Former Olympic Biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier of Germany, 31, was severely injured by a falling rock on Laila Peak in Pakistan yesterday.

Helicopter pilots scouted the area today, but conditions prevented it from landing, her entourage wrote in a press release. Reports state that she is “at least seriously injured.”

"Now there is sad certainty: former German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier has died in a mountain accident in the Karakorum Mountains in Pakistan. This was announced by her management on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old was climbing the 6,069-meter-high Laila Peak with a rope partner in alpine style when she was hit by falling rocks. The accident occurred on Monday.

In a statement, her management said that the 31-year-old was presumed to have been dead for two days. The recovery of her body was not possible due to the “currently prevailing difficult conditions with rockfall and a change in weather on Laila Peak.”

A search team set out on Wednesday morning after the search was called off on Tuesday evening due to darkness. “It was determined that recovery by helicopter is not possible,” said Areeb Ahmed Mukhtar, a senior Pakistani official: “The conditions at the altitude where she was injured are extremely difficult.”"

Her wish was to leave her body on the mountain in such a case,” the management also wrote.
