I just watched her program because it sounded like a disaster- and nope, she blew the combo but everything else was fantastic and her movement across the ice has has never looked better. I'm not a fan of this song but this program works so well -I found it extremely moving.

Pre-season Kaori is always an adventure. Gotta just believe in the process lol

What happened to Mone’s new SP to Sakura? I was so happy to be done with Last Dance, which never seemed to suit her that well.
I think I heard there were music rights issues? Can’t remember where I heard it - maybe Jackie Wong’s podcast?

It looked like something happened to Wakaba at the end of her program. When the music ended she kind of collapsed on the ice and was VERY slow getting up. She moved very slowly out of the rink and looked like she was in pain. She didnt go to Kiss n Cry to hear her scores but left the arena - Probably to see a doctor. Hope it's nothing serious.

Congratulations to medalists,
Gold: Mone Chiba
Silver: Kaori Sakamoto
Bronze: Saki Miyake

Kaori's FS to Edith Piaf Hymn d'Amour was fantastic, marred only by one popped jump.
Saki fell on her 3Ax attempt, but managed to hold everything else together.
Mone with SP cushion won this convincingly with Romeo and Juliet FS.
Special kudos to Rinka Watanabe for Pewter, and nailing 3Ax+3T in her Jin FS.

Does anyone know why Sonja Hilmer’s three jump combo had the salchows invalidated? I’ve only ever seen the * for Zayaking but that’s not the case here.

Very disappointing season opener for Bradie Tennell. She will have to do much better to put herself in consideration for the Olympics. As of now I don’t think her body of work is sufficient to be named to the team even with bronze or silver at Nationals. She needs at least a GP medal and probably two to put herself in contention against a World Champion, a GPF Champion fifth in the world, and a recent World silver medalist who has been no worse than fourth in three appearances.

Hated hated hated Sakamoto’s short program and hope she dumps it. Beautiful skating but cheesy choreography and music. Interesting that she has gone back to her old jump layout in the free skate, repeating the toe and flip but with two triple-triples in the second half.

Disaster movie Edith Piaf might not have been my first choice, but as usual, Kaori sells it to the back row. And hair, makeup, and dress on point! What a stunning young woman she is.

"Disaster movie Edith Piaf" might be one of the more memorable quotes I see all season. I have yet to watch this competition but now I'm psyched for it. At least she never gives us the kind of "Disney princess" vibe I'm used to seeing from a lot of Japanese skaters.
