Apple says to stop putting your wet iPhone into rice

Didn’t work for me years ago. The phone slowly came back on its own.

It didn't work. The phone dried out on its own and being in rice was a coincidence.

If you think about it, how is the rice which is on the outside of your phone, going to draw out moisture deep inside your phone? It will absorb water from the atmosphere before it goes into something but not after. That's not how water-absorbing material works.

You wouldn't put a sponge next to a puddle of water but not touching it and expect the water to jump over to the sponge. You wouldn't boil rice by putting it in a double boiler. The water has to touch the thing that is absorbing it and the rice isn't touching any water inside your phone.
 
We kept diapers with moisture wicking layers in the help desk tool kit. If the wetness was from diet soda, black coffee or water, we’d place the device on the diaper, put it in a very dry place, run a fan, and pray. While I didn’t keep track, I think we saved about 2/3 of the things we were called for, but only if we got to them quickly. We didn’t even try if the liquid had sugar or milk.
