I though Enbert has "professor's voice" or "intellectual's voice", rather than "tall handsome man voice". His voice has no "macho" elements at all. You can hear bits of it in "Night Urgant" interview after Enbert's win at "Ice Age".

Interview with Yagudin

Q: What happens when the skating career is over?
Yags: Emptiness. Not understanding the future, unability to nuderstand life within a moment. It happens because preivously the fed, coaches and parents did it all for you, you were like a well oiled tram - going from point A to point B and preferably point B would be a medal. You have your rails and you follow them. You would not fall because the falls will be there and you can lain on them. The Fed was doing all the paperwork, the studies - parents helped, mom was there with me in the practice... These years in the sport, though perhaps now things are different, but I doubt - all that surrounds you it all worked for improving your sports results and not understanding what life is. When the sports was over and usually it's not the medals and then you are lost. You are lost in time - there is no schedule, you don't know what life is, you odn't know how to do the paperwork, even now I ask Tanya Totmianina to help. But even for me - an Olympic champion, I sat for 1.5 years and had no clue what is next. I would go throught the championship protocols, I was looking at the old photos, I was coaching - helping TAT with her pupils. It's all really thanks to Averbukh - the `Ice Age' show opened the door to be popular. TAT gave me a huge chance in life - I have more opportunities than most of the athletes who don't have the medal, Averbukh gave the 2nd life and the continuation.

Q: `Ice Age' happened in 2006 after Turino. The fame would continue for how long? 2 years?
Yags: Indeed. Averbukh combined the USA and the UK ideas and added the acting.

Q: For several years it was on the TV, then you had 4 years break and now you are back, the current season is so popular thanks to the stars you had participating and the project. The most talks are about Zagitova and Buzova (a star).
Yags: Am often asked when will she come back and I always answer she never left

Q: But when they do shows it means they left
Yags: Take Pluschenko - he came back and triumphed - he has 4 Olympic medals at least silver. Indeed he kept in shape but he took breaks.

Q: Is it possible now? We call them disposible champions - get their medal really fast and retire fast, the sport is so young. They win and retire young
Yags: You are right the figure skating became younger. The reason - when the judging system have changed the rules and the points have changed and it took time to adapt. The rules made the skaters' lives harder - at my time when I was doing the spins I would be all over the place but I only really had to jump. The rules made our lives harder - the jumps are in the 2nd part of the programme, new positions in the spins. Physically it's harder - they have to do so much more at the same period of time. But the new guys are training in a different way from the scratch. Now when they all adapted and they are comfortble with the rules there is a progress. In the past we were doing doubles and triples, now we can't imagine the top 6 without the quads. Of course when you are small and thin you can regroup in the air and do the quad. For men - it happens that you grows into a tiny man, but the girls - we know what happens to their bodies. Only when you are a kid or a very young adult you can win it. Hence the ones who win it are those before the puberty. But really it's not something that happened recently - remember Tara Lipinski who beat Michelle Kwan. Kwan stayed around for 4 more years. It's not new.

Q: The new champions by Tutberidze are Lipnitskaya clones.
Yags: She opened the pandora box of the quads. But now there are more coaches who have the quad jumping ladies - Davydov and some others. When you try something new - you try it and then you have a chance to take a step back. But then the time comes and someone will jump into the high water, you get used to it and everyone will jump in. Now we have everyone in. There is no chance now winning the gold without. You can probably win it now, but you need the others to fall around in that day.

Q: quintable - possible?
Yags: I think so. It's hard to believe, but I think so. If 18 years ago when I was at my Olympics someone told me the girls would be landing 4 quads I would say no way, not so fast. But here is the reality: figure skating progressed so much in the recent years.

Q: The rules have changed after the SLC and the pairs / dance scandal. Now everything have changed - even the entry into the jump was something that had no point when you skated.
Yags: Indeed. Every element has a base value and dependin on how it was executed the GOE is added. Everything that happens on the ice can be done prettier and it will give more points in the 2nd mark. Take an axel - you can do it a rippon, you can change the direction/edge at the exit, you can enter it differently. In the past - it was just 4T - either you landed it or not. The judge would decide who is better or worse. The system was clear to the audience. Now... Zagitova and I did a video try out with the explanation how the past is different from the current.

Q: You come from the different generation - she is 18, you are 40
Yags: thanks for reminding.
Q: Nevertheless, you are from the different generation and you were explaining that you were landing a 3T, it all looked nice and you got the marks. Now you need the complexity
Yags: Right. Yet it makes the programme not necessarily more interesting. There are not many who can create something interesting. In the past we were performing - recall the jumping Stojko, the classical Eldredge, the artistic Candelloro. There were personalities. Now there are not so many - it's a chase after the levels. Say if now there are rules for the highest levels everyone will be doing it. The programmes lost it's special thing, they are all the same.

Q: But take Lipnitksaya's Schindler's list it was a masterpiece.
Yags: I didn't say they don't exist.

Q: Did you ever disagree with the judging. Not necessarily in your career?
Yags: No.
Q: Never? Averbukh was annoyed with Slutskaya not winning the Olympics, he thought she should had won
Yags: for her previous achievements? Or for that particular skates? I disagree- in these couple of days she was not the best. I love Irina, but we, the Russians are used to blame someone else - we are the best and everyone hates us. TAT taught me to look for the problems within.

Q: You are probably asked a lot about Yags/Pluschenko competition. I can imagine how sick you are of that question, but I think it gives some kind of drama. We love tlaking about the drama between two - Zag/Medvedeva, you and Pluschenko. There are rumours Medvedeva did not want to participate the Ice Age because Zagitova was there
Yags: Haven't Averbukh answered?
Q: Not really. He wanted Medvedeva to skate and Zagitova to host.
Yags: I think they had a schedule clashes.
Q: And yet there is a drama: they both were at the Olympics and only one won. When you were going to your Olympics where you going to compete or win?
Yags: When I was going there of course I was one of the contenders but at any rate most assumed Pluschenko would win - he won the whole prevoius season. There are always doubts - even when you are the best professional when you stop questioning yourself you are done. That season - I had a lot to think about - I lost the whole previous season and it didn't add to my mood. In the GPF we were doing 2 LPs, I spated one, I lost by one voice, the SP I lost by one voice - both the Russian judge and then the LP I beat him by one voice. The judges had their job and I don't want to tlak about it. So I won the 2nd LP. It was more costly thna both previous programmes. And I won. Then he didn't come to the Europeans and I think it was their - his coach's mistake. They were not afraid, but something happehed., for some reason they changed the programme before the Olympics and came there. The GPF victory for me... it gave a hope. It took me the whole season - I was losing and then finally I won. And he didn't come to the Europeans and agian I won. So the victory was slipping from me, but I was slightly more confident at the Olympics.

Q: I was thinking how do you feel before the competition. How much the shrinks were working with you?
Yags: They didn't. You just had to fall asleep. You can't explain with the words how do you feel.
Q: So it was a mental victory - take Lipnitskaya, she is such a genius - Sotnikova won, no one cared who won - she was the sensation, but she lost.
Yags: I don't know what happened to her. The question is what is consistency - it's not 9 out of 10, but one time but at the rigth time. Take Kurt Browning - a 4 time World champion and never got a medal at hte Olympics.

Q: The Olympics you competed with PLuschenko and everyone thought he'd win
Yags: Tarasova never did
Q: Ok, not Tarasova. You were working in the same group with Mishin, and you left to TAT. The press were writing so much about it, you said in one of the interviews there were even talks and even Piseev made sure to hint nothing nice will happen to you if you switch coaches. So I wonder - why Mishin and his pupils were more important than TAT and her pupils for the FED?
Yags: TAT is very independent ,she lives for her pupils and doesn't care about the RusFed. The ydon't like it.
Q: You never won the nationals.
Yags: I never cared about it. I just needed to make it to the team. That's it. I didn't want to be an Olympic champion at once - I wanted to be in the team. Then Euros. Then Worlds. I just wanted to make it to the team and go ot the Euros and Worlds.

Q: If Pluschenko didn't fall at hte Olympics, what would happen?
Yags: I don't like the what ifs. Whatever happened happened.

Q: In what PLuschenko is better than Yagudin and in what Yagudin is better? Some say PLusch is better in jumps and Yags in steps.
Yags: I don't compare. I think Evgeni.. in sports- he is a genios athlete. 4 Olympics - it's 16 years! He is the consisten man that am talking about, he moved so far the figure skating in our country. He is the dude with the balls. That's kind of an athlete he is.

Q: The shrink who was working with you and putting a spell on Pluschenko. In one of the interviews it was mentioned that TAT couldn't enter the men dressing room and someone was needed.
Yags: It's what TAT said. I dind't mind. We all understand in our life our head influences the things. We doubt and then things don't work. Zuiganov would talk to me about everyrhing. About his love when he was young, about work with the others. He would just turn my mind to something else. When you are alone you burn out. Zuiganov would speak to me non stop. As for the magic - well he came, said that my head is full, lie down and fall asleep. So I pretendet to be asleep. He would move his hands and say now there is a balance. Ok, there is balance. There are things I took from working with him - analyzing my actions. He would tell me to write down - jumps, quads, dog, mom, mood, weather. The day is over and you have stuff you want to improve. In 3 days you will not remember. Thanks to these notes at the end of the week I would know what are my weaknesses. And the other one is the saying `who if not you. When if not now?'. When I went on the ice he told me: just say that phrase. No one can help us when we are there on the ice. So I did. As for the mental pressure - Mishin is a great psychologyst. He went exactly where I was doing the quad. A year before that he killed me with that - I was entering the quad and where the press were sitting... you think the athlete can't see the audience, but we see them. I was entering the jump, I saw Mishin and it distructed me. I fell and then fell agian. He is a very good in that. But seriously, Pluschenko fell because of the magic? Ok, whatever.

Q: What happens after you wins the Olympics?
Yags: I was empty. There were so many emotions, the adrenaline, the fear - in the K&C I understood we won the Olympics. Then on the podium I wanted to cry a bit, but no, I had no emotions left. That was it. There is nothing else after.

Q: After hte athlete retire you get some money - 50K$, then from the NOC 50K$, then the life salary 30Krubles. It's not that much? You can't really live on now 50K.
Yags: It's possible to live on. Just that when you have a family and you are used to a certian standard, well, no.

Q: Not everyone has a rich wife like Pluschenko. You and Utiasheva became the media people. But not everyone can do it, take athletes - what can they do after. What do they do?
Yags: I don't know. It's a hole not everyone can get out from. Some drink themselves to death. But a lot go coaching I guess. Since 2002 the times have changed. Now in Sochi there is an international sports institute where the athletes who retired can learn to become a sports journalist, teacher, a technical specialist. The uni works for several years now. I.e. the athletes are given help and they can accept it. Yes, some have a harder life and some easier but it's up to us. I hate it when people say they didn't have enough time. It means you didn't want it enough. You'll always reach your goals if you work hard.

Q: What did the USSR athletes do before the shows?
Yags: Coached. In the last years of the USSR there were the USA/Canada shows that they were participating. Iwas part of the stars on ice - 60 cities in the USA and 12 in Canada. It was not just hte champions but those who were interesting to watch - for example the French Tobel - the 2m dude, who would go out there in the tutu and would do a swan lake or carmen. You would pee laughing. There were stars on ice and champions on ice.

Q: Do you remember Suria Bonaly who did a back flip. What about her now?
Yags: They all skated for so many years in the shows: Baul, Petrenko, Klimova/Ponomarenko, Grischuk/Platov... but again it's the winners, but the others mostly coached.

Q: Why did they move to the USA? Say Grischuk/Platov? The finances?
Yags: First TAT was coaching there and that's whree I moved as well. But back then the USA was the place to earn. Now it's in Asia and Russia.

Q: As the Olympic champions you got Porsche and yours was stolen?
Yags: Not in 2002. The cars etc began at 2006.
Q: But your medals were stolen
Yags: Well, some were left. I live today and tomorrow. I don't really mind about the trophies and the medals. A while ago I was added to the Hall of Fame. So I was like ok. It all would matter if it was back then, but 18 years after the Olympics? Totmianina reads a lot and she sent me a quote about the meaning of life - there is no meaning - you dind't wnat to be here, it was 2 people who came together and here you are. If you like the icecream eat it now, tomorrow it will not matter. The medals for me... are an ability to get something in the future, but the medals are the past. Yes, it's a nice and happy past but today... it has no influence. It's a done deal, that page is turned, I want to enjoy today. But hte past. So ok, am part of the Hall of Fame, it's nice, thanks, but I don't really care.

Q: Averbukh's show happened you to get out from the depression?
Yags: It was not depressed, I didn't know what to do with myself. Am depressed before my birthday. Averbukh gathered us - the atheltes and created what keeps us on till today. There were Ice Ages, kids Ice Ages, there were so many more things - the New Year's shows, the corporate shows. There were no breaks. Ok, may be I spent like 1.5 years doing nothing, but I always was busy.

Q: What is your main income today?
Yags: figure skating. Till 9/3 it was shows. 9/3 was our last show in Perm. Till today we had 2 shows in Salikhard - it was 9 months later 9-10/12. There are no New Year's shows, which are the most money bringing so it's mainly the ads and the TV projects. For 5.5 months I had no jobs. I do team buildings, I do company corporates. I had some shoots for the TV over the autumn and now a TV show. But it's a side thing. Nothing. Tanya and I sat down and decided what can we give up. We knew a financial blow is coming. We would have survived, but we decided to cut things down. We sold the car, we gave up the driver.

Q: You have a mansion in France that costs more than 1M$.
Yags: I always earned quite well.
Q: I read it was 800K$, but after the restoration works it's almost 2M$
Yags: If you say.
Q: I say the media people should earn well
Yags: Well, I've been working for 18 years. And while I was an athlete every competition victory was 30K, the Worlds 50K. We were earning quite well.

Q: You are not a usual athlete - usually they are physically great but their communication skills are not so great. Even TAT said she was shocked how well you are doing the shows, the TV, the moves, the corporates. Zagitova was critisized for hosting the show.
Yags: Russians tend to critisize all the time. Kick out Isinbaeva from the judges, kick out Zagitova from the hosts, kick out Yags from the commentary, kick out Buzova from the participants... I recall my frist times on the stage with the microphone, it was hard. But the humans can do anything if thye want to learn and progress.

Q: Of course Zagitova's first show and now are different -she is so much better and she learned so much. But really the first time she seemed so unconfident, she is so loved and there were so much hate to her. You were supporting her all the time in instagram and what not. Do you think she has a future in your line of work?
Yags: Anyone has a chance.

Q: Are you reading the motivation books?
Yags: I don't even read. I do the motivation trainings.

Q: You say it's not the talent that decides, but the hard work.
Yags: Yes, the hard work that turned the monkey into the human.

Q: Buzova - one of the stars participants - she is not improving much.
Yags: She made it to the finals. She was on the ice when I came, she was on the ice when I left. It's not that the others don't work. But those who critisize her - I wish you to have 1% of her working ability. We did not become very close - I was there just once a week, but the guys there became good friends. The Ice Age - 4 months they had - it's not easy to put the skates on and skate. It's easier for me - I come, talk to the guys, see who broke a rib, who changed a progrmame. I work without the help of the scenarists, I do all the communication myself, I want the real reaction and not the well learned text.

Q: Do you agree with the ice age winners?
Yags: Yes. This year it was the judges only. There was the popular vote, but that's it. I agree. I don't understand why someone is sad they are 2nd or 3rd.

Q: When you were participating the first season and were skating you were upset about your marks?
Yags: WE were not communicating at all. We were talking through someone. Am a single skater who never skated with someone. My partner was a super strong personality and she was telling me what elements she wants to do. So we were two very strong personalities who clashed. I didnt' care about hte marks. The other season when I was skating with someone else and she was bashed in the media I answered quite harshly. But seriously, what is the Ice Age victory? Who cares? I reacall a project I participated - I got my adrenaline boost, I participated and that wsa it. Who cares?

Q: You are very harsh, you sometimes talk in a way that shocks. Were you always like that?
Yags: Rude? Yes, I was always like that. I hate stupid people, I hate when people tell me how to live my life. You don't like me putting the photos of me kissing my daughter? Unsubscribe! I am a piece of shit who can improve. But I didn't ask for your opinion, so either give me the critique I can work with or just f@#4 off.

Q: Your spouse Totmianina skated with Cheburchenko and then she was injured and Khokhlova replaced her. Someone asked whether the reason was that you were jealous. She answered jealousy is about hte person and not the packaging.
Yags: Good for her. She was injured and yet the comments about my jealousy kept coming. She had enough. How much can you beat the injured Totmianina? So good for her. It's not the first time that stuff is written. She is a very patient person.

Q: There are a lot of romances in the Ice Age.
Yags: it's all in the media. The media writes something and then it blows up.
Q: I only talk about those who gave interviews.
Yags: I don't know. It happened? I don't know. I came there, hosted and left. So I don't know.
Q: You were the sex symbol of Ice Age: Daineko, Savelieva and your spous.
