Minna-Maaria Antikainen Cheer thread

The most accurate and sensitive portrayal of a Japanese Geisha by a white woman since Rollergirl's Geisha Dreams.

Unironically amazing

It's comical that the two most viral moments from figure skating this season are a transgendered person falling down in a gala and a skater who can't skate internationally because of a war while going through a doping hearing doing tiktok meme dances in a gala. Oh, and that the great hope(or hopes) to bring back "real womens" skating have just a weird shared corporate instagram account with 44K instagram followers. All in a season where we see quad axels done for the first time.

I mean, good for Antikainen she gets to do what she loves and is living her dream...but I think it was not the best idea to have her skate at the opening ceremony of the Europeans. The video has gone viral and most people are making fun of her.
I feel like she was invited to skate there only for the sake of being "different" and not for her skills.
Now she's become a meme.

Watch out for an upcoming story in Newsweek.

Also, the motto of the Espoo Europeans opening ceremony was "Skating is for everyone", and Minna-Maaria was personally invited to skate there by the FFSA managing director herself. The slogan for the whole event was "Just be you". It's an important message about inclusion, and I can't help wondering how it would have been received across the east border of Finland. :-/

Not even the East border. People are using this to demean trans folks in the US as well and misstating facts like that she’s a “national” competitor for Finland making people think Minna-Maria competed at Euros under the women category for Finland and only got in due to their perceived trans identify; as far as I know I don’t know how Minna-Maria identifies.

Here's an instagram story from Pogorilaya(who did a gala to Conchita Wurst's Fly like a Phoenix where she "transformed" to wearing a suit to a dress IIRC). I don't know Russian(so I can't tell about accuracy or tone), but OCR+Google Translate comes up with "But this is a masterpiece. The way all our coaches see us"

Note: the Western Standard was cofounded by Canada's far right a$$hole Ezra Levant, so the article was intended to mock Minna-Maaria but now I admire Antikainen even more:cheer2:

What is there to admire? Seriously?
No skill, just being trans is something to admire these days?
