Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

God, it only took a few minutes for such a tragedy to happen.
A few minutes and the last twenty years of building sub-standard buildings - and allowing these to be builts - even though the earthquake regulations were in place. More than half of the buildings that were completely destroyed are new.

Some of the biggest contractors have already left the country. They expect to be prosecuted.

As they should be. The way those buildings are collapsing or toppling over sideways is criminal. 😢

"For 30 years, the land crossing between Turkey and Armenia has been closed to traffic as a result of tensions. Now, for the first time in three decades, a convoy of trucks has rolled across the Margara Bridge — bringing humanitarian aid to earthquake victims."

❤️ There is also an Armenian search and rescue team in Adiyaman and we are very grateful.

I'm not optimistic that relations will thaw thanks to this gesture though. The last time the border was opened was for the 1988 earthquake in Erivan, when Turkey sent aid to Armenia. These are exceptional circumstances.

The 12-14 year old girls' and boys' volleyball teams, champions of Northern Cypress, were in a hotel in Adiyaman for a regional tournament.

Now it is confirmed that none of the 25 girls and boys have survived. :wuzrobbed 10 adults - coaches, teachers and parents, are also dead.

It turns out the hotel where they were staying was illegally built and there was a court order for its demolition. 25 young lives are cut short. 25 families will suffer for the rest of their lives. Just so some building company's profits increase by 5%! When will this monstrous greed end? :wuzrobbed

Please look at their photos here and at how happy they were in this last video, celebrating one of the teams' victory one day before the earthquake.

Such tragedies are terrible. But when you realize that many victims could have been avoided, then it's even worse.
Unfortunately, many people do not understand that safety regulations are written in blood.
This is my biggest issue with people that want everything de-regulated. Some regulations are non-negotiable as man cannot be trusted to do what is right. Such horrible, unnecessary devastation.

It's so infuriating---now over 46,000 dead and how many could have been avoided if construction was not so shoddy?

A great many, judging by how some of the buildings were left standing.

The number of dead is an understatement, unfortunately. :(

Some decisions concerning the search and rescue efforts seem to have resulted in more deaths too. :wuzrobbed

Meanwhile there have been two further earthquakes (not after-shocks) of 6.4 and 5.8 in the region this evening, causing some previously damaged buildings to crumble. These buildings had been evacuated.

These new earthquakes mean that now alarm has been raised for Adana and Cyprus.

If you have Turkish friends or colleagues, please know that they are not OK. :(

This wasn't an earthquake, it was Armageddon. On the final count 230.000 buildings have been flattened or very badly damaged. They'll never admit the number of deceased, but the first earthquake was at 4 am when everyone was in bed. So you can imagine. Hundreds of thousands. 🕯️

I can't stand the suffering of people. Don't know how they survive from one day to the other. People are always tweeting photos of laughing children, young people, whole families. No need to read the tweets, they are all dead.

There is no drinking water in Hatay. Where there is still tap water, this isn't drinkable because leakage from thousands of corpses have contaminated the water.

Give your friends a hug. They need it.

My sister just returned from Turkey after a 10 day stint with a medical team. She was in a remote town and the devastation was overwhelming. She flew there with 200 lbs of donated medical, comfort and essential supplies (4 large checked bags) and only wished she could have brought more.

Her overall impression despite the devastation and great need, was the kindness and generosity of the people she was there to treat and help. People camping outside their destroyed homes, lost everything yet every morning they would bring hot coffee to the medical team. A group from India set up a kitchen to provide hot meals daily and the locals insisted that the medical team go to the head of the line.

She's already making plans to join another trip in the coming weeks and this time her nurse daughter will join.

The need for everything is so great, not just medical supplies but basics. One of the biggest hits was a supply of work gloves donated by one of my BIL. Toothbrushes, reading glasses, toys for the children, lotions, sanitary supplies, etc. We are all working to put together as much as we can get for the next trip. We'll all pitch in and pay the excess bag charges.

@skatemomaz we are so grateful to your sister, her team and all the foreign teams who supply vital health care and aid to the earthquake zone! ❤️

Much love to her and her daughter!
