Say, I was wondering about something. The question that came to me today is...Does anyone know if it is traditional or mandatory for Skaters who are going to be partners with another skater for Ice-Dance or Pairs to have a background check? Or do skaters just trust their coach?

I have not heard of any parents who did a background check on the potential partner.

Finding a partner is hard enough, and the coaches have their criteria for vetting potential partners -- from the physical characteristics (height, weight), to skating style, skills, and levels to level of experience. In pairs, can the partner jump? Or lift?

There may be some cautionary warnings like the mom is overbearing or meddles in everything. Or worse, cray cray. But these are things that may not be reflected in a background check

@FSWer no, a background check isn't required. But skaters don't just trust their coach, when they're looking for a partner. There is a lot of gossip in skating, and skaters will usually know a lot about other skaters already. Or they will ask other people, if they want to find out more about someone.

Also, coaches don't just put skaters together and tell them they will now be a pair or an ice-dance team. The two skaters usually do some try-out sessions, like practices, to see if they skate well together. The coach or coaches will be there to watch them. For pairs skaters they would usually try elements like lifts and throw jumps, as well as side-by-side skating. Ice dance teams would usually do side-by-side skating and some of the compulsory dances (pattern dances).

The skaters wouldn't try being a team unless they had done a try-out session first. And even if the skaters skate well together, they might not become a team if they don't like each other, or if they can't train at the same times or places, or if they can't find a coach they both like.
