Nathan Chen thinks it's hard being a straight male figure skater in a "homosexual-dominated sport"

I was crestfallen to learn that our sport's undefeated champion endorses toxic and demeaning stereotypes of male figure skaters. The interview was initially removed from Youtube, and only after it was discovered that a Twitter user had already downloaded and reposted the interview did Nathan offer a scripted and performative apology.

Unfortunately, his response in the interview was very much unscripted and therefore seemingly authentic. And it aligns with the subtle, but persistent macho affectations he presents on and off the ice (exaggerated masculine body language and a strained, artificially deep voice during interviews). Even today's average straight NFL player can deliver a more thoughtful response to having a gay teammate. How sad is it for this to be Nathan's opinion despite apparently being surrounded by open and closeted gay competitors, teammates, coaches, and judges?

One Twitter user reacted: "Basically Nathan Chen had the opportunity to use his in-sport privilege to: support queer athletes as an ally, talk about how figure skating is for everyone, discuss the types of expression rewarded at competition... Instead he: told us he was straight, equated feminine with queer and implied they were both negative, implied he is oppressed by queerness in the sport... AND ignored Olympians who said in the last month they couldn't come out while competing as they were worried about the impact on scores when their job as skaters it to tell heterosexual love stories."

We already have a discussion about this in the Nathan Chen thread.

Not many people here agree with your 100% bad faith take on this issue although many of us acknowledged that his words could be hurtful. We believe his apology to be sincere. Many, though, are suspicious of this sort of editorializing (use of words like "performative" which is such a cliche word now that I wonder if 18-21-year-olds have just learned it in their Freshman sociology classes and ran with it without further thought) that lacks nuance, empathy, understanding, and seems to be motivated by skating-related reasons. By "skating-related" reasons, we mean stan wars. Most of us on this forum aren't into juvenile games you guys play on Twitter.
