Very sad indeed, he was one of the good old 90ies guys, to young to go. He was working as a coach now, right? I remember Euros 1996, when he won the silver for Russia, beating Ilia Kulik, but still wasn't sent to worlds. That was when he made the move to skate for AZE.

May he rest in peace!

My memory is going.. Is he the one who was coaching Angela Nikodinov at the end of her career????? and in the taxi with her Mom and Dad in Portland?

SO SAD, RIP Igor... any details what happened?

Very sad. RIP.

20 years ago, 1996, our club (Espoon Jäätaiturit) in Finland had a guest star in our annual spring show, Igor Pashkevich! The story was 'Kenkä kateissa' a mixture of several fairy tales revised. It was the first show my daughter skated.

OMG, he was only 44. :(

I really liked his skating. Introverted and sensitive. If I recall he made his own costumes too? He had a beautiful blue costume that was hand painted and sequenced that I think they said he made himself?

Sad.

ETA: Thanks to the admin. for merging the 2 threads.

So sad & so young! I still can't imagine why anyone would do that unless it's the very final stage of a terminal illness, with great physical pain. (Shudders.)

Although I myself do not have depression, I know many people who do. Depression is a mental illness that really, really warps your reality and makes things seem so much worse than they are. It's hard for other people to understand, and I am fortunate that I do not have to go through the struggle, but I also don't fully understand what it's like.

Regardless, I think it's a bit early to be speculating on cause of death. For now, I'm sending all condolences to his family, friends, and skaters.

I am now living in Miami and haven't heard anything about this yet. How sad :(

Yes, condolences to his loved ones. It's still a shocker. I remember his wonderful skating &, later, standing by the boards with Angela.

Wonderful skater. Having looked over his career trajectory, I find his timing for a career insanely unfortunate. In 1996 when he was achieving fabulous results, he had been competing for usually only 2 slots on the World team with Urmanov, Kulik, and Abt, with Yagudin and Plushenko coming up quick behind...so he likely sensed this was dangerous territory, even with his great skills. No idea what his personal feelings were, just conjecture. And before 96, Tataurov was often keeping him out of silver at Nationals. So in 1997 and 98 he competes for AZE but like so many others who country hop, his results declined. I wonder if he had any deep regrets for the way his career ended, mired in the teens at the Olympics after looking so promising 2 years prior. Surely being in the accident with Angela and her mother was a life altering event also. I just feel terribly about all of this.

I don't want to go into speculations, but his Wiki-page now claims that he was murdered....

Of course, anyone can edit Wiki at anytime, to write anything they like!

Anyway, this is just so incredibly sad. I remember that blue costume. It was the 97/98 season, right, he wore it for his Olympic free skate in 98. So beautiful.

ETA: I remember Pashkevich in the same group of skaters as Konstantin Kostin, world junior silver medalist for USSR and 3rd in for Russia at Euros 93. Then went on to skate for his native Latvia. And also Sergei Rylov, who I believe was also Russian and later skated for Azerbadjan, and Andrejs Vlaschenko, from Russia, then competing for Latvia and then many years for Germany. All very good, solid skater, but never quite emerged their talent to win any big titles. As I said, they were the "old school", solid Russians, together with Urmanov and Tataurov, and I enjoyed them all very much.
