Hurricane Fiona/Nova Scotia

My sister, niece and nephew are in Truro. My daughter in law is in Annapolis Royal. My son is in Budapest probably worried sick about his wife.

It appears that PEI and Cape Breton got hit really hard but it's a mess everywhere.

I don't want to call anyone because I don't want to use up any of their phone batteries. Didn't get much sleep last night.

Yes I have friends in Halifax and my sister-in-law has extensive relatives in Turo. I’ve been following a couple of storm chasers .. confirmed by one that biggest storm to hit Canada. My friend’s grandparents are good in Halifax she said they told her worst has gone by, extensive damage and wind gusts.

I told my friend about the massive power outage first thing this morning. Her husband works for Hydro and he said there are hydro workers from every province and the U.S. already there on standby to start working once it’s done and safe to do it.

NS power outage map: http://outagemap.nspower.ca/external/default.html
(Some 80% of the province without power)

Storm surge issues across the Atlantic provinces with buildings being washed away in Newfoundland :( Part of Port-aux-Basques now being evacuated: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/hurricane-fiona-nl-saturday-1.6594422
My friend lives in Gander .. I think she’ll be ok? Ugh.

Word now that one woman was washed into the water along with her house - she was rescued when others jumped in to pull her out!! Apparently she was taken to hospital.

My brother in PEI has no power, might get it back tomorrow. He lives near People's cemetery and there are a lot of trees down there. My younger sister lives outside of Halifax - no power there.

My older sister has cottage on the north side of PEI - she heard the next door cottage was moved off its posts onto the road by the storm surge.

No power here, supposed to be back on by noon tomorrow.

We are just outside of Halifax and are okay.

Storm stopped about 10:00am this morning.

No power. We lost it at 4:00am this morning along with cell service.

Cell service just came back and power flicked on for 5 minutes and went out again.

No damage to our property or my parents or ILs just loss of power and cell services.

My DH slept about an hour last night so much wind and rain.

My heart goes out to others in Cape Breton and Port Aux Basques.

We spent the night in and took the ferry from Port aux Basques in August. That poor little town….

In Come from Away, the newbie reporter says she came from PAB “ where we didn’t even have a stoplight.”

Heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to everyone there. My Grandmother was born in Lunenburg, south of Halifax.
I believe Lunenburg was unscathed with this storm. Many of my maternal ancestors were part of the original settlement of Lunenburg in 1753, coming from Europe at the invitation of/with the assistance of the British government.

They are now reporting some 20 homes in PAB either washed away or completely destroyed. They believe there are more but they can't get to them until things are quieter and in daylight, tomorrow. There are some 25-30 people being accommodated in the school overnight after a mandatory evacuation.

Damage seen across Halifax following Post-Tropical Cyclone Fiona

If you look at the video above and know Halifax at all most of that looks like it took place on the Peninsula which is where the
Camp Hill Cemetery is. In general Peninsula, Halifax is older than other areas. I live near the Dingle which was built in the 60s & the 70s.
I'm told by a friend who lives there that the roof blew off an apartment building in Spryfield, which is off the "peninsula". Lots of damage, thankfully no serious injuries or deaths in NS or PEI*. Not the same in NF, unfortunately. The body of the 73 year old woman has just now been confirmed to have been found in Port-aux-Basques :(

*I've now heard that there was a death in PEI too :(

Fiona took this PEI landmark.

We got our power back 5:30 last night. My younger sister in Halifax got her power back 6 AM Sunday. A tree fell on the porch roof of her cottage in PEI (eastern end). My older sister went to check her cottage in PEI (on the North shore) - she said it was like a war zone over there - so much damage.

Still now power in much of CBRM. They are saying Monday at the earliest They arebhaving trouble getting enough poles as hundreds fell. It sucks especially since also on a well so no water.

That was the most annoying part of our power outage - no water for the toilets - we have a generator but no way of powering our well pump. And we totally forgot to fill a few buckets before the storm. We did get some water from my brother-in-law on Saturday.

My brother in PEI still has no power.

My older sister got back from PEI and sent us an email about the damage to her cottage. They actually fared quite well, mostly damage on the outside but they're not sure about the plumbing. When power is restored they'll go back and assess things.
