Kevin Reynolds' music copyright problem (is there a precedent for this?)

Maybe they didn't know that Yuzuru had to go through all that to get permission. I certainly didn't and I saw someone else's comment (here? somewhere else?) that they assumed Yuzuru went through all that because he was just being respectful, not that he had to.

I’m not sure Yuzuru would’ve known to go through this process with Hisaishi on his own. I believe in the linked interview with his music editor - who actually does a lot of the editing for Japanese skaters - he had known of Kozuka’s struggles when he tried to use the music from Nausicca. I think in his case the editor had reservations about doing it and cautioned that they’d need to get Hisaishi’s blessing first. If the editor hadn’t been familiar with Kozuka’s struggle then perhaps Yuzuru would’ve had similar issues for editing the music together.

Thanks for the insight! I think that explains a lot.

In case it wasn’t shared, here’s a translation of the article I mentioned with Keiichi Yano who edits music for much of Team Japan. Under the section about Hope and Legacy he reveals that Yuzuru initially requested an edit of the two pieces for Hope and Legacy, and when the request was made permissions wasn’t already obtained. Then he talks a bit more about Kozuka’s and how he had to redo his original edit. It mentions the biggest problem was joining two songs.

An interesting read. It’s unfortunate for Kevin but I think it just goes to show that many skaters it doesn’t even register that they may need to clear their music edit with the artists.

So earlier in this thread I was told Kevin would not consider skipping NHK because he loves Japan. Honestly after seeing the short and knowing he’s got a “patched” together long where he is trying to cut down a former program, I still think a wiser decision would have been to skip this extensive travel and stay home and train a new long effectively. Maybe he will prove me wrong in his long but I’m not hopeful

I dont even understand why someone would make a big deal about this.. Like really.. its a figure skater.. its not like the music is playing at KKK rallies :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

If the copyright owner of the music doesn't like how the music is being used, in whatever context, they have the right to withdraw permission for the music to be used. That's the copyright holder's decision, no matter how ridiculous it may seem to you.

Probably because the composer/producer/etc. would like you to pay more in order to use the music in such a public manner. There are other possibilities, but that is the simplest one.

It's free advertisment. I've wanted a number of songs or soundtracks because someone skated to it and I loved it.

I’m sorry that it upsets people but the people that developed the music have rights too. Those rights are not any less just because your skater happens to be skating to the music. Would you like it if people took your property and did with it what they wanted without compensating you?

As an artist, I understand that someone might not like what someone else is doing with the piece. As far the with compensation is concerned, like I said above, it's free advertisment, so I wouldn't have a problem with that. If sales increase, I'd be compensated.

I'm sorry, but as an artist, I find the idea of creating work for the sake of "exposure" preposterous. Stop devaluing my work and my labor. Pay me. I deserve a paycheck just like everyone else.

I don't hear anyone saying that the rights holder has no right to make the decision or that the rights holder shouldn't be paid. What is being questioned is why the rights holder -- the video-game people of the composer -- views the trade-off as they did when they refused to allow use.

Someone should skate to just a recording of edges cutting into the ice. Start with the sound of just one skater's blades, and gradually add more skaters until suddenly the rink is filled with the sounds of blades, (literally) carving out a melody.

Actually, I started that off facetiously, but now I think that would be kind of awesome.

I do too! You know in Riverdance when there is no music and you just hear the dancers tapping the floor? Like the dance battle thing and they echo each other back and forth? I've always thought it would be great of someone would skate to that. :ROFLMAO:
