Definintely NOT on that particular Persuasion. I love A League of their Own. I like off-beat sports movies too---I find Men With Brooms and Mystery, Alaska a comfort when I need comfort.

I loved this show, and was in the middle of watching it a few years ago when it disappeared from Netflix in Canada. But I just googled it and it looks like it's now available on a different (free!) streaming service, so now I know what I'm watching when I get home from work tonight!

Since it's that time of year - "The Holiday". Absolutely ludicrous plot which is part of the fun!

There's also "Muriel's Wedding" and how can you go wrong with Rachel Griffiths, Toni Collette and ABBA?

PJ Hogan also directed "My Best Friend's Wedding" which is another classic.

My sewing group last night watched Priscilla Queen of the Desert. And last year we watched Strictly Ballroom. Both classic Australian movies.

The first time I saw Strictly Ballroom, I didn’t care for it much. Then I realized I just had to embrace the antics, and now I love it.

It really is one of those movies as time goes on you realise how good it is.

I know someone who was an extra in it. He commented that Paul Mercurio who plays Scott was a lovely person to work with and it was a fun movie to be involved in.

Paul Mercurio is now a politician here in Australia for the state of Victoria. He used to be a TV presenter and did a travel show which I always enjoyed. One of the more genuine people.

I went with friends to see it (none of us had any clue or expectations). Nobody was sure what to make of it. I started cracking up and laughed so hard. Such a great satire.

Not a movie but the remake of All Creatures Great and Small on PBS is my mental comfort food.

I love the books the TV show is based on and I reread them every few years. I have several books I reread that are my mental comfort food.

Michael Keaton comedies from the 80's and 90's. Especially right when he was becoming a 'name' at the cusp of hitting it big. Sure, the movie plots might be a little ridiculous and they ain't Shakespeare, but he's great in them, and they are funny. Johnny Dangerously, Night Shift, Gung Ho, Mr. Mom, The Dream Team. Multiplicity is funny as he plays 4 different versions of himself (again, ridiculous premise, but still funny watching how he plays each character). One of my favorite Michael Keaton movies is The Paper (comedy/drama).

Michael Keaton was, and is, one of the best comedic actors of all time. He's right up there with Gene Wilder and Tom Hanks, IMO.

The original "Lord of the Rings" trilogy movies remain among my all-time favorites. They captured the look and feel of Middle Earth so very, very well. Ultimate "comfort food" movies for me, because they take me away from the world for a while. Perfect for when I'm not feeling well.

Not a sick day but the city is a sheet of ice now being topped by snow. NOT going out...I was thinking of fun, quirky sports movies today: Maybe "Men With Brooms" or "Mystery, Alaska." Of course there is always the NFL.

When you have a cold, or a backache or recovering from surgery what kind of movies do you like to watch? I don't want to feel any pressure. Maybe something from childhood or something that is positive. I think the last time I was ill I watched "Sleepless in Seattle." What about you?

Oddly, movies often stress me out, unless it is something I have already seen and know that it won’t create stress. Even then, I may choose something else, like just lying down, heat, etc. May be even watch a little tv, because it is a lot shorter than a movie.

I think I understand. My folks worked and when I was sick in grade school the babysitter would watch game shows. Now I always associate "The Price is Right" with illness and avoid it. Oddly enough though planes were a comfort. My bed was surrounded by windows and, while the airport was far away, our part of town had Beech, Boeing, Cessna, Learjet, the Airforce base with their B1 bombers and uber fast Jayhawk squadron. There was always something happening in the sky and I liked watching the sky.

I was going to start a new thread called "what movie should I watch tonight by streaming, i.e., movies no longer in theater. I saw this thread from awhile back and it looks like it will fit the bill!!

Last night I watcher Carolina Caroline. It was ok but pretty much a take off of Bonnie and Clyde (which was a good movie IMO).

I like David Fincher but I had never seen "The Game." What a wild ride. Thank God for sites like Tubi.

Mel Brooks movies are my go-to when I want to laugh (like really, really laugh hard). Never fails. The best of the best is "Young Frankenstein," followed closely by "Blazing Saddles" and "Spaceballs." Also love "The Producers" (I think I laughed so hard I almost stopped breathing the first time I heard "Springtime for Hitler") and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights."

BTW, Legally Blonde is another really funny movie if you have not seen it. I can relate to it because I went to UCLA for 2 years, was in a sorority, etc. Legally Blonde 2 is ok too but not as good as the original IMHO.

A couple more classic movie favorites:

Singin' in the Rain: Gene Kelly at the height of his charm, plus Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor — and a truly scene-stealing performance from Jean Hagen as the thoroughly hateful Lena. One of the best movie musicals, with a couple of the most iconic dance scenes ever filmed.

Vacation from Marriage (aka Perfect Strangers): Electric chemistry between the leads, Deborah Kerr and Robert Donat, though it didn't start out that way; their love story had a rather unique evolution over the course of the movie. Bonus: A very young Glynis Johns in a dynamic supporting role. Her character was a real firecracker.
