Giving Tuesday

Just wanted to encourage everyone to do what they can on Giving Tuesday to make the world a little bit better. I would like to be able to donate my time, but I find that with my work schedule it doesn't work out very often. So today I went to Big Brothers, Big Sisters and donated $100. I know not everyone can do that but even $5 can help. Or maybe there's something in your house you could donate - old clothing, or unused toys, or furniture. Big Brothers, Big Sisters operates a store called Jewel that sells gently used women's clothing and accessories.

I was listening to a documentary on the weekend on the homeless and how there biggest need is socks. The number of homeless individuals who become sick and injured because they have difficulty finding socks to keep their feet warm and dry is very high and socks are the number one item that shelters and other agencies go through.

I've heard that what the homeless women here in Vancouver really need is underwear. Women donate all sorts of clothes, but don't ever think of buying some packs of underwear (I'm assuming no one would actually donate underwear, which is just yucky).

Victoria now has a group called the Period Posse who are collecting all sorts of menstrual products for women living in shelters. Apparently this is an item that is rarely donated and always needed.

Bill Clinton famously donated used underwear. :D

This discussion of needed items you might not think of reminds me of a military support group where individual service members post what they need. One woman soldier in the Middle East said that she and other women were desperate for African-American hair products. I didn’t know much about them, but I went to Rite Aid and bought some of everything they had. (We had more money then.) The soldier was ecstatic. She took the time to write me a letter (which they usually don’t do) and called me the Supporter of the Year. :) So I would add those to the list of helpful items.
