Yana)
They have a lots of money. Many Russians simply envy of their money. When they merried in the whole Russian media wrote that is only a PR event. A Japanese TV paid for some videos about the celebration more than 1 million Euros. Some Russian were so indignant because of it! Well, they have a beautiful son they love each other very much. Plushy was incredible popular in Russia before Sochi and he is popular even today. But the Russian media was very cruel with him after Sochi and who didn't like him before Sochi wrote many hateful comments. They wrote the surgery wasn't real etc. So Plushenko was in the media more than 18 000 times in february!!!! No one comes close to him!!! His withdrawal was the main theme in the media not the Russian hockey team's shameful appearance. Can you imagine that???

So believe me they live their life on a very good way, they live their life as they wish..

But I agree with those Russians who think he needs to retire. And I really believe he won't compete.

Yeah... I know Yana is certainly infamous in Russia given who her previous husband was... and how all that ended.

I felt terribly sorry for Plushenko after Sochi and I thought he was pushed to perform over and above his physical abilities and not necessarily for the right reasons. He could have remained a hero in everyone's eyes and retired like Yagudin, performing in popular TV shows etc, but now he is being forced to continue to justify his withdrawal in Sochi. Yana and Mishin will make him an invalid.

Plushenko is/was more popular as Yagudin and Yagudin isn't a good man in every Russians eyes. He is not married with Tatiana etc. Plushy had TV shows too, but he chose the figure skating, he loves the figure skating. Alexei said not once he doesn't like the new figure skating, and doesn't watch!!! This isn't the same level when he competed. But he said the opposite , too...

Plushy had advertisements with Mercedes cars, a very famous Swiss watch, the Russian lottery etc. He is among the "Russian elite" people for many years. That list's first man is Putin, and Plushy is the only one athlete. I will be curious of the voting in this year.

Have you seen this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeLycSwlZlQ Plushy and Yana are very rich. This isn't make them more popular.

Plushenko is not a fool or a weakling to be manipulated into doing what he does not really want to do. Skating and competing is his passion. Chances are he wants to find out what his limits are. He did, in the individual competition in Sochi, and he wisely backed out of the competition.

Yana's Russian haters say poor Plushenko he is in a witch's hands, she will kill him, etc.. But what I see, Plushy is happy with her, and she helps and motivates him. Born a wonderfully clever child. Many Russians still do not believeeven today that their relationship is real !! Yana is wise and knows what to do because Plushy has own will-power. I believe who wants to bring up a boy from her ex-husband's previous marriage, can not be a bad person . Andrei is not a common child with Baturin, Yana is his foster-mother.
Plushy's first wife was very jealous plus she wanted to that Plushy end his skating after Turin and immediately start work in his father's enterprise. Maria's father has hotels in Russia.

That would have been a wise decision :)

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She wanted to Plushy completely stop the skating and never perform on any shows. She wanted to Plushy become a business man. If you say this, you're not a fan of Plushy just a reader of this thread. Since 2006 Plushy has many unforgettable performances in the shows. His passion is the skating, he can't live without it. If you love someone, you want to be happy ..or you are very selfish.
If you haven't seen this I recommend you this video..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVGRZLmIEIw Impressive quotes of Evgeni Plushenko

The world of figure skating would be poorer without him.

Not to mention his silver in Vancouver and gold in Sochi. Many great skaters would be happy just these results. for example Kurt Browning or Brian Joubert..
