Cheer thread for Anastasia Gubanova

Good luck to Anastasia in her Olympic debut and to the team of the Republic of Georgia. I hope they can somehow cause an upset and make the final five of the team competition.

Actually since Keegan couldn't skate in the team event for Canada, I expect Georgia to qualify for the team final!

Really? Then it looks like a good opportunity for Georgia but anastasiia skates very early like at Europeans and they always lower your score thev earlier you skate. Although Georgia also has a good man and pretty good pairs I think. They are trying to make the team final against all odds so I hope it happens .

Sorry about Keegan not skating in the team event.

Wonderful Olympic debut for Nastya. Is the skate of her life! But she was obviously underscored again and should have been over 70. Karen had a bad skate for the United States States and the judges gave her PCS more than 3 points higher than Nastyas. It's some ways this is worse than politics. :(

Amazing KaMissile over 90 and you can't freaking give Nastya 70 when she's flawless? Of course then the judges favored the Canadian girl so Georgia is not going to the free skate it will be Canada and China instead. Of course it's very nice that Canada and America and China are represented by the judges and Georgia and Russia are not. ;)

Good luck to Anastasia in the individual event. She is rebuilding her career I just hope she gets some help along the way from the judges with some fair scoring and especially a fair pcs. This girl skates like a woman and she's always been treated like a scrub by the judges going back to when she was a junior. I don't know how this ever changes for her. But it sure is nice seeing her skate at a world class level again and enjoying herself. :)

I also love hearing Olympic champion Tara Lipinski talk about Anastasia and what a beautiful skater she is.

Gubanova was beautiful. Just beautiful.
(and underscored).
That's the story of her career. :(

It's just so tough to see this super beautiful scanner get so severely underscored especially in PCS at European's and the Olympics since these are competitions she's literally been dying for her whole life to get to. It's like the judges just flick her aside like she's a gnat.

But at least Nastya finished ahead of Karen and got an extra point for her ex country in that race against the United States for the team gold.

Hopefully Anastasia can skate as well in the short program and the individual event and gets scored better. She really can't threaten Is the top skaters from Russia although Nastyas combination of very high level skating skills musicality artistry and interpretation is among the best in the sport and needs to be appreciated more. She has the grand slam of figure skating skills but too few know it.

On a side note back in the summer I think most of us thought Nastyas career in Russia was over and she was probably going to retire at the age of 18 to start a coaching corner. Now we get to see Anastasia at major International competitions thanks to the Georgia figure skating federation.

I'm so proud of my baby. I had no idea she was still skating (don't ask, I've been in my cave the last couple of years). It was a big surprise when I saw her on Ice and skating so well.

Beautiful skater. Brava!?

I think next season Gubanova will be judged more fairly. Tonight she should have scored above Schizas, who also skated very well.
It hasn't changed in five years for this girl. Why would it change next season especially since she represents lowly Georgia now? If Loena had skated her SP at this level it would have been 10 points higher. I would have been fine with that.

To take the skate of Anastasias life in her Olympic debut I thought you might like that is disgusting but we knew it would happen ahead of time which makes it kind of like a political race or professional wrestling. Not good when you know what's going to happen ahead of time no matter how well she skates. This of course puts too much pressure on anastasiia in the free skate after she skates flawlessly in the short program and gets held down.

Nastya is literally the only high-level figure skater I've ever seen who has never been over scored. Think about that.

But we can hold out hope that her scores will improve for next season. But don't hold your breath Vash. I mean her PCS scores are a joke almost four points less than Karen who had a rough skate?

And of course Georgia was held out of the team finals because of politics. Got to have China and Canada in there. Lol.

Where you been? I hope your cave was cozy ;)

It must have been such a pleasant surprise for you to see Nastya in her Olympic debut last night and skate flawlessly and beautifully as Tara Lipinski said.

I really think a lot of people thought Nastya would retire after last season so her skating for the Republic of Georgia is a great opportunity for this very talented skater to continue her career.
I hate it when figure skaters have to retire as teenagers because of too much competition in their country and Nastya was heading for that until Georgia came calling.

What a joy to see Anastasia on the Olympic stage. It was a beautiful skate that was totally undermarked. I expected her to be 70+, she should have scored ahead of Chen and Schizas for PCS. If marked correctly Georgia would be in the team final (I also felt the Pairs should have placed ahead of MT/M)

I guess she has to build a reputation for herself as she has been of the international scene for a few years. For now, I’m happy to see her competing internationally and not retired.

I agree with you on everything especially the scores and the pcs. I don't mind Anastasia having to earn her way but the judges have to help her out where she's flawless more than they do. In fact they don't help her they hurt her they hold her down and the BS PCS score she got kept Georgia out of the team final and that was no accident. This was done purposely and it was set up at Europeans where nastia was flawless in her SP and got a freaking 29 PCS. These athletes are incredible and I hate how screw with their lives and keep them down.

They squeezed Anastasia and the Georgia pair big time so they would not make the team final and they did not. It's kind of politics as usual in figure skating. And they don't care how obvious it is and what we say.

You are right 3T it was an amazing joy to see Nastya on the Olympic stage. :) Hopefully she will take more happy memories from Beijing. But the ladies individual competition is still so far off. Back to practice for her and all the other ladies.

Heya there.?
Eh...not that cozy given the last two years and a death in family. But with the cancellation of many events in 2020 and being bombarded with all the bad news, I stayed away from TV.

It was a beautiful surprise indeed to see her there. I wish the call from Georgia would've come earlier. Still, very happy to see her here and fingers crossed for the individual event. Here is wishing she has two clean and beautiful skates. ?

sorry about the death in your family, but it is nice to see you back.

Yes hoping for 2 excellent skates for Anastasia in the individual event. And you make a very good point about how I only wish she could have moved to Georgia a year ago because because her scores many people say will be much better her 2nd year representing Georgia is Georgia after establishing herself.

Sorry for your loss. we live in depressing times which is why some of us still turn to entertainment or sports to get away from things. Is figure skating is one of the sports that I like that I have not turned away from. I think a lot of people have gone through what you have and I'm sorry the pandemic has taken a toll on you but I don't blame you for pulling away. Tens of millions of people did the same thing it's hard to watch TV with all the bad news about the pandemic or whatever. I rarely watch the news anymore since I can get it on my phone or on yahoo.

I was shocked when I saw her score of 67. They gave Schizas a lot more. It was like the judges had already decided who should be in the team final.

This team final concept needs to be dropped. Let all nations in the TE skate both SP and LP.

I was not shocked when I saw a 67 because at Europeans they buried Nastya and she was fantastic in the short program and they gave her one of the most beautiful skaters in the world a 29 in PCS. Fraud. That was their way of saying nastya won't get anywhere near Karen Chen's PCS or any other top skaters PCS at the Olympics and it happened and they were able to deny Georgia the team event final and anastasia her rightful place which should have been third.

It's always been an uphill climb for nastya with the judges going back five years. She consistently gets the worst scores and worst PCS I've ever seen of a world-class figure skater.

I am so disappointed in the team event I can't even explain it. Not to have Young You and Loena Hendricks among others is just ridiculous. I mean does anyone really think that Germany is better than South Korea?

They also need to move the team event after the individual events. And what the Russian Federation did not letting Anna skate the free skate and not letting Tarasova and Morozov skate the free Skate for pairs left a bad taste in my mouth since Russia have the gold medal locked up for the team event they could have spread the wealth around a little bit to Anna and T and M who deserve a team gold medal.

The only good thing about the Russian figure skating Federation is that Nastya does not have to deal with them anymore. ;)

That’s the thing, not only was Anastasia denied the points and placement she deserved but Georgia was robbed of the spot they earned in the final. And I fear that she is limited in the reputation she can build because she does not skate for one of the big feds. This is what turns many of us off the sport.

i am sorry for your loss, Amantide

Yes that low score and lower than deserved PCS in the short program hurt Anastasia but this has happened throughout her career. As you pointed out if also hurt Georgia because those low scores Nastya got kept Georgia out of the free skate which would have been incredible Olympic memories for all the participants. Not fair. That was taken from Georgia in a political move. I'm sure the people in power went over what they had to do to keep Georgia out of the team free skate and they did just enough to do so. For what it's worth Georgia has a better team that China and maybe even Canada.

Good luck to Anastasia in the ladies event. I hope the experiences are incredible for her no matter how she skates or where she finishes.

Then hopefully next season she will start getting the scores and PCS she deserves. People keep telling me that's going to happen. I hope it does

South Korea and Belgium need to invest in pairs and ice dance teams. Say what you want about Germany, but that country is committed to pairs skating despite a small talent pool. They even qualified a dance team as well. Look how quickly Japan started developing an ice dance and a pairs team when it saw it was missing out on a team medal. I think J Fed made a huge mistake not going with KanDai since Daisuke is such a hero and would have inspired more Japanese men to go into ice dancing.

I think the team event pre-covid is a great way for skaters to break in the ice and ease into competition.

The team event can be made so much better with the things you said. But if they have clearly unfair judging to keep Nastia and Georgia out of the team final to get China in then it will taint the competition again. Even though Georgia had no real chance to medal they have a balanced team and should have finished it fourth or 5th.

And Russia was crazy to skate all 4 disciplines with the same talent and never split it up especially in a world where the virus that's never going to go away. Is why make KV tired and why risk injuring your top team?

The team event can be made better it may have to go at the end of the Olympics after the individual competitions. Or they need to have each team use 2 different groups for the short program and the free skate to make it a real team event. It was foolish and bush league for Russia to keep a team Olympic gold medal away from Anna and one of their other pairs teams. I mean think about it the reigning world champion did not get a skate in the team event it's ridiculous and it's never happened before in the 3 Olympic team competitions. I felt bad for Mariah Bell the reigning US national champion didn't even get to skate in team event that's why they need to change those rules that you can substitute in all 4 disciplines if you want to instead of just 2. KV ooked more exhausted than I've ever seen her after the team free skate. There was no need to run her out there again actually expense is the expense of Anna.

As for Anastasia I hope she's back to working hard with her coach and can give excellent performances in the individual competition. I hope she can somehow make the top 10 but with the incredible depth of the ladies between say 5 and 15 that's going to be hard for her to do especially the way she is underscored with her pcs. Nastia will have to deal with 3 Russian girls 3 Japanese girls 3 American girls plus Loena who the judges rightfully love and Young You who has a great triple axel for a tall lady figure skater.

Nastya had a splendid short program Olympic debut in the team event I saw it on NBC and Tara Lipinski was effusive in her praise for Anastasia. I would like to see it again or another country's video of this skate. Why can't I find the video anywhere of her short program?

You can't promote a sport if we don't get a replay of escape we want to see. Is discussed for other skaters as well.

While the draw is out for the ladies Olympic short program and I'm assuming Nastya is skating early again which will keep her scores lower than whatever they deserve to be and hammer her PCS.Which has only been in the range of 27 to 30 points in her lovely short program this year.

It's great to see Nastya so happy in the pictures I've seen. She is rebuilding her career and I guess her scores really aren't the most important thing now. But her PCS scores have to rise by a couple to a few points in the next couple of years because she's already behind alot of the non ultra si ladies in pcs.

She is skating early again. Likely to be low balled again.
Vash t's just unfortunate she is skating early what we have to hope for is that a skater one or two spots ahead of her has the skate of a lifetime and gets like a mid-sixties score. Then Nastya comes in and skates better and gets rewarded for it. Let's hope this beautiful skater does not have a PCS scored in the 20s. That would be embarrassing for the sport at the Olympic Games to do that to such a talent. I wonder if Nastya her coach or the Georgian figure skating Federation would say something publicly about her obviously lower than deserved scores all season when she skates well. At Europeans nastya skated a flawless SP but screwed on the score when it was worthy of a small medal. But she skated early and one judge gave her a PCS score after that beautiful short program of 24.80. That judge should never be invited to judge another figure skating competition.

I am sure Nastya will put in the time and the effort to improve her scores deservedly and especially her PCS scores but she will need some help from the judges especially when she skates very well.

Also skating early her maximum score could be about 190 points if she gets only like mid-sixties in her SP. The three American women will be way over 200 points the three Japanese women will be way over 200 points the two or 3 Russian women will be way over 200 points. A couple of the Korean ladies will be over 200 points. I think the best Nastya can do is skating in the second-to-last group for the free which would be the top 12 after the SP.

I also hope she takes some wonderful memories home from this controversial Winter Olympics.

I would also like to see a replay of her beautiful short program in the Olympic team event. I don't know why they don't make the videos more readily available.

If she skates well and is consistent she will get there. I don’t care what the judges give her here. All I want is for her to have a great skate and enjoy her first Olympic.

All the best to the beautiful baby girl Guba. ?

You have the right attitude but it's just been so frustrating over the years to see her low balled when she skates flawlessly..

The good news is she's kind of re-establishing herself this season hopefully she goes to Worlds and then her scores go up next season. It does frustrate me to see her get picked apart and lose points here and there and then that does not happen with the top skaters.

I'll be cheering for her. Hopefully, she can capitalize on the momentum from her short program in the Team Event.
Anastacia is turning her short program into one of the most beautiful in ladies figure skating.
I'm wondering if she'll keep this for next season.
