On Memorial day, the history channel, A&E and Lifetime will broadcast a remake of Alex Haley's Roots. The cast includes Laurence Fishburne, Johnathan Rhys Meyers, Anna Pacquin, James Purefoy, Forrest Whitaker, Anika Noni Rose and some new faces. I will never be able to see Jonathan Rhys and James Purefoy(two actors I had crushes on and admire their work) the same.

Here is the first trailer https://youtu.be/ZZwaqFhs9fo

Looks very powerful. I predict late May and early June will have some race related discussions around the world and this country.

As an AA, I was 7 when the first roots premiered and I remember it very very vividly. I remember being hurt emotionally but not really angry. I do recall the sorrow and anger of my family and neighbors felt. I have watched the original roots a few times since(at times it is too painful to watch). I think this new version/remake if done well will capture the hearts of younger generations as it did me.

I hope that it really will be as "groundbreaking" for them; as the first "Roots" was for me.
I don't believe that today's viewers know enough about slavery, what followed; and the consequences, which are felt even now.

I agree but for me it more profound on a human and humanity point of view. When you put a face and name to millions of people who were "3/5 of person" and a 3 year old toddler who is considered livestock, it is a whole different kind of evil.
