Vets said the marsupial was put down because his burns were not improving.
"[Our] number one goal is animal welfare, so it was on those grounds that this decision was made," said Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.
...
The 14-year-old koala had significant burns to its chest, feet and other parts of its body, vets said.
The hospital has treated dozens of koalas injured from the bushfires which have burnt through more than a million hectares in New South Wales alone.

Those fires have been devastating, so many losing everything :(

Way too many fires in certain places and far too much water in others. And I think it will only get worse. Hopefully the little koala was kept comfortable as possible.

There have been devastating fires in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Victoria already in the last few weeks. The Northern Territory is coming to monsoon season, and it's nearly cyclone season for Queensland, so I imagine it won't be too long before we have the contradictory disasters - flooding up north, and fire down south. On some occasions we have even had fire, flood and snow, all at the same time.

There is presently a reciprocal arrangement in place with California, whereby many of our aircraft are sent to California during their summer which is our winter, and return during our summer. But now, with the fire seasons overlapping, I think it is time to revisit that arrangement. It certainly did not go down well when the general public learned that so many of our aircraft were still in California while our firefighters struggled here.

Where I live has been spared fire, but we're choking on dust, blown in on unusually strong and constant winds from the drought-stricken rural west. They said we might get rain yesterday. It rained for all of a minute. But we had a brief thunderstorm, and with thunderstorm comes lightning, so no doubt more is on fire.

My brother has been north three times in three weeks. He is exhausted, as are many of the firefighters. And it is not even summer yet...

Horrifying to hear about the Australian bushfires. My sister lives near Brisbane and fortunately she is safe. However, some of the fires northwest of Sydney have merged into a “mega blaze” and cannot be put out as its too big

Sadly, it’s being reported that around 2000 koalas have now been killed by the fires.

These satellite images highlight just how devastating these fire are. The fires can clearly be seen from space.

Just hope this situation can be brought under control soon. Keep safe those of you who live in the affected areas!

Glad your sister is safe @Maofan7
Thanks Buzz

In my sisters last email she said: “Whats annoying is that a lot of the fires are started by kids and its not rained properly for nearly 5years....we get a bit more rain on the coast but we still don't get enough. They dry lightning storms, so the lightning also starts the fires as well.”

Its really terrible that the situation is being made worse by arsonists!

Dr Chris Brown has called on the Gov’t to take action to protect the Koala population.

The bushfires are now affecting Western Australia as temperatures top 41c

The crises continues in Eastern Australia

The dry thunderstorm mentioned in my last post did indeed spark another fire. There are now three to the east of my city, and we have choked on smoke every day since. But I can hardly complain, we still have it better than the brave souls fighting.

The NSW Fires Near Me site shows 115 fires. In NSW. Alone.

38 burn in Victoria.

Approximately 70 in Queensland.

10 in South Australia.

19 across Western Australia.

Even in the Northern Territory, where it is wet season, 4 are burning.

16 in Tasmania.

Adding up those numbers is chilling. Only the ACT is not on fire, but the smoke is horrendous and the bushland that surrounds and is wound through the city is a tinderbox.

And our absolute piece of shit of a worthless son of a bitch Prime Minister is off in Hawaii on his Christmas Holidays. While our country burns. Get back here you pathetic bastard...

Sydney New Years Eve Fireworks To Go Ahead

The timing on this was interesting because not 24 hours before the ACT - that is, the capital - had announced that theirs were cancelled.

Several Sydney suburbs have also cancelled theirs.

A volunteer firefighter was killed earlier today when the truck they were in rolled. Two more in hospital.

All of the East Gippsland area of Victoria has been evacuated as the situation deteriorates down there. Sydney and Canberra are choking on smoke. Just before Christmas Canberra's air quality was rated worse than Beijing's!

And worst of all, thunderstorms are predicted for tomorrow. The cruelty of it all.
