I listened to the The Runthrough. I got the sense that Adam got a bit of a kick leaving the rink for the mall that day that Mariah was practicing the jumps that she wanted to do and doing more run-throughs than Adam seemed to want, though I suspect that, like Mariah, he was stressed about the upcoming Nationals and Olympics. It definitely was not the typical coach-student relationship. Their relationship is really sweet.
It seems like a lot of skaters have trouble making the transition from competitive skating and feel a need to find something else to drive them. Within months of retiring, Mariah (who previously didn't even like running) wasn't skating much but was running enough to win local races. And she really wants those medals.
