I'm going to pull this name out for his own thread. He was a musical genius who influenced so many, including the Beatles. He was a tortured soul as well.
The Beach Boys tunes were a standard part of my summers growing up and even into adulthood. RIP Brian.

I became more of a fan when they were past their prime, but I had always enjoyed the music. All of the Wilson boys are gone. My plan is to look for my Pet Sounds cd which hasn't been seen since the most recent move, and read the notes cover to cover.

"In My Room" is the best introverted love song to a bedroom. "God Only Knows" is one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard, and that's coming from an unrepentant atheist.

His ear for harmonies was genius, RIP Brian.
Is there a better song to conclude a movie than "God Only Knows" at the end of "Love Actually?"

Might as well add links to some songs because why not. @Cachoo got one of them I mentioned, but here are some of my other favorites:

Brian Wilson truly was a tortured genius. His father was a monster and Brian suffered from mental illness, but managed to write some of the best music of their era. I agree that God Only Knows and In My Room are my two favorites.
Yes, he was indeed a tortured genius. It was sad to read how much he was abused by his father and also his struggles with mental illness and substance abuse. I wasn't a huge fan of the Beach Boys when younger, but I have come to appreciate their music in recent years.

My mom was a huge Beach Boys fans, too, and listened to Beach Boys cassettes throughout my childhood. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of Beach Boys songs. I had memorized the words to Surfin' USA as a toddler.

I always associate the Beach Boys with a later period because of how much my mom listened to them -- plus their longevity. I was alive whey they released Kokomo, and I remember that well (and knew all the words at age 8). I always forget that some of their songs were from the early 1960s, when my mom was a kid.

My favorite Beach Boys skating program was Nicole Bobek's Surfin' USA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkAz0ixldGw. I didn't recall any others until Gilles and Poirier this year. That was also a great program.

I grew up with all the Beach Boy songs, they were one of the "safe, good clean band" parents were ok with listening to them.

Summers baking in the sun slathered with baby oil (yeah I know but it was the 60's), going to the swimming pool Beach Boys blasting on the speakers.

Like @rfisher said Brian was a genius but his father insisted/abused them and force beachy songs, not the music Brian wanted to write.

I saw some of the original members live and they said wonderful things about him. Paul McCartney has said Brian was an influenced on his music.

As the drug abuse brain trauma and his serious mental illness progressed I thought his wife is a very strong woman.

Hope his is having Fun, Fun, Fun with his brain now free.

ETA - BRIAN WAS IN THE 2012 TOUR I SAW!

I watched a docu on another group of brothers who harmonized beautifully (The Bee Gees) and they mentioned The Beach Boys as a constant when they were at the beach in Australia. Their songs will always make me think of surf and sun and driving around aimlessly with your friends during your teenaged years.

We were out at the Santa Monica beach with my then 3 or 4 year-old daughter (so, 1994? 95?) -- pretty much nobody on the beach, morning, but not summer. Kept hearing Beachboys music. Sounded live, coming from the pier. Wandered over there-- it was the Beachboys, apparently getting ready to be part of a Baywatch episode, and this was sound check. We went up on the pier...maybe 20 people around plus crew. Magical.

This is a story that Alice Cooper told about John and Brian.

“I was sitting backstage after the 1974 Grammys with Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist) and John Lennon. This was when Brian was really having some mental issues,” said Cooper.
“During the course of the conversation, I kept seeing Brian out of the corner of my eye, just kind of staring at us from different angles.”
“Finally, he came up to the table, bent down and whispered in my ear ‘Hey Alice, introduce me to John Lennon.’ I couldn’t BELIEVE that these two men had never met! They were virtually neck and neck in the 60’s as the greatest bands on the planet, and I’m SURE they must have crossed paths at some point. But then I thought to myself, ‘Wow, I’m going to be the one to introduce them and become a part of rock history!’”
“So I merely said, ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, this is Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was very cordial and polite, saying things like ‘Hello Brian, I’ve always wanted to meet you. I’ve always admired your work, and Paul and I considered Pet Sounds one of the best albums ever made.’ Brian thanked him and walked away, at which point Lennon went right back to his conversation like nothing had happened.”
“About ten minutes later, Brian came by our table again, leaned down and whispered something to Bernie, and all of a sudden, Bernie was saying ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was just as cordial and polite as the first time, saying essentially the same thing about always wanting to meet him.
As soon as Brian walked away, John looked at both of us and casually said in his typical Liverpudlian accent, ‘I’ve met him hundreds of times. He’s not well, you know.’”
We were impressed by John’s empathy and kindness in dealing with Brian and thankful that Brian has found some mental stability following tumultuous times.

I was 12 years old, living in Boston. when I first heard a Beach Boys song. I immediately fell in love with the image of California all that fabulous, easy-going lifestyle their music implied.
Eventually, I lived there for 21 years & loved every minute of it.
To say goodbye to this Beach Boy makes me so sad but also grateful for the inspiration his music gave me to become a Califorian myself.
