Love, Balls and Courting: Tennis V

I don't think it is the same emotional conditions. I think of YuNa and Mao (really the whole Japanese team) at the Olympics being stalked by the press, talk about crazy pressure. I have to think Serena was under that same type of scrutiny, plus the pressure elite athletes put on themselves.

The Grand Slam is an insane feat that very, very few have accomplished - for a reason. The pressure is crazy, and you need skill and a ton of luck. But, Serena had the best possible draw here: no top 10 players faced, she was playing a player she'd never lost a set to. I wanted to see her win this, but them's the breaks. She had it in her racket and failed, and that's it. Kudos to Roberta for not falling apart as many do when they face Serena. Serena's still one of the greatest ever.

It just goes to show you how truly great Stefi's achievement is.

i took my betterer shirt out of the museum case. then it rained. so i took it off. i hope i'm on the right side of any jinxing.

Finally this match started. But, the conditions are wetter and cooler and slower... should favour Novak. And so far it seems like Roger's serve isn't quite as accurate as it has been, so that will make it difficult for him. Hope I"m wrong... this is kind of like how flat he was at Wimbledon after his scintillating win over Murray in the semis.... dont' like the parallels.

So glad the might finally started. I thought we were in for another Monday final which I wouldn't be able to watch since it would probably be at 1pm California time.

The first set was weird, like both guys were a little tight and nervy, and Djokovic took that awful fall early. The second set was epic. The third set is really good so far too!

Really enjoyable match so far.

The umpire is sharp. Isn't Eva the umpire that better "look the other way" if she runs into Serena in the hall ? :)

Eurosport is amazing, the commentators are pro Federer and this crowd really dislikes Djokovic!

Congrats Novak :cheer2: :cheer2:
As a fan of both men, I am both :fragile: for Roger because how many more chances will he have, and delighted for Novak getting #10!
Some amazing play in thi match.

I had a really good feeling that Novak was going to win. I just could not see him losing to Roger twice(in a row) and losing in 3 straight finals.

I would say it is more like they are heavily for Roger(sentimental). I've only seen Novak really disliked by the NY crowd in 2008 US Open.

I remember watching that match and hearing the boos from the crowd. I have not heard such loud boos for a player until Nick Kryrios 2015 Roger's Cup.

Announced on 9/8

"After some good healthy discussion with Nick and his team, we have agreed on a plan to help him develop all aspects of his game and ensure a long and successful future in the sport," Masur said. "Next week's tie has come a bit too soon for him and is not in that plan."

The 22-year-old Tomic, after losing at Wimbledon, was not a part of Australia's 3-2 quarterfinal win over Kazakhstan after being suspended for his criticism of Tennis Australia and performance director Pat Rafter.

"The focus has been on helping Bernie understand the consequences of his actions and then assessing how serious he is about committing to a consistent effort to improve his behavior," Masur said.

"So far he has demonstrated a will to change and backed that up with his actions. But it is a long road, and he is now very acutely aware of the consequences of any future transgressions. He has been selected with this understanding in mind and, it is fair to say, very little room for error in the future."

The Australian roster is likely to be led by veteran Lleyton Hewitt, who lost to Tomic in the second round at the US Open. Sam Groth and Kokkinakis will join Hewitt and Tomic.

Problem is Nick does not give a frog's fat arse about Davis Cup. He's said it, plain and simple. Also, this sends the wrong message to Tomic too.

Tennis Australia is still enabling their "bad boys".

I haven't heard Serena Williams make any excuses. Just her fans.

Serena has not said much of anything(about the match outside of the 3 minute post conference). She has not mentioned it nor tennis on social media since 9/10 which is pretty telling.

She is still claiming she did not feel any pressure or stress which we all know is not the truth.

Congratulations to both men, Djokovic for GS #10 and Federer for getting to the finals of two GS's when he's 33/34 years old (and playing blissfully dominant tennis until he ran into someone who's simply even more amazing right now.) Hopefully the Fed can kick butt in the year-end championship.

Steffi was a great player but had Monica Seles not been stabbed by the crazy German fan of Steffi's, no way she would have completed the Grand Slam. Monica was beating her nearly every time at that point. I remember that Tennis became very boring at that point.

Happy to see Nole getting his #10. Here is to, hopefully, many more to come! :40beers:

We are lucky/spoiled to be living in such a fantastic era with multiple GOAT candidates going against each other.

I think it was just an unfortunate set of circumstances in terms of competition at that time in 1993-94, that were further magnified with Seles' absence.

Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport were still too young (as was Mary Pierce to a lesser extent).
The declines of Gabriela Sabatini, Jennifer Capriati (in her first career) and Martina Navratilova.
Anke Huber, Jana Novotna, Mary Joe Fernandez, Conchita Martinez not really competitive on a regular basis.
