Maxim Naumov Cheer Thread

Is it just me or does this sound like retirement? New goal and taking over the academy... 🤔
It wouldn't surprise me, tbh. He's achieved the goal of being an Olympian, and he's in his mid-20s already, with several much-younger skaters with sky-high potential (and serious technical goods) coming up behind him. He's never struck me as a "skate until I drop" type, either. I can understand why, in that position, he might want to wrap up his career on a high note.

Max spoke at the airport after returning home to Boston today (Feb. 24) with Emily & Spencer:

“To be able to bring this dream into fruition and into reality is something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” Naumov said. “It’s something I can pass down to my children and tell them how special this moment is, but I felt their presence during the entirety of the games. So I hope that they’re proud.”

I've posted more clips in this GSD thread, including the link to a NBC Boston interview that includes Max:

I just checked and didn't see Robert Samuels' poignant feature article on Max linked in this thread. Samuels posted on X twice on Jan. 31 about his article:
"For six months, I've traveled the world as figure skaters tried to make the Olympics. I'm so thankful to Maxim Naumov for his vulnerability that taught us so much about how to handle grief."
"Reporters get nervous. Whenever I’d get the chance to interview Maxim Naumov, I’d get unusually scared that I would say too much or ask the wrong thing in a delicate situation. But each time, he reflected on the past year with candor and intimacy"

Here's a new gift link that I received last night (should work for 2 weeks; free registration via email required to read):

Jan. 31, 2026: How Maxim Naumov learned to embrace his grief to earn a spot at the Olympics

I get the sense (just from brief interviews during Olys) that Maxim feels a LOT of responsibility toward his parents' skating school and his pupils. He had to juggle the school and his own training while grieving his parents and might be very happy to be able to focus his energies primarily on the skating school.

That's how I see it too. He's ready to move on to the next phase now that he's achieved the dream he and his parents set their sights on so long ago.

Just checked and Max's Feb. 10th WIRED video - Olympian Maxim Naumov Answers Figure Skating Questions - was never posted here (20 mins.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxffedwlmEo

Norwood Community Media's recap of Ice Chips 2026 includes a clip from an interview with Max, starting at the 2:30 min. mark (video of the full interview is supposed to be shared in the future):

To me this hardly explains it all... The absence from the Simsbury show I think is the first in his life. Taking part in a reality show would keep him away from the Tomorrow's Champions program for months. So I am really confused about this - if it turns out to be true. I hope this will not take him away from skating.

Well, according to this article from US Weekly with Shawn Johnson East, who was on the most recent season, the filming only takes a couple weeks.

Which, by the way, seems to be pretty typical of almost all reality competition shows save Big Brother. The Traitors takes less than 3 weeks to film.

It was reported last season that the appearance fee for that show is $100K (even if you don’t make it to the end). That could be life changing for whatever he decides to do moving forward. I watched the show last year for the first time. It can be inspirational, but they do dig into the contestants’ personal lives, which is can be kind of icky.

I googled the show's logistics. They film it for 14 days usually in May and it's goes on tv in september. If he is filming it right now it explains why he didn't skate for Scott Hamilton and the tv production company will ask him to keep it secret so better take a break from insta....

Also he has this development camp thing in thailand end of May and benoit Richauds summercamp starts in June so preparation for competitive skating is still possible if he decides to keep on skating.

I wouldn't hope too much about the continuation of his career... He stated clearly in the article below that he is taking a break from competitive sports:

While it's not beyond the realm of possibility that he could come back to competition, I wouldn't bet on it. That's not usually the way the story goes. And it's not like having his competitive career end on Olympic ice is a bad way to go out, when all's said and done. He achieved his dream of being an Olympian, and no one can ever take that away.

The thing is with the lack of depth in U.S. men going forward, Max would now have the opportunity for more international assignments. He didn’t get that for many years of his career. I certainly understand if his heart is not in it anymore or his body has had enough. But I think he would have more competitive opportunities if he did continue. And selfishly, I love his quality skating and would love to see him skate more.

Exactly what I think. He has such beautiful spins and they give more points now.
But Max kind of fell from the face of the earth. The tomorrows champions took part in a competition at the Skating club of Boston last week and Max was not there. At least not on any of the many pictures and videos. Nobody has any news apart from this ISU camp thing in thailand end of May... hopefully we will see him there

I love Naumov’s classical style and lines so I would not complain if he continued to skate but there’s something to be said for going out on a high note. I think it would be very hard for him to top the season he just had, so why not capitalize on the opportunities that surely must be before him now due to his exposure during the Olympics? I could easily see him as a motivational speaker - he’s articulate, relatable, and courageously open about the struggles that he faced after losing his parents yet crystal clear about how he nonetheless persevered. Whatever he chooses to do, I’ll sure he’ll be successful.
