A challenge for Olympic athletes flying from the US to China?

This could put a real crimp in athlete travel to the Olympics from the US. (Perhaps from other countries as well, but this article only mentions the bilateral situation.)

"The U.S. Transportation Department issued an order Friday blocking 44 passenger flights by Chinese airlines after the Chinese government took the same step against American carriers as part of its strict coronavirus control policies.

The restrictions begin Jan. 30 and run until March 29. They affect flights between Los Angeles and New York and five Chinese cities.
Since the early days of the pandemic, the Chinese government has imposed a policy known as the “circuit breaker” that imposes limits on inbound flights by airlines if their passengers subsequently test positive for the coronavirus.
...
Airlines that operate a China-bound flight that contains between five and nine passengers who subsequently test positive for the coronavirus are supposed to have two options: suspend that flight for two weeks or limit that flight’s capacity to 40 percent for four weeks. The Chinese government says it applies the rules in the same way to domestic and international airlines.
But the Transportation Department says in the case of the most recent incidents, the U.S. carriers were not given the choice and were told they must cancel the flights, while being denied advance warning.

“U. S. carriers, who are following all relevant Chinese regulations with respect to pre-departure and in-flight protocols, should not be penalized if passengers, post-arrival, later test positive for COVID-19,” the department wrote in Friday’s order."

This is getting a bit crazy.

It does not affect Olympic bound passengers. They either use charter flights or go to Olympic hub airports (Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Paris) to get shuttles.

What about skaters in the 2nd week? Will they delay their arrival?

Maybe, if they’re certain that they won’t be in the TE.

It's a good question. The federations haven't published their team event composition yet.
I suppose it depends on whether or not the skaters want to participate in the Opening Ceremonies.

TE participants don't have to be announced until the day before the SPs. We should know, at the latest, the Men's SP, Pairs SP and Dance RD participants the evening of Feb 2nd here in NA and the Women's SP the evening of Feb 4th. Men's FS participants are announced after the Women's SP on Feb 6th (evening of the 5th in NA), and the rest of the FS/FD participants are declared after the Men's SP.

According to the spokesperson for Skate Canada, the COC has two Air Canada charters that will take all the athletes to Beijing.
My niece works for Own the Podium so 7 planes overall for Olympic athletes and I assume coaches etc etc etc etc. She mentioned it at Christmas and I haven’t seen her since. I know Own the Podium staff are going - the ones that work directly with the coaches - but that could have changed too. My niece said it is a really amazing organization to work with though.

Does that include the Paralympics as well?

Athletes from biathlon, alpine and cross country ski, and all the sliding sports wouldn't even be in the United States at the moment.

For freestyle ski and snowboard, X Games is happening right now in Aspen.

Per this IG story from the Team USA account - team processing is in LA "later this week"

I want to say I saw something on KMT's IG in the last day or two about last-minute, pre-bubble shopping, so I'm guessing that we'll see departures from Canada starting next week also.

Safe travel wishes for ALL of the athletes from all nations!

It seems that the bobsled team is taking rest at Chula Vista Training Center near San Diego before the flight to Beijing.
Well, "rest" is a relative term, lol. They're not competing but they're still working hard and making great use of the facility.

Alexa Knierim said she's leaving on the 27th.
Did she say whether Brandon Frazier is going along, too? ;)
(Just curious if his PCR tests have gone negative, haven't heard anything about his status nor Alysa Liu's)

Hard to believe it's just around the corner!!!! Safe travels to all the Olympics-bound teams!

I found the quote on "two charter flights" by Michael Slipchuk here. It's possible he mentioned only the flights which will be used by Skate Canada. He also says after the competition, skaters and coaches will leave within 48 hours via hub airports, unless invited to the gala.

This article says COC limits number of passengers per flight.
