Bronx apartment building fire

There was a fire in an apartment building the Bronx that killed 12. One of those killed was a soldier home for the holidays who kept running into the building to save people before the smoke finally overwhelmed him. Emmanuel Mensa was only 28 years old. The fire is suspected to have started by a three year old playing with a stove. I just wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone to check the batteries in your smoke detector.

And if you live in an apartment, if a fire occurs, leave the door to the apartment closed when you exit. Fire officials say the family left the door open when they fled and the oxygen in the hallway pushed the flames up the stairwell, blocking and trapping the upstairs occupants.

Even if you don't live in an apartment, if you can shut the door between the fire and other rooms, it can help. My mom did that when my brother (also age 3, like the little one who started this fire) also played with the stove and set our kitchen on fire when I was little. Saved the rest of the house. I'm not sure she actually *knew* to do this - she simply shut the door to keep the smoke in the kitchen while we made our escape. But it worked to slow the fire as well.
