Ode to the beautiful game... (Soccer)

Barcelona won the Champions League earlier this evening. They beat Juventus Turin 3:1, with a very late goal in extra time to make it perfect.

Some more gems from the FIFA scandal today:

  • It has today emerged that shamed ex FIFA ExCo member Jack Warner allegedly double crossed the corrupt Moroccan 2010 World Cup bid team. Warner reportedly received a bribe of $1 million to back the Moroccan bid, only to take the money before accepting a higher bribe from the South African campaign.
  • Those involved in Egypt's doomed campaign to host the 2010 World Cup however claim that Warner was in fact attempting to triple cross all three of the countries who were competing to host the World Cup. A former Egyptian government minister claims that Warner was touting seven World Cup selection votes for the price of $7 million, $1 million each. The Egyptian World Cup bid did not receive a single vote during the final vote.
  • It has also been claimed that Morocco, in fact, won more votes than South Africa, who went on to host the 2010 competition, but FIFA manipulated the results of the secret ballot. Ismail Bhamjee, a Fifa executive committee member, was secretly taped whilst claiming the process was corrupt.
  • A newspaper in South Africa claims it has a 2007 email that shows Fifa president Sepp Blatter and then-South African President Thabo Mbeki held "discussions" over the alleged payment of $10 million from FIFA into the bank account of Warner

Well John Oliver has purchased air time on the tv stations in Trinidad and Tobago Tuesday night and I cannot wait to hear what he is going to say to the citizens about Warner. First Warner claims innocence then he claims if he is going down he is not going alone and is threatening to spill the beans. Do you think Warner will be alive this time next year?

Should a new thread be started for the Women's World Cup? If someone wants to, go right ahead!

Some updates on the FIFA scandal:

1) Jerome Valcke has acknowledged making the $10m payment but denied wrong doing.
2) Bidding in the 2026 WC is in hold
3) Swiss police has seized IT data from FIFA
4) John Oliver had a paid message played on Trinidad TV and addressed to Jack Warner
5) Zico wants the top job at FIFA
6) The government of the Cayman Islands have retaliated against a local newspaper critical of it's response to the FIFA scandal by pulling it's ads from the newspaper. The publisher of that newspaper and his wife have since left the island for their own protection.

FIFA's communications & Public Relations director Walter De Gregorio has resigned with immediate effect after "Who's driving" joke. I thought his joke was very funny. :D

Sepp Blatter, the director of communications and the general secretary are all sitting in a car – who is driving?” Schawinski: “The answer is?” De Gregorio: “The police.

The best part was how well the U.S. team kept attacking, right up past the 80th minute! They didn't hold back at all.

I was unfortunately not able to find a TV channel showing the game in the Czech Republic and had to resort to following the twitter feed. However, that is exactly how they played the Netherlands match that I saw live. They looked like they were getting owned for much of the first half, managed to equalize against the run of play, and then came out with a much stronger second half effort. As in the Netherlands, they didn't seem content to settle for a draw against a top team and went for the win. I hope they keep that hunger and vitality when the veterans rejoin. I will add that I have never been a huge fan of Michael Bradley, but I have to hand it to him for his leadership during this week. He really seemed to settle the young guys and spark their morale when they went down.

This is the world's game. I think if Blatter died tomorrow it would continue. What is he thinking?

Blatter is too full of himself to care what the world thinks, and those who benefits the most from his regime wants nothing to change.
