Former Olympic Biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier of Germany, 31, was severely injured by a falling rock on Laila Peak in Pakistan yesterday.

Helicopter pilots scouted the area today, but conditions prevented it from landing, her entourage wrote in a press release. Reports state that she is “at least seriously injured.”

What a tragedy!
I keep all my fingers crossed, that she will be rescued alive. Although it's not looking good.

For those who understand German: There is a documentary about her life after biathlon. She climbed Ama Dablam last year, part of docu, great footage, sunny weather, wonderful Himalayas

She won 2 gold medals in 2018 in Pyeongchang

She is a volunteer in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain rescue service and has also been working as a mountain and ski guide since 2023

German websites:

"Now there is sad certainty: former German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier has died in a mountain accident in the Karakorum Mountains in Pakistan. This was announced by her management on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old was climbing the 6,069-meter-high Laila Peak with a rope partner in alpine style when she was hit by falling rocks. The accident occurred on Monday.

In a statement, her management said that the 31-year-old was presumed to have been dead for two days. The recovery of her body was not possible due to the “currently prevailing difficult conditions with rockfall and a change in weather on Laila Peak.”

A search team set out on Wednesday morning after the search was called off on Tuesday evening due to darkness. “It was determined that recovery by helicopter is not possible,” said Areeb Ahmed Mukhtar, a senior Pakistani official: “The conditions at the altitude where she was injured are extremely difficult.”"

according to FAZ:
“It was Laura Dahlmeier's express and written wish that in a case like this, no one should risk their life to rescue her. Her wish was to leave her body on the mountain in such a case,” the management also wrote. This was also in line with the wishes of her relatives, “who also expressly ask that Laura's last wish be respected.”

So sad. For me there is still a tiny bit hope as no rescue team has reached her yet. I know realistically the sad news is true, but...

Here's some info on the rescue attempt

Oh, I'm sorry for this update. What a tragedy.

Yes, a tragedy. In Germany almost everyone knows her name and face, biathlon fan or not. Or in my case mountaineering enthusiast (at a much lower level)

Here a report in English newspaper

German tabloid Bild, which sometimes does very decent reporting, explains, why there will be no further rescue attempt: She didn't want anybody to risk his or her life.

the message of her management team (in German)
