Aly Raisman: USA Gymnastics needs sweeping change after scandal

"I feel like there's a lot of articles about it, but nobody has said, `This is horrible, this is what we're doing to change,'" Raisman said in a wide-ranging interview Saturday shortly after she and other members of the "Final Five" that won team gold at the 2016 Olympics were inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

USA Gymnastics said in a statement late Saturday it welcomes Raisman's passion, adding it's ``appalled'' by the accusations against Nassar.

"We are taking this issue head-on, and we want to work with Aly and all interested athletes to keep athletes safe,'' USA Gymnastics said.

Raisman has used her celebrity and extensive social media reach as a platform to promote positive body image and anti-bullying ... while weighing whether to take a shot at the 2020 Games.

Either way, she wants USA Gymnastics to evolve and stressed there's a difference between her criticism of USA Gymnastics and the sport as a whole.

The sport is fine. It's part of the fabric of her life. It's the organization that needs to change. And she's clear on the message she wants it to send.

Aly is in position to be a great advocate for reform. She's well known, highly respected, articulate and a much-needed voice for the gymnast.

I was satisfied that Simone said the Final Five support Aly because their group has enough notoriety to shield Aly from mistreatment as a result of taking the difficult but morally right position.

Some criticize Simone for not saying more, but my thought is Simone has enough to advocate for (ie adoption, ADHD, etc.) that she can let Aly take this one. ETA: That and Simone also receives enough criticism for just being black, not taking on black issues, but just being black. So I support Simone as long as she supports Aly.

Great article an I agree 100 percent. In the past I worked with coaches An skaters and saw similar traits of old school coaching. Public humiliation of weighing just the girls, isolating the skaters from their parents, creating a fear based relationship etc. Resulting in girls with eating disorders and powerless.
